SIGNIFICANCE: Numerous disputes arose during construction of the building causing delays, as the sewer lines were to be placed in an old miner's placer claims. One of the first structures in Alaska to be constructed entirely of reinforced concrete, the Baranof has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. Franklin Street LOT/BLOCK #: Lot 9 Block 81 Tidelands Addition DESCRIPTION: Flat roof, double-drop woodsiding; ornate slanted and shingled front parapet; multiple ornate cornices under fDQf-l ine; 3/4 turret with wood shi ngl es on southwest corner; second set of curved horizontal woodwork with cornices at centerl ine; doubl e-hung windows; clerestory windows high on 2nd floor; fl at storefront wi ndows on 1st floor with recessed entryway; wood skirting. SIGNIFICANCE: The Alaska Steam Laundry provided an essential service to a large number of miners. The building is on the site of prominent early Juneau business district. Franklin Street LOT/BLOCK #: Lots 1 &2 Block I Juneau Townsite DESCRIPTION: 3-story structure, flat roof, double drop sided wood frame construction with concrete foundation; low-rising front parapet; cornices on overhang below roof-line; double-hung clerestory windows above street canopy; windows; decorative woodwork elaborate, heavy woodwork on and 1st floor; basement. SIGNIFICANCE: .Oldest surviving hotel in continuous operation in Juneau.' Originally named the Al askan, the name was changed to the Northl ander only later to be re-named The Alaskan in 1977. Franklin Street LOT /BLOCK #: Lot 1 Block H Pacific Coast Addition DESCRIPTION: 2-story, wood frame structure, flat roof, vernacular storefront facade with non-ornamental boxed cornice$; apartment unit in rear; sloping lot. SIGNIFICANCE: Original structure was Madsen I s Rooming House, located on the slope above Franklin Street and converted to a hotel in the 1890·s. During the landslide of 1937 the structure was pushed down the hill to its present 1ocati on and subsequently rebuilt. The Frankl in Hotel was owned by John T.
