Alaska Steamship Company Dock Site/People's Wharf<br />

DESCRIPTION: Located on t i del <strong>and</strong>s adjacent to South Frankl in Street; docks<br />

<strong>and</strong> structure; near Juneau Cold Storage.<br />

SIGNIFICANCE: Reportedly built in 1886, Juneau's first dock was constructed<br />

by M.W. Murray <strong>and</strong> Captain James Carroll. This property was donated by<br />

Carroll to the <strong>City</strong> in 1900 who later sold a portion to the Cold Storage<br />

Company who built their structure in 1926. The People's Wharf was established<br />

nearby <strong>and</strong> Alaska Steamship Company docked its vessels until the Union Wharf<br />

was built around 1900, south <strong>of</strong> People's Wharf.<br />
