DESCRIPTION: l-story, flat ro<strong>of</strong>, wood frame construction,.fixed windows,<br />

dropped metal awning. wood piling foundation.<br />

SIGNIFICANCE: Originally a saloon <strong>and</strong> parlor house constructed during the<br />

Klondike Gold Rush. The building is situated in Juneau's old red light<br />

district. <strong>and</strong> Juneau's Downtown <strong>Historic</strong> District. The structure has housed<br />

various saloons since construction.<br />

Northway Building<br />

DATE(S): 1917<br />

LOCATION: 431 S. Franklin Street<br />

LOT /BLOCK #: Lot 13 Block 2 7-A Addition<br />

DESCRIPTION: Flat ro<strong>of</strong>, rectangular. wood frame bUilding with drop wood<br />

siding; low rising front parapet; decorative cornices. double-hung windows;<br />

tongue-<strong>and</strong>-groove siding.<br />

SIGNIFICANCE: One <strong>of</strong> the first buildings to be constructed on the mine<br />

tailings from the AJ mine that formed the extension <strong>of</strong> S. Franklin. It was a<br />

house <strong>of</strong> ill-repute during early days <strong>and</strong> later served as a gambling <strong>and</strong> card<br />

game parlor. The structure was converted to a triplex .in the 1960 ls <strong>and</strong><br />

remodeled into a commercial structure in 1984 by Northway Builders.<br />
