NOTES QUESTIONS
• The proficiency rate for seventh and eighth graders fluctuates
from year to year but is consistently greater than 50 percent.
• In high school, the proficiency rate decreases with each grade
level, however students at grades 9-11 are performing better
than state counterpoints.
• Academy students outperform non-academy students in all
grade levels and subject areas.
MATHEMATICS
• JCS students start strong in math and generally show a decrease
in the number of students meeting the proficiency
target as they progress through the grade levels. During the
last test cycle, ±55% of the students in grades 2-4 scored
proficient or above while only ±41% of the students in
grades 5-7 were rated the same.
• Algebra and Geometry proficiency rates are ±15%.
• On average, JCS students are performing similarly to
students statewide in Algebra I and Geometry.
• The number of students taking standards-aligned courses
and the corresponding end-of-course math tests has increased
significantly (no 06 math test, 137 students to 86
students in 08 – see also Charts 12 and 13 on page 114).

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE)
As displayed in Table 11, CAHSEE Census data show that substantially
more tenth grade students pass the English-language arts
portion of the exit exam than the mathematics section during the
initial test administration.
JCS’s passing rate for seniors on the exit exam (shown in Table 12) is
consistently greater than 90 percent with a higher proportion of
