En route, cross the Wallace Line, a biogeographical boundary that
separates the ecozones of asia and asia/australia. Borneo is home to
a vast tropical rainforest that is one of the planet’s last refuges for wild
orangutans, as well as the distinctive proboscis monkey and pygmy
elephant. Birdlife, including the exotic-looking hornbill, and plant
species, highlighted by the enormous pitcher plant Nepenthes rajah,
are also plentiful and astonishingly diverse, and the underwater reef
systems are among the best in the world. This exciting new program
combines superlative wildlife viewing with visits to ancient traditional
villages, from the headhunters of Malaysian Sabah to the animistic cults
of Sulawesi’s Torajaland. also call in Makassar, an important fishing
center and southern Sulawesi’s primary port.
Observe the fascinating variety of wildlife that Borneo has to offer, including orangutans (cover),
tropical fish and manta rays (above), and the distinctive hornbill (left).
Zarin Machanda
Zarin Machanda, lecturer on human evolutionary
biology, received her Phd from the department of
human Evolutionary Biology at harvard University.
She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on
primate ecology, evolution, and behavior. her research
revolves around understanding the factors that shape the quality and
development of social relationships among primates and specifically
chimpanzees, focusing on male-female relationships, male-male
cooperation, and feeding competition. Most recently she has started a
long-term project to study infant and juvenile chimpanzees and how they
develop sex-typed behaviors like aggression. Zarin has spent the last 15
years working with both captive and wild chimpanzees, including almost
three years living and conducting research in western Uganda.
