SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: 

Parishioners who would like to have their child 

baptized at St. Leo’s are requested to call Father Hahn at the 

Parish Office to personally schedule an appointment to meet 

with him to discuss this great Sacrament. Normally Baptisms 

are held on the first Sunday of each month, after our 11:00 am 

Mass, or approximately at 12:15 pm. At least one sponsor 

must be a practicing Catholic, age 16 or older, Confirmed, and 

must present a sponsor certificate if from another parish. 

Parents must be registered members of St. Leo’s parish. 

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: 

Couples contemplating marriage must contact Fr. 

Peter Hahn, at the Parish office, at least one year before the 

date of the intended marriage. Church date and arrangements 

should precede all other wedding plans. Marriages may be 

scheduled on Saturdays at 11:00 am or 2:00 pm.

“The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” 

(Isaiah 7:14) 

Today, on this Fourth Sunday of Advent, we hear this prophetic proclamation of the birth of our 

Savior in two settings. The first is from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, written probably about 725 years 

before the Birth of Christ. The second is from the First Chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, referenced by the 

Angel in the dream to Saint Joseph. We take this time to reflect upon this most magnificent event, the 

“fulfillment” of what God had promised from the beginning, that He would send His Son to save us from our 

sins, to restore what had been lost in that first, “Original Sin”, to reconcile all humanity to Himself. 

Mary said “yes” to God. She heard the invitation of the angel, Gabriel, and despite the temptations to 

worry and fear, she trusted in God, in that perfect, sinless faith that was hers. Joseph said “yes” to God. 

Despite his reservations when he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, he also heard the invitation of an angel and 

“did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.” 

And so we see the upcoming celebration of Christmas within this context of God’s invitation to them 

and also to us. He still invites us to say “yes” so that we might bring Him to others; His truth, His love, His 

mercy and His peace. Christmas is not only “historical”, although it is indeed that, a true and actual event that 

happened in history. Christmas is “immediate”, an ongoing expression of God in which He invites us to a 

union with Him. Mary held Him in her womb and in her heart. We too are called to allow Him to join 

Himself to us, to unite our hearts and our wills to His. 

As the Shepherds did so long ago, we come to our celebration of the Sacrifice of Holy Mass to adore 

Him, to go to that “stable” where Christ rests, which now is not in that remote town of Bethlehem but in every 

Tabernacle in every Catholic Church. Like the Shepherds, we bow in awe, but not only to gaze upon Him, 

but also to actually receive Him, to be united to Him Who is truly and really present in the incomprehensible 

gift that is the Holy Eucharist. 

We have so much to be thankful for; the countless blessings that are ours. But among them all, the 

greatest gift is the gift of faith that we share as a Parish Family. Father Richards and I have been humbled by 

the countless expressions of your kindness in so many Christmas cards and expressions of generosity. He and 

I both want to express our affection for all as we pray for you each day, as we, together, continue in our 

journey of faith. 

As we look forward to this Wednesday’s celebration of Christmas, let us see how this “reality” of the 

Son of God coming among us is still an ongoing reality. He is risen in glory now, united to His Father in the 

perfect joy of heaven. Yet, as Saint Matthew recounts in our Gospel, quoting from Isaiah, His Name is 

“Emmanuel which means ‘God is with us’”. (Matthew 1:23) Indeed, He is with us now and always. May all 

of us know and feel His presence and His love.

From Our Parish Manager,

Help Needed for Christmas Set-up 

December 23 rd & 26 th 

Join Deacon Gene Vannucci and others in serving the 

parish by assisting with the set-up and tear down of our 

gymnasium as we prepare for Christmas Mass at 

4:15pm on Christmas Eve. Help is needed for set up on 

Monday morning, December 23 rd from 9 am till noon. 

Work will include chair set up, assisting with Sanctuary 

preparation and decoration, hymnal placement, and 

other assorted tasks. In addition, we will need assistance 

for tear down on Thursday, December 26 th from 9 am 

till noon. This will include removal and storage of chairs 

and the stage, as well as packing and transporting all 

liturgical supplies back to the Church. Some cleaning 

may be needed as well. High School and College 

Students are particularly invited, as this is a great way to 

serve your fellow parishioners during school break. Plus, 

these will count as community service or “Good 

Samaritan” hours. Please contact Frank Kuchinski at

attend, so we can know how many to expect. 

Maintenance Notice Update to All Our Parishioners 

and Visitors 

Thanks for your patience over the past few months. The 

replacement of the A/C chiller in the Church continues, 

and should not impact HVAC operation as we are finally 

past excepted use of air conditioning in the Church. 

Also, crack sealing and line striping has been completed 

in our parking lot. Hopefully, this will help to preserve the 

macadam for a few additional years and make it easier 

to see the parking spaces. But, there still are several 

areas of the macadam that need repair. If weather 

cooperates, this will be completed early in December. 

Otherwise, the remaining repairs will be postponed until 

the Spring thaw. 

Thanks again in advance for your patience as we try to 

maintain and improve our campus. If you have any 

questions or concerns, please contact me in the office. 

Food Pantry Collection

Hempfield Area Food Pantry will

Autism Spectrum Disorder 

An Informational Evening will be 

presented by Carolyn T. Bruey, Psy.D., 

BCBA, licensed psychologist, certified 

school psychologist, board certified 

behavior analyst, and published author 

with more than thirty years of experience 

working with children and adults with 

Autism Spectrum Disorders, their families, and provider 

agencies. This evening is hosted by PAWS (Parents 

Active With School). It will be held on January 9 th , 2014 

from 7:00 – 8:00 pm in Rooms 3 and 4 in our Church

New Women At The Well CD 

The Women at the Well have finished 

their latest project "Joyful Surrender". 

This collection of eleven songs 

features soft, comforting and healing 

music in our traditional style, using 

both the individual talents of each 

woman as well as our beautiful 

harmonic blend. You may recognize 

several of the selections, in addition to 

learning some new and lovely 

melodies. "Joyful Surrender" is available to purchase at 

the Rectory or through any of the Women: Mary Ellen 

Genoese, Linda Riva, Mary Loiseau or Helen 

McMonagle. The cost is $12. As always, we donate all 

the profits from our sales to various local, national and 

international charities. Thank you and God bless you for

U8 Coaches and Kids Baseball Clinic 

Tuesday, January 14 th , 6:00-7:30pm 

Any U8 Coach and any child (Boy/ 

Girl), 6-9 yrs. old (generally U8 

players) are invited to attend this 

clinic lead by Christopher Kiehl, 

LCHS Head Coach who lead the 

varsity team to a 20-4 record and 

2013 LL League Championship. It 

will be held at the LANCO field 

house, 1901 Miller Rd, East Petersburg. Coaches will 

learn drills and techniques for teaching kids baseball. 

Kids will learn fundamental mechanics for throwing, 

catching and hitting. The cost is a donation (suggested 

amount $10/person). There will be a limit of 20 kids and

Youth Ministry Events 

YOUTH MINISTRY MEETINGS 

Middle School (6 th , 7 th & 8 th grade) and High School (9 th - 

12 th grade) YM will meet on Monday, January 6 th . If you 

are in middle school – join us in the WAC from 4:30-5:45 

pm. The WAC is open & supervised from 3:30-4:30 pm 

for those who would like to come and hang out. High 

school will meet from 7-8:30 pm. 

SNOW TUBING AT AVALANCHE XPRESS 

All 6 th – 12 th graders are invited to join us for our annual 

bus trip up the “mountain” to Heritage Hills in York, PA. 

Our trip is Friday, January 10 th , and includes a pizza 

dinner. Join us for an evening of fun! Registration forms 

are on the parish website and in the Narthex. 

MARCH FOR LIFE 2014 

All 7 th – 12 th graders are invited to join us on 

Wednesday, January 22 nd , 2014 as we take a coach 

bus to the Youth Rally and Mass for Life at the Verizon 

Center in Washington, D.C. Following this event we will 

go to the Mall and will join the March for Life to the 

Supreme Court. There are a limited number of tickets/ 

seats so register soon. Registration forms are on the 

parish website and in the narthex. 

CATHOLIC HEART WORKCAMP: All 8 th – 12 th graders 

are invited to journey with us on June 7 th – 13 th , 2014, 

as we travel to Philadelphia, PA to serve the poor and 

marginalized in that community. This week long 

adventure leaves a life-long impact on those we serve 

and on those that serve. The cost is $400 and 

fundraising opportunities are available. For more 

information about Catholic Heart Workcamp, see our

How is it to be accomplished? 

The seven part DVD series, “As 

By a New Pentecost”, addresses 

what is needed to fan into flame 

that which is our heritage by 

Baptism and Confirmation so that 

the gifts might come to fullness 

and become powerfully active in 

our everyday lives. 

Beginning on Sunday, January 5 th , and continuing 

until February 16 th , the DVD talks will be presented 

along with prayer, praise and personal testimony by 

those who have experienced life-changing grace that 

enabled them to go beyond what they know because of 

a personal encounter with Christ through the power of 

His Spirit. Miracles do happen today. God does speak to 

His people. If you want more grace, more power in your 

Christian walk, yield to the call to learn more about 

God’s love and provision, having a personal relationship 

with Jesus, and how the power of the Spirit can help you 

to overcome everyday problems and even 

insurmountable difficulties in life so that you can be a 

witness to others about salvation and of the beauty of 

the Christian life. 

As we face the current anti-Christian, secularist culture, 

the gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed at Pentecost need to 

be revived as never before. When Pope John Paul II in 

Redemptoris Missio, 1990, spoke of the universal call to 

holiness and mission, he spoke of a new effort, a new 

ardor, methods, and expression directed in a new way, 

not only to those who have never heard the gospel 

before, but now also to the lukewarm and de- 

Christianized Western nations. The riches of Christ are 

never exhausted, but in many, the gifts of the Spirit are 

dormant because they do not know how to bring them to 

life. The ardor which followed the first Pentecost can be 

experienced by every Christian today, so that we too can 

proclaim with the burning conviction of St Paul, “Woe to 

me if I do not preach the Gospel” (1Cor 9:16). 

As a means of drawing the whole world into union with 

God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit, 

the continuing reality of Pentecost needs a new fervor. 

As we have a genuine encounter with Christ and 

experience a conversion of heart, a knowledge and 

manifestation of the gifts can become active and alive in 

each of us today that instills in us the passion to share 

Christ with others. For you who have experienced this 

already, there is always more.

5 th and prepare to never be the same again. The 

meeting will last approximately 1½ hours and light

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 was carried over 

through 2013, to those who wish to make a charitable 

contribution from their IRA. Donors age 70 1/2 years can 

ask their IRA custodian to make a gift in 2013 to St. Leo 

Parish. The transfer will be a tax-free transfer to the 

public charity and thus equivalent to a 100 percent 

charitable deduction. Please check with your financial 

advisor to see if this is appropriate for you. This tax 

break is expiring in 2014!
