Cheerleading squads = school spirit
With basketball season ending,
I would like to commend
our eighth grade and seventh
grade cheerleading squads for
their great efforts in strengthening
school spirit. They worked
endless hours devising chants,
cheers and dances to encourage
our players to win and fans to
cheer the players on to victory.
The eighth grade squad
members were: Courtney Albert,
Kaitlyn Propst, Kristen
Verina and Tori Wilder. The
seventh grade squad consisted
of: Taylor Baumiller, Morgan
Cratsley, Leann Fabian, Michelle
Frantz and Katie Pelton.
Tryouts were
held for the 2008-
Students At Work
Our middle school students
have been preparing in the classrooms
for the upcoming Achievement
Tests.
Mrs. Foertch’s seventh and
eighth grade reading
classes read a fiction book
and then created a book
cover to go with their story.
Displaying their work are:
Heidi Vantassel, Justin Polk,
Alex Cook, J. C. Boyer,
Corey Maretich and Michael
Chachko.
Mrs.Foertch’s
sixth grade reading classes also read a
fiction book of their choice. They created
a pop-up report which included a summary,
the setting, characters, etc.
Mrs. Bins-Castronovo’s seventh and eighth grade social studies classes were studying the Medieval
Period. They were assigned a project of drawing a castle. Some students took that assignment
another step to create three dimensional castles. Below are examples of a few.
Students At Work
Mrs. Schmidt’s seventh grade science classes began
studying the earthworm in preparation for dissection.
Hey, Sabrina! It’s almost
lunchtime. You can wait.
Mrs. Kirby’s sixth grade social studies
classes recently finished studying about
Southern Europe. As a follow-up activity,
the students created Greek vases
using chalk. These vases included similar
designs used in Greek architecture
and sculpture.
The sixth grade students in Mrs. Kirby’s science classes used computers and coins for an
activity called Genetics with A Smile. The heads and tails sides of a penny were used to
represent dominant and recessive traits. The students used Microsoft Word drawing
tools to create a face based upon the
outcome of the tossing of the coin.
Even though everyone’s face used the
same traits, they all look different.

Power of the Pen
On Saturday, February 2, Badger Middle
School competed in the Power of the Pen tournament
at the district level. The Power of the
Pen competition requires students to respond
to a creative writing prompt with an impromptu
response. This year’s prompts included
a narrative revolving around the main
character being a survivor and describing
something that does not last very long. The
team members did very well at the competition,
which included twelve different schools in
the area. The team members spent six weeks
practicing for this event and spent a Saturday
at Howland Middle School competing. They
showed tremendous commitment to the event
and deserve credit for participating in this
challenging contest. The team members
were: Jessica Yeager, Madeline Emery, Katie
Wilson, Sarah Nagel, , Laura Kelly, and Ashley
Yauger. Brianna Amicucci is missing from
the picture. Laura Kelly and Ashley Yauger
were selected for the regional competition.
