SUMMER VACATION
Vacation Locations
by Sabrina Snell
School is almost out and students
are thinking about summer vacation!
Where are you going? Ever
wonder if you’re going to the same
place as your friends? I do! Surprisingly,
quite a few middle school
students are going to the same
places.
VACATION DESTINATION by Lydia Siekkinen
I went around the school asking teachers
what they were planning on doing for summer vacation.
There are some interesting places you can go to during
the summer. If you don’t know where you are going,
here are some ideas that might help you:
Mrs. Roknick—Washington, D. C., Mrs. Schmidt—
Competitive Carriage Pulling in Maryland & Virginia, Mrs.
Falatic—Outer Banks in North Carolina, Mrs. Himes—
Ocean City, Mr. Mendenhall—Nagshead Beach in North
Carolina, Mrs. Kirby—Disney World, Mr. Capp—Myrtle
Beach or Maryland, Mrs. Small—Jamaica in
the Caribbean and Mr. Kochemba isn’t doing
anything but he would like to go to San
Francisco.
WHERE ARE YOU GOING THIS SUMMER?
by Alix Wilson
I have interviewed 81 BMS students to see
where they are going this summer. 3 aren’t
going anywhere, they are just staying home
for the whole summer. Of the 23 that didn’t
know, they think they will either have a surprise
vacation or they just aren’t sure yet.
There are 10 people that are going to get wet
at a water park. 11 lucky people are going to
an amusement park. Like myself, 13 others
are going to a relative’s house and 16 are going
to a different state. The last five are going
to a different country.
RUNNING by Kelsey Mislai
Adrenaline shoots through my
blood.
Because of the fear of loss.
Continuing at my fast pace.
Dodging runners in my way.
Easy as pie I dash down a hill.
Feeling gravity pull me along.
Gaining speed the farther I go.
Hunting down other runners and
overtaking them.
I cross the line!
NOISES IN THE DARK by
Lydia Siekkinen
Mary turned quickly when she heard a loud noise.
Nothing was there.
Oliver, her black cat, hissed at something, then
ran away.
Petrified, Mary looked around the empty room
and still saw nothing.
Quietly, she shuffled the covers and tried not to
think.
Rustling noises came, then footsteps coming
closer and closer.
Suddenly, she jumped out of bed, flicked on the
light and saw a black figure standing in the front
of her bed.
OUR DOG, ASHLEY by Alley Pykare
When our dog, Ashley, ran away, we didn’t know
where she went. She was gone for so long that I
thought that she had made her way into Pennsylvania.
I asked my dad if it was possible that she could
be that far by now. I only felt worse when he said
that she very well could be. After all, we didn’t live
very far from the state border. My mom was out in
the truck, driving up and down roads, to see if she
could find her. Everyone was sick with worry. I tried
to think positive, that we would find her, but I wasn’t
sure.
Then, one of our neighbors called and said that
they found Ashley buy their wood pile. I thought that
she saw a cat or a squirrel and chased it. We weren’t
mad when she came home. We were all too happy
to ever think of being mad. She ate a lot of food and
drank a lot of water. She did run away again, a few
months later, but we found her playing with some
nearby dogs. After that, she never ran away
again. She’s just down right adventurous, and
I suppose she always will be.
NATURE by Lexi Hutz
Nature is a beautiful thing
Flowers bloom and birds sing
Leaves fall and snow drifts down
Nature has a wonderful sound
The seasons come and the seasons go
People watch as the rivers flow
And when the sun gives off light
Nature is a wonderful sight
ABC POEM
As I walk down the beach, the waves are crashing.
Breeze comes along,
blowing through my hair.
Crabs scatter as I walk
by, but watch out they
might
pinch and bite.
Day turns to night as the temperature plummets.
Every day differs from the next.
For as long as I can remember, life has been good.
God only knows what will happen next.
Once winter is done and over
Spring comes and watches over
Flowers come and rain and such
Nature has a wonderful touch
And after spring, summer comes
Animals, such as the bee are not dumb
As they make honey, their attitudes full of
haste
Nature has a wonderful taste
Fall comes, right after summer
This is, for some, quite a bummer
But many build campfires and put up a tent
Nature has a wonderful scent

BOOK REVIEWS by Bryston Stemock
I’ve just begun reading the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan. So far, I’ve only read the first three
books: The ruins of Gorian, The burning bridge and The icebound land. As far as I know, there are seven
books out, though I don’t know if Flanagan is still writing.
These interesting books take place in the medieval
times, focusing on two of five friends, trying to get apprenticed
to either Scribe school, Diplomat school, Cooking
school or Battle school. Will, the main character, was
rejected by the Battlemaster, Sir Rodney, only to be noticed
by a mysterious figure. He is Halt, a member of the
Ranger Corpse. Rangers work as spies for the country
Araluen. They have extremely sharp senses, can move almost unseen and they’ve mastered the longbow and
knives. Little is known about this mysterious group by the common folk, and they think that they use arcane arts.
As it ends up, Will gets apprenticed to Halt the Ranger. Together, and apart, they must stop the evil forces of
Morgorath, a vengeful exiled baron. I give these books five stars.
Also, I recently finished the series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. It’s a modern day
setting mixed with Greek mythology. If you’ve seen the movie & it’s not even close to the book. I know that
movies are never as good as the books, but this was way off. The books are much better. There are five of them:
The lightning thief, The sea of monsters, The Titans curse, The battle of the labyrinth and The
last Olympian. Plus, Rick Riordan, is coming out with a new series about Egyptian mythology.
The red pyramid comes out May 14, 2010.
The main character, Percy Jackson, is the offspring of Poseidon, the god of the sea. He must
overcome Kronos, the titan of the time and father to all of the Olympians, and his evil plans and
minions. Eventually, everyone has taken sides and the big battle of the Empire State Building begins.
I probably just lost you, so I’ll fill you in. The Empire State Building has a 500th floor - Mt.
Olympus.
Both series are extremely interesting, in my opinion. You can pick up either of them at Borders.
Happy Reading!!!!
BOOK REVIEWS BY Joey Mott
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is about a demigod named Percy Jackson, who is destined to fight in a
war and defeat the Titan Lord, Kronos. I give the book series a 10 out of 10. I recommend this series for
adventurous children. Anyone who is interested in this series, find book one: The lightning thief.
The next series of books is The diary of a wimpy kid series. The series is about Greg, a wimpy kid, and
his hard life. This series consists of six books about Greg’s life. The first book talks about how
Greg started his diary. A current reader gave this book a 10 on a scale of 1-10. If you are interested
in this series, look for the first book, Diary of a wimpy kid.
RACING FOR KIDS by Seth King
Seth King, a fifth grader at BMS, spends his weekends
going in circles and loves every minute of it.
“Racing go-carts on a dirt track really gets me
pumped!” King says. He has a good reason to be
excited. Recently, Naugle Speedway of Aliquippa,
PA., is featuring a New Rookie class. Kids who have
never raced before can try out the sport under safe
conditions. Ed Naugle, owner and operator of the
racetrack, promotes this event so that kids can become
part of a healthy, family related activity and
have fun. The class takes place every Saturday from
May through July. Starting times are at 6:00 p.m.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
By Davis Hunkus
A lot of people like to do outdoor activities. I am one of
those people who love them. I like to ride my dirt bike and
ride my bicycle to the park down the road. My friend and I
love to run and walk long distances. When I was at one of
my friend’s houses, we walked a little over two miles down a
couple of roads. Some might say I’m a robot for how much
I run. Some other people might like to play sports like baseball
or basketball. I’m more of a basketball person. In conclusion,
outdoor activities are good for your health and your
body. So go outside and play something to entertain yourself.
So get up and go play outside in your yard or wherever
you can. Stay healthy and fit by going outside!

SUMMER POEM
By Makayla Manes
The grass is green,
The sky, a clear blue,
The summer is here,
It’s really true!
The days are hotter,
Now school is out!
I’m really glad!
I want to shout!
I’m glad summer is here,
And it’s time to cheer,
But, I do fear,
When the end of summer is near.
I’ll have to go to school,
And it will start getting cool,
Then I can’t swim in the pool!
Summer is too short,
This is my poem,
So now I don’t owe them.
POETRY
FEAR
by Taylor Ziobert
Oh I think I’m going to die.
Pressure is on my side.
Quickly I take cover
Running away from my fears.
Seeing strange things
Trembling in my cover.
Unthankful that I’m probably going to
die.
TUNNELWORK by Aiyedun Uzamere
A light at the end of the tunnel.
Because we’ve come so far.
Celebrate my friends, yes, celebrate.
Do we quit now or keep going.
Even now I am starting to worry.
Forgiven and forgotten, never forget.
Great now I missed it, the chance is gone.
Alas, I work harder and there it is again.
But don’t worry, just move along.
Caring people get rewarded after all.
VIDEO GAME REVIEWS
RED STEEL 2 by Aiyedun Uzamere: A lot of western action games have been made over the years, but few have the same attitude as Red Steel
2. This ninja/western game puts you in the shoes of a last remaining member of the Kusagari clan named Hero. You go through the game trying to
get away from the rival Katakara clan. Your weapons throughout the game are many types of guns and your infamous, legendary sword. The game
seems pretty cool. When it comes out, I will be sure to get it. The graphics are pretty good but nothing to get overexcited about. The music is catchy
and powerful. The controls are okay, if you get used to them.
SPLINTER CELL: CONVICTION by Aiyedun Uzamere: You play the main character, Sam Fisher, a man whose humanity is demolished when he
loses his daughter and gets betrayed by everyone he trusts. He’s teetering on the edge of madness and his thirst for revenge is the only thing that
keeps him going. The game follows Sam as he wrenches answers for those who have wronged him. He is brutal and relentless in his effort. One of
the many appeals in this game is the vivid flashbacks that give you crucial information in the story. The concept of the game is an action/stealth
hybrid with perfect pacing and a great story. The creator put a great deal of effort into the graphics. The sound is a big factor with a great score and
background music. Controls are maneuverable and easy to handle.
BULLY VIDEO GAME by Samantha McFarland: In this game, you control Jimmy Hopkins, a troubled teenage boy who was dropped off at Bullworth
Academy. Everything is wrong at this school - the principal is a wacko, all the cliques fight and the teachers all have their own problems.
Jimmy befriends Gary Smith, the soon-to-be “ruler of the school”. But Gary betrays Jimmy, so Jimmy must prove to Gary and the cliques that he is
the toughest. Join Jimmy as he tries to beat the clique leaders: Earnest, Johnny, Ted, Derby, Russell, Edgar and Gary. Enter a disastrous world of
betrayal, violence and love.

SPRING FASHION TRENDS 2010 by Haley Wilson
Spring is the time to refresh your outfit. It is time to pack up your
sweaters and say hello to shorts and sandals. Here are some tips to
keep up with the fashion world:
♦ White clothing is a trendy spring look. A good choice would
be a simple white shirt-dress.
♦ Pastels should be a second choice when shopping for spring.
The top 10 colors are: Torquoise, Tomato Puree, Fushion
Coral, Violet, Tuscanny, Aurora, Amparo Blue, Pink Champagne,
Dried Herb & Eucalyptus.
♦ Jewelry is an easy way to brighten up an outfit. Look for bangle
bracelets or colorful earrings. It is a cheap way to keep up with
trends.
♦ Mixed prints are all the rage. Cheetah and zebra prints are
found at most clothing stores.
♦ Floral patterns are in style right now. Flowers are blooming
everywhere, including on your clothing.
Simple style is a key when shopping for spring: a
pair of jeans, a simple shirt and a piece of jewelry
here and there to create a trendy style.
ENGLISH FESTIVAL REVIEW by Christian McKnight—This year, the YSU English
Festival had seven books for the 7th - 9th grades. They were: Freedom’s Children,
Block Duck, Shipwreck at the bottom of the world, Stories of children
and war, Peeled, The schwa was here and The London eye mystery. In my
opinion, The schwa was here by Neal Shusterman, was the best book. Anyone
who likes a partially transparent child story would really like this book. Jennifer
Armstrong, author of Shipwreck at the bottom of the world, was present at
the festival. She talked about her award winning book which takes place in
Antarctica. Armstrong discussed how she traveled to Antarctica. While there
she got to experience the harsh conditions of the environment. She said it was
actually quite fun to visit there. There was also a speech done by the Shuttleworth’s
from the book, Freedom’s children. Three of them, Ricky, Patrick and
Fred Jr., were in the book. This book tells the experiences of children and
teens during the Civil Rights Movement. After their speech I went up to them
and asked what it was like to meet Martin Luther King, Jr. in person. They
replied, “He was just a man who was just as important as anyone else”. Then
they pointed to everyone and explained how every single person is just as important
as the next. Overall, the English Festival was a real learning experience.
FAVORITE NBA TEAMS
Taylor Kramar conducted a
survey of teachers and middle
school students to find out who
was everyone’s favorite NBA
team that made it to the playoffs.
Results were:
Cavaliers - 17 votes
Celtics - 14 votes
Bulls - 7 votes
Heat - 5 votes
Lakers - 4 votes
Magic - 2 votes
Spurs - 1 vote
FAVORITE SPORTS FOR SPRING by Sarah Sirockman
What’s your favorite spring sport? For most of our 5th and 6th graders I
asked, it was soccer. My favorite sport personally is basketball which was voted
the second favorite by BMS students. Baseball came in third and softball ended
up fourth. The lowest amount of votes were for volleyball. Volleyball may have
finished last but it is a special sport. It takes the skills of flexibility, endurance,
strength and patience.
Basketball is a very worthwhile sport. It takes hours of practice and blood,
sweat, and tears. Yet, it is very rewarding. Still being a young basketball player,
I haven’t experienced all of the memorable moments. So I interviewed a more
experienced player, Preston Sirochman. I asked him why he chose to play basketball.
He said, “Well, my mom had me try out and play in eighth grade and I
ended up really liking it.” I also asked him what his most memorable moment
was. “When I made six 3 point shots in an eighth grade championship game
against Maplewood. That was the very first time I ever made a 3 point shot in my
life!”, he said. Finally I asked him what was his highest achievement in basketball.
He told me, “Starting varsity when I was only a sophomore.”
All of these sports that I have mentioned take a lot of practice to be good at
them, but as you can tell, it is also very rewarding.
BADGER HOT STOVE BASEBALL 2010 by Jonathan Bodnark
Now that spring is here, the Badger Hot Stove Baseball season has begun. Currently, the records for both
11-12 year old baseball teams are: Badger Braves 1– 0 and the Badger Warriors are 0 - 2. This year, both
teams have plenty of potential and hope to keep a winning season alive. The head managers are Coach Matthew
Nicholls of the Warriors and Coach Chris Mott of the Braves. This years players are:
BRAVES - Garrett Kellogg, Joey Mott, Christian McKnight, Robbie Helmick, Cole Tobin, Marc Kraml,
Dante Centofanti, Jordan Helmuth, Seth Morgan, Joe Sneezy and Frank Matejka. WARRIORS - Jonathan
Bodnark, Kevin Dale, Tyler Czako, Justin Deraway, Jake Wix, Joe Millard, Travis Metz, Brandon Porterfield,
