JOSEPH BADGER BOARD OF EDUCATION 2007
EARLY DISMISSAL DAYS - TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
State requirements mandate on-going professional development activities for
teachers. For instance, this year the State of Ohio is requiring all K-8 teachers to
undergo Child Abuse Identification Training. The Joseph Badger School
District provides all teachers both required training and also training for the
implementation of curriculum content standards. K-12 content standards and
data analysis, analyzing test results, can be quite extensive; therefore, we have
adjusted our school calendar to reflect early release days so teachers can receive
this training. EARLY RELEASE DAYS WILL BE CONDUCTED ACCORDING TO
THE SCHEDULE BELOW. STUDENT DISMISSAL TIMES WILL BE TWO HOURS
EARLIER THAN NORMAL.
September 12, 2007 January 9, 2008
The Joseph Badger Board of Education is a non-partisan, elected body created by
the Ohio General Assembly. There are five Board Members each elected to fouryear
terms that overlap. The Board derives its authority and responsibilities from
state and federal law. The Board President conducts Board Meetings and acts as
spokesperson for the total Board.
Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held on the third Wednesday of
each month in the Media Center at 6:00 p.m. (June/July/August meetings begin at
5:00 p.m.) Special Meetings are scheduled as needed. The time and location of all
Board meetings are announced to the media at least 24 hours in advance.
All Board of Education meetings are open to the public. Individual concerns
should be handled through proper administrative channels, with the Board acting as
a source of appeal beyond the level of the Superintendent. Executive sessions, as
permitted by law, are closed to the public.
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Library/Media Center
The Joseph Badger Local School District is proud to continue The Joseph
recognize and honor those graduates of Badger High School who have either
excelled in athletics or who have made significant athletic contributions to the
school or community. A maximum of five honorees will be inducted annually at
one of the boys basketball games during the season. Etched plaques with
pictures and biographies will be prominently displayed in showcases near the
high school gymnasium. Applications for nomination may be picked up in the
Athletic Director’s office or on our website: www.joseph-badger.k12.oh.us.
FOOD SERVICE
As you are aware, the Joseph Badger cafeteria utilizes a Point of Sale System. All
students will have an account with a pin number which will be entered as the student
“checks out” at the end of the serving line. To ensure our student’s confidentiality
and improved sanitary conditions, money will not be accepted by the cashier.
Students must pre-pay for their meals, anyone owing $10.00 or more will not be
permitted to charge meals. Payments may be made either by mail or placed in one
of the four payment boxes located across from the principals’ offices and in the
cafeteria. Students can check their account balance with the cashier. Parents can call
Carol Johnson at 330-876-2810 or email carol.johnson@neomin.org for account
balances or detailed statements.
Breakfast will be available to all students K-12. Breakfast is important for good
nutrition. Studies have shown that students who eat breakfast do their best
academically, are better behaved and make fewer visits to the nurse. Breakfast
consists of:
Main Entrée – choice of cereal or a hot option
Fruit or Fruit Juice
Milk
There are three lunch serving lines. Celery and carrot sticks are offered daily with
2007-2008 ELEMENTARY STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURE
Dear Elementary Parents:
This note is to inform you of a change in the drop-off and pick-up of students
for 2007-2008 school year. Due to school safety concerns, it has become
apparent that we need to improve these arrival and departure procedures. We
encourage all students to ride the bus whenever possible. However, if you
need to excuse a student before the end of the school day, we will be using a
phone procedure.
• Each morning , you may drop
off a student outside the
elementary office to a waiting
staff member. The staff
member on duty will take care
of signing the student in for
the day.
• For pick-up, you must phone
the school the day of, by
10:00 a.m. to release your
child at day’s end. If you are
picking a student or students up every school day, you may
send in a signed letter to release your student each day. Any
student signed out will be excused after the students are
released to the buses. Once again, a staff member will be on
duty to release the students to you. As we must try to limit
traffic inside the building, no one will be permitted to wait
inside. This will help to alleviate congestion at the end of
each school day and provide a safer exit for all students.
• If there is any need to enter the school building, enter the
elementary office doors and allow one of our secretaries to
assist you.
Winter Weather School – Closing Decisions
Dear Parent and Guardians:
Our district staff understands that our decision to open or close schools in bad
weather has a big effect on families. We also understand that our students are
better served—both academically and socially—by being in school. But
always, our top priority is the safety of our students.
How do we make our decisions?
Typically the decision
process to close school
begins the evening prior
to the days school would
close. Please understand
that we make our
decision based on a
careful analysis of all
relevant factors, such as:
• Information
on road
conditions from transportation staff. We must give careful
consideration to the most dangerous roads in the district. Even if
your street looks clear, travel elsewhere in the district may be
dangerous. Also, we must consider that some high school students
drive to school.
• Amount of snow and ice accumulated.
• Whether precipitation is continuing.
• Building conditions (such as whether we have electricity and heat)
• Parking lot conditions: Administrators talk to custodial staff
members who are responsible for clearing and treating school
sidewalks.
• Temperature and wind chill. Please remember that most of our
students wait outside for the bus.
• Weather predictions. We prefer not making our decision based on
weather predictions, which are not always accurate. But sometimes
this is unavoidable.
• What other school districts are doing. We also share information
with other local districts and check whether they are opening or
closing.
Who makes the decision?
As superintendent of schools, I am responsible for the final decision, based on
the above factors and recommendations from the director of transportation.
How is the public notified?
Tune to your local media outlet for up-to-date information on school closings.
Do not call the school unless it is an emergency.
When is the decision made?
I must make the decision by 5:30 a.m. or earlier so we can notify radio and
TV stations. If I wait longer to announce a closing, some parents will have
already left for work, leaving their children unsupervised.
Will we close school if conditions worsen?
Keep in mind that, even if weather conditions worsen, we cannot reverse our
decision in the morning without endangering students. Once we make the
decision to open the school, many parents rely on that decision and leave for
work. If we then send students right back home, many will return to
unsupervised bus stops and empty houses.
Although our staff does its absolute best in this process, we know that often
no perfect decision exists. If you do not feel as though it is safe for your child
to attend school, use your best judgment on whether he or she should attend.
Also, discourage teenagers from driving in bad conditions and offer them
alternatives if weather conditions worsen.
I hope that this explanation helps everyone understand the process that our
district staff uses to make the best possible decision for all families in our
district.
Yours truly,
Dr. David D. Bair, Superintendent
Nursing services are provided throughout the school day by trained health
care professionals possessing either LPN or RN credentials. Medical forms
have been revised and streamlined for
easier referral. These forms should be
completed in their entirety. Please contact
us if there is a question. Periodically, we
will send home information regarding
upcoming screenings, health programs and
useful websites that may lend support to a
child’s better health. As before, we will be
doing vision and hearing screening in the
fall, vision for grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, & 9
and hearing for grades K, 1, 3, 5, & 9.
Any student new to the district will also receive hearing and vision
screening. Scoliosis screening will be performed in the spring for grades 5
& 7. Also, personal hygiene, and growth and development films will be
shown for grades 4 & 5 in the spring. Attendance is a very important part
of a student's academic performance, but there are times when staying
home is better for the student and classmates. A child should stay home if
any of the following symptoms are present:
• Fever of 100.0 F or higher
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Unexplained skin rash
• Eye(s) that are red, swollen, itchy, burning, or matted
eyelashes
• Head lice or nits (eggs)
If students develop any of these symptoms while at school, parents will be
notified. We do everything we can to make the nurse's office a caring and
comforting place for the students to come when they are sick or injured.
Most of all we will treat them with the professionalism, confidentiality, and
the respect that they deserve!
The multi-purpose building is located behind (west end) the new K-12 Joseph
Badger School, near the track and athletic fields. Ticket booth, concession stand
for fall and spring sports coinciding with restrooms and storage are the major
functions for this structure. Storage of sports and maintenance equipment to
• Children need access to healthful foods and opportunities to be
physically active in order to grow, learn, and thrive
• Good health fosters student attendance and education
• Obesity rates have doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over
the last two decades, and physical inactivity and excessive calorie
intake are the predominant causes of obesity
• Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are responsible for twothirds
of all deaths in the United States, and major risk factors for those
diseases, including unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and
obesity, often are established in childhood
• 33% of high school students do not participate in sufficient vigorous
physical activity and 72% of high school students do not attend daily
physical education classes
Wellness Policy
The Joseph Badger School District is committed to providing school
environments which promote and protect children's health, well-being, and
ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. Therefore,
it is the policy of the Joseph Badger School District that:
The school district will engage students, parents, teachers, food service
professionals, health professionals, and other interested community members
in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing district-wide safety,
nutrition and physical activity policies.
Child nutrition staff will provide students with access to a variety of
affordable, nutritious, and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition
needs of students. The Joseph Badger School will provide clean, safe, and
pleasant settings and adequate time for students to eat.
The Joseph Badger School will participate in the School Breakfast Program
and National School Lunch Program to the maximum extent practicable.
Foods and beverages sold or served during the school breakfast and lunch
hours will meet the nutrition guidelines recommended by the U.S. Dietary
Guidelines for Americans with the objective of promoting student and staff
health to aid in the reduction of obesity.
Schools will provide nutrition education, physical education, and health
education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity.
They will establish linkages between health education and school meal
programs with related community services. Please consider the following:
• Only 2% of children (2 to 19 years) eat a healthy diet consistent with the five
10 Ways to Communicate with Your Child’s Teacher
Joseph Badger School District Phone: 330-876-2800
1. Meet your child’s teachers early in the school year. Don’t wait for a
problem.
2. Ask teachers about their goals, rules, and limits, and how often you
can expect to hear from them.
3. Tell teachers about your child—special interests, likes and dislikes,
strengths and weaknesses, and any major changes in his/her life.
4. Get involved at school. Volunteer in the classroom and for special
events and field trips.
5. Make sure the school knows your schedule and how to reach you.
6. Let teachers know the good things your child says about them.
7. Ask questions when you have concerns and stay informed about
what’s going on at school.
8. When requesting a meeting, state your general topic so the teacher
can prepare.
9. Avoid automatically taking sides, whether the teacher’s or your
child’s. Try to stay objective and state your observations only.
10. Stay calm—never accuse or attack. Share what you would like to see
happen. Be specific and ask for details.
