GMA in Gustavus
By Sarah Jefferson and Brittany Keep
The most exciting thing to
happen in Gustavus this year
(quite possibly any year) happened
on September 17. This
was when ABC’s Good Morning
America Show came via train to
The Lipp’s farm as part of their
Whistle Stop Tour and spent
time interviewing Gustavus
farmers and paying respect to
the hard work and importance of
the job. The tour focused on
rural America, and in exchange
for some time in the country, our
small town got a little publicity
and Brad Paisley.
Brad Paisley played three
songs for the audience: “Waitin’
on a Woman”, “Mud on the
Tires” and “Mr. Policeman.” He
was very friendly towards the
crowd and even tossed out guitar
picks thrilling the audience.
They dove for the picks while
Paisley commented, “This is
called feeding the chickens.”
While John McCain also
made a stop and appeared on the
October 3, 2008
GMA show,
he did not
actually
appear before
the
crowd due
to tight security.
Unfortunately
this was a
slight disappointment
to
some
McCain
supporters in
the audience.
People
spent 2-5
hours in line in the pouring rain
from hurricane Ike the previous
Saturday waiting for tickets. The
day of the show spectators spent
another six and a half hours
waiting for buses, standing in
barns, and walking about a mile
and a half before finally hearing
Brad Paisley perform. During
the walk, the GMA team and
Brad Paisley were up at the front
of the line doing the show.
Many people towards the end of
the massive procession had no
idea the celebrities were up front
or why movement of the line
kept stopping and starting. Of
course it was all a worthwhile
part of this once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
44 Year Tradition Continues
By Kim Warner and Liz McKnight
The Hartford Apple Festival
has been around for 44 years.
The main event each year is the
Queen’s Pageant. The first
Queen of the Apple Festival was
Connie Fabick States in 1964.
This year Sarah Smith was
crowned queen by Katy Dvorak,
2007’s Queen. Meghan Gallatin
received 1 st runner up, Jacqueline
Smith was awarded Miss
Modeling, Lindsey Hartt won
Miss Photogenic, and Sarah
Smith was also chosen Miss
Congeniality.
Along with the queen’s contest
the festival hosted quite a
lengthy parade. People were
lined up in their yards and gathered
at Hartford Center to watch
the parade and catch the candy.
“There were more people than I
thought there would be. I ran out
of candy before I got to the center,
and I had seven bags. I felt
so bad,” commented Miss Photogenic.
Some other festivities at the
festival included the apple peeling
contest, pie eating contest,
bicycle parade, queen’s dance,
and the pancake breakfast.

Seniors Look to Badger’s Future
Katie Mathews and Ashley Best
Last November, Badger
Schools had a renewal levy on
the ballot. When it failed to
pass, a group of students
formed a committee to ensure
that it would pass on the second
try on the ballot in the spring.
These students included Brian
Logan, Marcus Heath, Taylor
Phillips, Kate Miller and Katie
Mathews, all of whom are seniors
this year and preparing to
campaign for another renewal
levy on the ballot in the fall.
Levies are the school’s way of
gaining funds for things such as
maintenance, daily operations
and textbooks, to name a few.
“We were surprised when
out campaigning how many
community members did not
realize that this was just a renewal
levy, with no new tax,”
said committee member Taylor
Phillips. “That was when we
realized we needed to get information
to the community,”
added Katelyn Miller, the committee’s
treasurer.
The Levy Committee is
responsible for campaigning for
the levy. Last year, their duties
included helping voters get
registered, informing the community
and school organizations
about the levy, and passing out
signs in support of the school.
The committee has already begun
preparing for this year’s
levy, on the ballot November 4 th .
Veronika is visiting
from the Czech Republic.
Person to Person
By Tawnee Isner
I had a chance to sit down
with Veronika Mourkouva, our
exchange student from the
Czech Republic, and learned
about the differences between
America and Europe and our
school versus hers.
One of my first questions
was why she wanted to be an
exchange student. She answered
that she wanted to know
how Americans live. “Europe is
different form America.” She
went on to explain that we are
more open and friendly than
people in the Czech Republic.
She was very surprised when so
many people just approached
her and introduced themselves.
She said that doesn’t happen
very often where she’s from.
I also found out that, although
she lives in the capital
city of Prague, her school isn’t
really all that big. In fact she
said it was an ugly old building,
but they were allowed outside
on the campus during the hour
long lunch break.
Veronika was surprised at
how rural our area was and how
far people live from one another
here. She said that in Prague
after school, she and her friends
could walk around the city and
find different things to do.
However, in Kinsman she goes
right home after school.
Thanks to Veronika, I was
able to learn more about her
and the Czech Republic.
Maybe she will be able to teach
us all a thing or two.
“It was the
longest forty
minutes of my
life,”
Win, Lose, or Draw
By Shawna McNeely and Cara Prior
“Try not, do or do not, there
is no try,” Yoda. Badger Braves
Varsity girls soccer team starts
out every game with the same
quote. Even though not every
game ends the way they intend,
the next game, they’re out there
ready to play with a new head
on their shoulders.
The biggest accomplishment
for our girls, hands down, was
beating Maplewood 2-1. This is
the first time in five years that
our girls have come out on top.
They ended the first half with a
2-1 lead, fortunately holding
them off until the end of the
game. “It was the longest forty
minutes of my life,” said midfielder
Adrianna Braho. Taylor
Philips had this to say, “It was
nerve wracking up until the last
ten seconds of the second half.”
To get a different point of
view of the soccer team, Jabberwocky
interviewed first year
coach, Michelle Fitch. Fresh
out of college she was “not
wanting a perfect season, just to
see a team with passion and
wanting to play hard.” We
asked her what her thoughts
were about the upcoming Maplewood
game. She summed it
up in three simple words “hard
core win.”
Even though the lady braves
may not be finishing the season
with the record they wanted,
they have one incredibly
memorable win under their belt.
For them, that’s enough!

Limelight on the Green
By Elli Matejka
Our very own Badger Golf
team just completed the 2008
season on Wednesday, September
23. Coached by Mr.
Cappuzzello, they finished this
season with a record of 7-7 ( 7-
5 in the NAC.) Golf, not being
one of the highest profile
sports, some of the players
agreed to an exclusive interview
with Jabberwocky to
shed some light on the subject.
In short, we find a strong team
with a great history and a lot of
confidence.
Jabberwocky: What do you
think people should know
about our golf team?
Marcus Heath: Although this
season was not our greatest, I
think the community should
know that out of the past six
years, the Badger golf team
has won the conference title
four times, almost making a
state birth, twice. We have at
least three people on the allleague
team every year. (pause)
You know, we’ve been historically
good and I don’t think
many people know that. Even
though this wasn’t a conference
winning year, we still had fun
and improved. And, basically,
we are the greatest golf team in
the history of the world.
(laughs)
Brian Logan: Golf is very
frustrating. It’s pretty hard. Uh,
I get frustrated a lot playing so,
I would assume that other players
do as well. It’s a lot harder
than most people think. It’s not
just hitting a ball and going and
getting it. You know, it’s very
mental. But, we’re pretty good.
We hit the ball hard. (laughs)
So, that’s good. And, we’re the
best in the world. (laughs)
That’s the truth.
Jabberwocky: So, what
makes you guys so good?
MH: Practicing at Bronzwood
everyday, for free, thanks to
the great people who own
Bronzwood. They let us come
in there and practice whenever
we want. And, I don’t know.
We’re just really good, I guess.
(laughs)
Russ Armstrong: (jokingly)
Because I’m on the team.
(laughs)
Jabberwocky: What made you
decide to join the golf team?
RA: Because I love it. (laughs)
I really like golf because it’s a
nice, relaxed game. We have a
lot of fun and usually a great
season.
BL: Why? Because it’s fun.
I’m playing soccer and golf so,
it’s pretty hard but, worth it.
MH: I’ve golfed my entire life
and it’s just a really relaxing
sport. It gives me a break from
my high-stress other sports and
it’s just a fun time. I enjoy it.
Attitude is everything
By Cassidy Strickler
The Badger volleyball team
has had a difficult season, winning
a total of three games.
However their fighting spirit
shines through.
The Braves consist of seniors,
Wyllow Sloan, Megan Baird;
juniors, Megan Brainard, Kasey
Elser, Morgan Houser; sophomores,
Amanda DelGarbino,
Ali Governor, Alecia Hughes,
Hannah Morris; and freshmen,
Denise Euker, Kellie Stillings,
Kristen Verina, and Kaitlyn
Propst.
The Braves have shown tremendous
confidence, and determination.
They constantly encourage
one another and cheer
for their fellow teammates.
The Braves played against
the Bloomfield Cardinals September
25 th . Even though the
Cardinals dominated the
Braves, they never lost their
spirit to move forward in their
performance. Bloomfield won
with a total of 3 matches to 1.
“They try their best, they
work hard. Sometimes it
doesn’t go their way, but they
try their best”, stated varsity
coach Amber Mariani.
The team has focused on
building basic skills and learning
to work together on the
court. Since the team has had
the opportunity to play with the
same members for a number of
years, they have developed trust
and dedication among oneanther.
Hannah Morris commented,
“We’ll have more experience
from our past years.
Our players will have better
strategies.” Alecia Hughes
added, “I think we’ve improved
a lot from last year to this year.
We work harder and work better
as a team. We’ve been a lot
better this year because we
believe in one another and
boost each other’s confidence.”
The season’s not over yet
and with attitudes like these,
this team has a lot of potential.
Would race or gender
influence your vote?
Do Race and Gender Matter?
By Shawna Stevens and Zacch Marshal
Jabberwocky asked fifty-three Badger High School students if the race or gender of a candidate would
influence their votes. Twenty -five percent agreed that those factors would influence them. Cory
Mansour replied, “Yes, it would influence my vote because I wouldn’t want a woman as a leader.”
Ashlee Best on the other hand responded, “In America, we don’t discriminate. Our government is responsible
for equality, and it is up to us, as citizens, to put it into full equal effect.”
Badger’s Best
Student of the Month is chosen by Badger High School’s faculty. This is a chance for students who put
forth an extra effort and stand out among the rest of the student body to be rewarded for their hard
work. Upon being chosen, the students receive a plaque and join the Kinsman Rotary Club for breakfast
at the Times Square Restaurant in Kinsman.
Marcus Heath, a senior, has been chosen as
one of Badger High School’s Students of the
Month for September. “I work hard and try my
best. I think I’m a good candidate for this
honor,” says Marcus.
Marcus is the son of Derek and Janelle
Fumerola. After graduation he plans on attending
the University of Cincinnati as a baseball player
and would like to major in business. When asked
what he thought about the school year so far,
Marcus answered, “It’s fantastic and I hope it
goes by quickly.”
Other than obligating time to his schoolwork,
Marcus participates in a variety of extracurricular
activities. He is an active member of
Beta Club, French Club, Senior Committee, and
is the President of the Senior Class. He is also a
member of the soccer, golf, basketball, track, and
baseball teams. When he is not honing his athletic
skills for school, he enjoys playing ping
pong.
What do some of the teachers think about
the outcome? “Marcus is a good choice for Student
of the Month,” said Mr. Rich Bellas.
“Marcus deserves it. He’s a model student,”
replied Mrs. Holly Ceci.
Katie Mathews, a senior, has also been
chosen for the Student of the Month for September.
Katie reflects on her experience, “It’s pretty
cool and I’m pretty excited about it. I really liked
the breakfast. I had delicious blueberry pancakes!”
Katie is the daughter of Jeffrey and Bonnie
Mathews. After graduation she plans on attending
Kent (Main) and has considered studying fashion
design. “[This year is] going by pretty fast. I’m
excited for it to be over but at the same time I’m
kind of nervous for the end of High School,”
Katie stated about her senior year.
When Katie is not working on her studies,
she is involved in NHS, Beta Club, French Club,
and last year she was a member of Junior Prom
Committee. Outside of school she has an array of
hobbies. She enjoys reading, sewing, and scrapbooking.
She is a member of 4-H Clubs, in which
she sews and takes cattle. She is also a summer
counselor at Camp Whitewood.
So what do the teachers think of Katie
receiving this honor? “Katie was an excellent
choice,” says Miss Carrie Albert. “Katie is very
deserving of it,” said Mrs. Amy Jo Middleton
