Healthcare
Flooring solutions in the healthcare sector must respond to numerous
demands. Health and hygiene are a clear priority but they must
also provide a range of technical features as well as create a suitable
environment where patients can heal and staff can work in comfort and
ease. The Healthcare community calls this Evidence Based Design. We
call it Balanced Choice.
Hines VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois
Continual Improvements in Design and
Commitment to Health
The award winning Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital, located 12 miles outside of Chicago, Illinois, opened its
doors in 1921 and currently serves veterans, including those returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. In order to
serve the increasing physical and emotional needs of patients, the 147-acre campus has been undergoing design and
structural renovations in the last several years, with over 170 ongoing construction projects throughout the various
facilities. The first phase of the renovation using products from Johnsonite was completed in 2006, but improvements
continue to be made in various areas of the complex.
Sustainable Goals
While the designers were not aiming for LEED certification for the
hospital, sustainability was at the forefront of product specification
to meet the increased hygienic and environmental needs of
a healthcare facility. The designers made the choice to recognize
the people-friendly standards of FloorScore® certified products, as
well as products which require minimal maintenance with consistent
performance. In choosing various Johnsonite solutions such
as I.D. Premier wood planks, Optima, Prima Olio, Mesto, Cityscape
and more, for various large-scale applications, the designers were
able to achieve all their flooring goals.
Overcoming Challenges
Among the challenges in designing and constructing a healthcare
facility, it was important for the Hines VA Hospital designers
to minimize disruption in the facility and expedite installation.
The scale of the project was so large that, initially, there wasn’t
enough inventory in the local Chicago area. But they worked
closely with the installers to get the product delivered in a timely
and cooperative manner. The flooring contractor, who has worked
with Johnsonite products in the past and was confident they
would work to provide a solution, was able to complete the job on
time and with minimal product waste.
HINES VA HOSPITAL IN HINES, ILLINOIS
Creative Dining
The hospital’s main cafeteria, the Canteen, was designed to capture
the spirit of America, and is decorated with murals depicting
various geographic and cultural areas including the Midwest,
mountain ranges and various farming areas. To complement the
artwork, the designers wanted a high-functioning but neutrally
colored tile that would require minimum upkeep. To meet their
color, performance and maintenance goals, over 4,500 feet of
Johnsonite’s Optima tile in shades of brown and dark brown were
installed in this area of the hospital.
Medical Spectrum Twente in Enschede, Netherlands
Setting New Hospital Trends
The Medical Spectrum Twente is one of the biggest non-academic hospitals in
the Netherlands. The new Woman and Child Center was built to enable women
and children to receive all their care in one location. The building is quite
spectacular, in the shape of a cookie jar, and has a very modern and stylish
approach. It sits very well in its surroundings and is expected to set the style
for the rest of the hospital building project.
12

MEDICAL SPECTRUM TWENTE IN ENSCHEDE, NETHERLANDS
Flooring with bright colors
The overall design objective was to create a non-hospital atmosphere,
to make children feel relaxed and positive. For the flooring,
this demanded bright, inviting colors, and a special, custom
blue shade was chosen as the base. This color, in combination
with open surroundings and purposeful details, has made the center
a place that creates joy and confidence in its visitors.
Successful cooperation
This project was based on a business relationship that goes back
many years. The client was very pleased with the level of service
and support provided and appreciated the room for flexibility.
This, along with the sustainability of the Granit, made a foundation
for collaboration on the project.
High demands for hygiene
As in all types of healthcare facilities, there is an obvious strong
demand for materials and solutions that support infection control.
Granit has unique cleaning and maintenance properties because
its cleaning surface can be fully restored by simple dry buffing.
Thanks to this and their extreme durability, iQ constructed products
have the market’s best life cycle cost.
Central DuPage Hospital
in Winfield, Illinois
Timeless Design
Open since 1964, Central DuPage Hospital offers
comprehensive medical and surgical services to
communities in Chicago’s western suburbs. The
hospital is part of an interdependent network
of healthcare organizations and services, including
convenient care centers, occupational health
services, home health and hospice care. Central
DuPage Hospital (CDH) is committed to its goal
of promoting the health and well-being of the
community it serves.
14

CENTRAL DUPAGE HOSPITAL IN WINFIELD, ILLINOIS
A multi-year renovation and expansion project is scheduled for
the hospital that will redefine the look and feel of the campus
and create a more efficient facility for patients, visitors and staff.
Recently, a new Pediatric Short Stay (PSS) unit was built. PSS is
intended for children requiring less than 24 hours of inpatient
medical care; it contains seven private suites, each including a
bathroom, sleeping accommodations for parents, plasma televisions
and DVD players.
“We were able to create a design that uses color, light and shape
to define a youthful environment rather than typical theme-like
spaces,” said Margi Kaminski, interior designer for RTKL. “Each
sweeping design element leads into the next, creating an experience
that is uplifting for young patients during their brief stay at
the hospital.”
Other details of the new design include a fiber optic “star-lit”
ceiling that greets new visitors, a wave of “bubble” glass tile that
leads down the corridor and a curved glass wall that invites the
on-looker to peer inside a play room. The design is punctuated by
bold use of color and circular shapes on soffits, walls and floors.
“The design is timeless, not gender or age specific and combines
cutting-edge design with excellence in pediatric care for this
specialty unit,” adds Kaminski.
When the Pediatric Short Stay unit at Central DuPage Hospital was
constructed during the fall of 2009, the hospital wanted to provide
a cheerful and inviting environment without appearing too
juvenile since its patients’ ages range from newborn to eighteen
years.
Azrock’s Cortina Grande commercial resilient tile offered the
flexibility to create interesting designs and a wide range of color
options to provide the desired aesthetics. Plus, its reduced maintenance
qualities and the superior performance warranty met the
facility’s needs within budget.
About the Partnership with RTKL – Chicago
RTKL’s Chicago office continues to be pleased with the look and
performance of the Cortina Grande tile. The product’s design flexibility,
color range and reduced maintenance qualities provide
the right flooring solution for CDH. In fact, RTKL, Azrock and Mr.
David’s Flooring International recently received Starnet’s Grand
Prize Crystal Award 2010 for best overall design.
Starnet Design Awards evaluate creative use of floor coverings,
flooring design concepts and how well designs meet client objectives
and special challenges. Each year the Starnet Design Awards
recognize its members who achieve outstanding commercial interiors
featuring innovative flooring products and technologies.
Alliance Community
Hospital in Alliance, Ohio
A Safe,
Environment
Alliance Community Hospital is a
non-profit hospital founded in 1901.
It is licensed for 204 beds, including
78 nursing home and transitional
care beds housed in their attached,
long-term care facility, Community
Care Center.
The hospital found it a difficult task of balancing a healing environment and a healthcare
organization. For their renovation they were searching for a flooring solution that was
easy to clean, sustainable, aesthetically pleasing and would increase their return on investment.
With Johnsonite’s iQ products, Alliance Community Hospital found the solution
they were looking for.
Johnsonite’s Optima and Granit products are no wax, no finish for life and allow the hospital
to clean their floors in minimal time with only a mop and neutral pH cleaner, thus
reducing downtime and disruption in this busy environment. Calm and soothing colors
were selected for their high-performance floors, creating positive vibrations. The balance
of performance and aesthetics has provided Alliance a floor that meets their stringent
requirements on comfort, while creating measurable economic return.
“Coming from a background where I was a
sales representative for a chemical cleaning
company I did not have much faith in
a floor that never had to be waxed,” said
Bob Madison, Environmental Services Co-
Director at Alliance Community Hospital.
“We have a common gathering area in our
nursing home where wheel chairs and constant
foot traffic were a concern of mine.
However, I have witnessed the positive
performance of this floor. I am now a true
believer in Johnsonite’s iQ products.”
Longevity, Durability and Ease of Maintenance
Abrazo Healthcare is committed to providing outstanding accessible healthcare to its communities. Each of Abrazo’s
specialized facilities offers a broad range of services designed to provide greater healthcare access for its patients.
While in the past, each of Abrazo’s facilities housed their own specialized departments; they decided to centralize their support functions
by building a corporate headquarters, which opened in 2006. They were searching for the right products for this new facility to
serve as a balance between first costs and the long-term look and maintenance of the facility.
Foch Hospital in Suresnes, France
The Comforts of Home to Overcome
Anxiety and Pain
In partnership with the Grégory Lemarchal Foundation, the redesigning of the respiratory medicine/cystic fibrosis unit
in the Suresnes Hospital was planned and carried out in 2008. “In addition to the skills of each individual, it was the
determination and willingness of all involved that helped us succeed in our challenge, one that was so close to Grégory’s
heart. On the one hand, we wanted to make this unit a showcase unit, but we also wanted to personalize the space
to create a sense of comfort and reassurance, like what you’d find in your own home.”
26

FOCH HOSPITAL IN SURESNES, FRANCE
Successful face lift
The main building of Foch hospital, set into the slope of the Mont
Valérien, is T-shaped and rises over 10 levels. Located in the
south wing of the fourth floor, the cystic fibrosis unit has undergone
a successful face lift. Choosing Acczent Heterogeneous
Sheet helped to meet the quality-driven requirements of patients
and families.
When you have to spend up to a year in the hospital, the biggest
imperative is to feel welcome. Large red poppies brighten up the
walls, two-tone doors open onto rooms with soft lighting and
unobstructed views of the Eiffel Tower.
Peaceful and familiar atmosphere
The new interior layout at Foch was part-financed by the Grégory
Lemarchal and Vaincre la mucoviscidose (Beat cystic fibrosis)
Foundations, to the tune of almost $660,000.
“Patient stays are frequent and long, so it was important to recreate
an atmosphere that was both peaceful and familiar, one that
would allow patients to feel “at home”,” states Françoise Vidal,
managing nurse in the respiratory medicine unit.
27

FOCH HOSPITAL IN SURESNES, FRANCE
For Olivier Douceur, managing nurse at Foch, who participated in
the redesigning of the unit consisting of 24 specialized beds for
cystic fibrosis and lung transplants, “the choice of material and
color was very important for patients’ morale”. “We followed the
advice of an interior designer and also Anne Ewald, an art therapist
who has a lot of experience working closely with patients.”
A home away from home
The bright walls decorated with posters and splashes of color
bring a sense of freshness and airiness to the whole look, while
the parquet-look on the floor adds to the “reassuring and intimate
ambiance”. A synergy of sensations which creates the impression
of a home away from home.
“We wanted to offer patients everything that Grégory had missed
out on during that whole period,” explains Laurence Lemarchal,
Grégory’s mother. “We wanted to offer all patients the option of
a comfortable living environment where they would not feel like
they were in a hospital,” continues his mother, who is deeply
involved in the activities of the Foundation. The Foundation itself
has monitored the project from beginning to end.
“It’s all geared toward making the time spent at the hospital pass
more quickly,” adds Laurence Lemarchal. Some patients remain in
the unit for almost a year, for example, before and after a lung
transplant procedure.
The wood effect
Finally, the corridor, rooms, lounge and recreational area were
decorated with care by a professional interior designer, who offered
her services free of charge. “We wanted to create a little warmth.
We’re not talking luxury here and it doesn’t cost any extra,” Laurence
Lemarchal states. The medium oak brushed color was chosen
for its realistic, modern effect.
“A worn parquet floor has been shown to provide a feeling of
warmth which is lacking in a place like this. The specific, homey
charm of the wood effect immediately creates a sense of intimacy
and brings a feeling of “family” to the unit. And what’s interesting
is that we get more enjoyment from walking on a vinyl floor than
we did on tiles. Everything is more peaceful and serene”.
Each bed is now also equipped with a touch screen that offers patients
a variety of different multimedia services, including television,
radio, internet, webcam, video games, hospital services, etc.
Regionaal Ziekenhuis Jan Yperman in Ypres, Belgium
Top Quality All the Way
Jan Yperman Hospital is in the city of Ieper (Ypres) in the western countryside, and is one of Belgium’s busiest, most
capable and most respected healthcare facilities. The hospital is the result of the merger of three regional hospitals,
and cares for over 30,000 patients a year with more than 1,000 employees and 550 beds across three sites. Its brand
new, state-of-the-art building was opened in November 2007.
Demand for high-quality products
The new facilities at Jan Yperman Hospital have a very high standard. This modern hospital has the latest technical equipment and all
materials installed are high-quality products. Extensive demands were imposed on the flooring in terms of easy maintenance, comfort,
aesthetics and budget. The iQ constructed products met all the requirements, and were used almost exclusively throughout the facility.
iQ constructed flooring provides unique maintenance properties and the market’s best life-cycle cost.
30

REGIONAAL ZIEKENHUIS JAN UPERMAN IN YPRES, BELGIUM
Special applications
In surgery rooms, intensive care units and neonatology, conductive
Toro SC was used. It provides the highest level of conductivity,
ensuring a high level of safety for both people and equipment. In
wet rooms and similar areas, Granit Multisafe was used because it
offers better safety underfoot. The flooring’s construction provides
a good grip for feet even when the floor is slippery with soap and
water. The dense, impermeable surface and the well-rounded studs
means Granit Multisafe is hygienic and easy to clean.
Focus on hygiene performance
Hospital director Eric Luyckx says that this flooring was a logical
choice. “The performance is simply excellent. Hygiene is a critical
issue for any hospital. We chose the Granit and Toro floorings because
they offer easy maintenance and proven savings on cleaning
costs.”
Design adventures in pediatrics
The whole facility was designed for great aesthetic comfort, and
the pediatric areas gave room for playful creativity on the theme
of “Travelling around the world”. The walls are covered with illustrations
of palm trees, the sea, houses and exotic animals, while
the flooring displays a railway line in bold red and white and a
bicycle lane in red with bicycle silhouettes in white.
Great satisfaction
The results of the flooring installations have brought immense
satisfaction to both patients and staff, in particular the maintenance
staff.
Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, UK
All the Fun of the Fair in the Children’s Ward
As part of a recent refurbishment at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, over 26,900 sq. ft. of Granit flooring was
installed. Granit was fitted in bedrooms, x-ray department corridors and suites. For the children’s ward, a wide range of
images were created, including carousels, rockets and trains. These help to brighten the whole area and provide a fun,
colorful environment for the young patients.
Cost savings on maintenance
Hugh McDougall, Estates Projects Manager at the RAH, commented:
“Having used this flooring in the hospital for many years
we had no hesitation in choosing it again for this refurbishment.
It offers valuable maintenance cost savings and the end result is
aesthetically pleasing, particularly in the children’s ward.” Granit
is one of the best flooring solutions on the market in terms of performance
and economy. As a homogeneous vinyl, Granit is made
from high quality raw materials, guaranteeing no wax or polish for
life. Offering significant cost-savings in maintenance regimes, it
also helps to preserve the environment by reducing the amount of
energy, water and chemicals consumed in cleaning.
Extensive color range
With an extensive color range, Granit offers a wide selection of
subdued shades to give a strong character and contemporary feel.
For the prep areas and shower rooms it was necessary to select a
product with enhanced slip resistance, so Safe-T Sheet was specified.
This features a coefficient of friction of 0.7 or greater rating
with a flexibility that allows for easier coving and vertical installation.
Safe-T Sheet is available in 10 colors, which are designed to complement
other homogeneous vinyls, including Granit. The Safe-T
sheet clean surface treatment provides a durable and easy to clean
finish, also offering long-term savings in maintenance costs.
AULTMAN HOSPITAL IN CANTON, OHIO
The slip-resistant properties of Johnsonite’s resilient flooring, made it a
perfect choice for the hospital, while also creating an aesthetic environment
that was calming, soothing and inviting. Taking advantage of
Johnsonite’s generous collection of healing colors, Aultman was able to
coordinate flooring, treads and wall base throughout the entire facility,
from Emergency and Trauma Rooms, the NeoNatal and Cardiac Care Centers
to the Hallways, Nurse’s Stations and Heliopad entrance.
“I am a true supporter of Johnsonite’s resilient flooring options,” said
Ed Friedel, Vice President of Engineering Services at Aultman. “I did try
a competitive product in a mock-up room for testing purposes. In the
Providing Comfort and
Easy Maintenance
The Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center is part of
Senior Community Centers, a non-profit organization in
San Diego whose mission is to: “End Senior Hunger and
Poverty Through Innovative Solutions.” The impact of the
Wellness Center is keeping seniors healthy and independent
by providing meals, case management, healthcare,
mental health care, exercise, life-long learning that
includes a cyber café, and a robust civic engagement
program.
As a day use facility, the flooring needed to be durable and easily
maintained, yet also provide aesthetic attributes for the staff and
seniors using the facility. The designers at Smith Consulting Architects
turned to Johnsonite’s Optima 24” tiles for a solution.
“The Optima tiles allowed us to use vibrant colors to provide way
finding and room designation throughout the facility,” said Erica
Hutchinson Roman, Interior Designer at Smith Consulting Architects.
“It also provided a comfort level that it would stand up to
high foot and wheelchair traffic. Easily cleaned and maintained,
with no waxing required, was also a big selling point for selecting
Optima for this facility.”
Anglicare Grandview Court in Adelaide,
Australia
One-Stop Flooring
Service for Anglicare
Grandview Court is the newest of Anglicare’s aged care
centers, housing 120 residents in four wings. The center
offers both low and high care, therapy services and special
areas for people with dementia who require memory support.
There are also 24 assisted living units being built
on site, where people can live independently. Grandview
Court has magnificent views of the surrounding hills and
southern vales, out to the sea and is situated in a quiet
residential area. Appointments and fittings in the center
are first-class.
Focus on easy maintenance
During the specification phase of Grandview Court nursing home,
one of the most important attributes Anglicare was looking for in a
flooring supplier was a “one-stop” service for all flooring needs.
That’s where we came in. Anglicare needed to contact only one
partner for all flooring issues. Another important aspect was that
Anglicare wanted to minimize floor care and maintenance once the
facility was in service. Anglicare found that our flooring offered
unique cleaning and maintenance benefits. We also joined forces
with a local Kärcher representative to provide all training needed
for the maintenance staff.
Creating home-like environments
The design process was based on the aim of minimizing the
facility’s institutional look and feel. Acczent Wood was used in
bedrooms and dining rooms to achieve a warm and natural atmosphere
that, as much as possible, gives the feeling of a residential
home. The whole facility was designed to offer a welcoming, clean
environment with an attractive and comforting design setting.
Minimizing maintenance
The building project was carried out in two steps: first a completely
new building, and second the extension and refurbishment of
the existing facility. We were chosen as the main supplier because
of our ability to provide a “one-stop” service for all flooring needs.
Choosing us meant Anglicare needed to contact only one partner
wanted to minimize floor care and maintenance once the facility
offered unique cleaning and maintenance benefits.
Design that creates comfort
The design process was based on the aim of creating homey environments
for all residents and minimizing the facility’s institutional
look and feel. Acczent Wood was used in bedrooms and dining
rooms to achieve a warm and natural atmosphere that as much as
possible gives the feeling of a residential home. The whole facility
was designed to offer a welcoming, clean environment with an
attractive and comforting design setting. Flooring is also used to
provide visual cues, for example the specific color inlays used in
In education, the life of a floor reflects the different ages of its users,
Metrolina Regional Scholar’s Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina
Varied Textures and Color for a Cohesive Aesthetic
Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Metrolina Regional Scholar’s Academy opened its doors in September 2010 as
a charter school for highly gifted children. Previously a call center, the vacant building was purchased by the Academy
for its central location. In this new location, they desired a sustainable story, easy maintenance and creative coloring
to increase the organization of the school’s layout. The design team at Little turned to Johnsonite for solutions.
58

METROLINA REGIONAL SCHOLAR’S ACADEMY IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
“There was a color/design intent that had many shades in order
to color coordinate the grades in the long corridors,” said Carrie
L. Estock, of Little. “With Johnsonite, I was able to maintain the
bright colors. The pattern on the Circulinity rubber floor tiles was
very unusual and helped break up a large space, giving it more of
a warm, carpeted look.”
Estock chose all flooring products that simultaneously varied
in texture, yet created a cohesive aesthetic and color palette
throughout the building. The design integrated Johnsonite’s
Mesto, Hammered and Circulinity rubber tiles as well as stair
treads into one seemingly continuous floor design.
The result is a bright, coordinated facility with an overall inclusive
feeling. “Everyone is happy to be in this new building,” said Marie
E. Peine, Ph.D., the Academy’s Director. “Areas are done in different
color groups and/or floor types – the common area, the gym,
the art room - but it all fits together.”
In a facility that houses about 350 staff and students annually,
with a limited yearly budget, maintenance costs were also a key
concern in the flooring choices.
“We chose this flooring because we are trying to support a strong
environmental ethic for our school community. The idea of no
stripping with chemicals, waxing, or needing to use other unpleasant
cleaning products was a major determining factor in our
selection of the rubber flooring. The flooring makes the building
look and sound so much brighter,” she said.
Compared to the last school facility and to the condition of the
building before the renovation, Peine says that the improvement
has been immense. “It’s almost as if they built it just for us,” she
said, “but it was much more energy and budget efficient to start
with this existing canvas.”
59

Education
METROLINA REGIONAL SCHOLAR’S ACADEMY IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
Other design highlights include the use of space, as the Main Dining area
connecting to the Media Lab, and the Stage that can be transformed to
meet many of the school’s assembly needs. To achieve the entire sustainable
and welcoming function, the lighting was changed out to use more efficient
fixtures and several windows were added to bring more daylight into
the space. In addition to using colored flooring tiles to identify spaces, the
designers also made a couple of informal spots in the building with tiles to
represent chess/checkerboards, and other color combinations.
“It’s so hard to describe how it looks with words,” adds Peine. “The level of
creativity we were able to achieve is such an asset to the environment and
the colors really work to make the space come alive.”
Science and Technology Magnet School of Southeastern Connecticut in New London, Connecticut
Encouraging Exploration and Discovery
Located in New London, Connecticut, the Science and Technology Magnet School of Southeastern Connecticut was designed
to provide its teachers with an educational tool by creating architectural and design elements that teach spatial
relationships, physics and other opportunities for lessons. The magnet high school aims to instill values, skills and
ethics that will enable its students to enter their chosen profession in science or technology. The design creates its form
using three basic mathematical geometries: orthogonal, radial and intersecting plane. The circular, two-story structure
sets the radius point for interior spaces and is the axis for the intersecting plane as well as the radius for curved
interior walls that sit within an orthogonal shape. Natural light, plenty of seating space and decorative floor designs
create inviting common areas at the school.
Unlike most high schools the Science and Technology Magnet School of New London, Connecticut, was designed to be more a learning
tool for its students than a facility. All design elements - the buildings’ structure, lighting, stairwells and common areas - are all spaces
that were intended to encourage exploration and discovery. The New London High School needed a flooring option that could transition
into a variety of environments but that also had tremendous design flexibility in order to provide the stimulating floor designs Friar Associates
Inc. envisioned for the space.
Cortina Grande commercial resilient tile offered the design flexibility,
aesthetics, maintenance qualities and cost requirements to
meet the facility’s needs. With a wide range of color options and
superior performance warranty, Cortina Grande provided the right
flooring solution.
About the Partnership with Friar Associates Inc.
The Friar Associates architect and design team were pleased with
Cortina Grande’s design flexibility, color range and reduced maintenance
qualities. These elements of Cortina Grande allowed their
flooring design to come to life and help create a cheerful and
stimulating workspace within the school. The flooring design was
integrated with the overall concept for the building, which was to
provide an ideal blend of inspiration and application. In fact, Azrock,
Friar Associates and BKM Floorcovering were honored as the
2007 grand-prize winners of the prestigious StarNet Design Award
for the Science and Technology Magnet School of Southeastern
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) School in Akron, Ohio
Renovation Project Revives Local Landmark
Located in Northern Ohio, this local landmark was originally designed to house the National Inventors Hall of Fame,
a museum showcasing inventors throughout U.S. history. With un-met expectations the building was repurposed and
began a new mission as an innovative public middle school serving grades 5-8. Its new resident, a STEM School, was
an appropriate tenant. Their school vision: to provide the highest quality education experience for students ensuring
creativity and inventive thinking through a focus on science, mathematics and technology.
64

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) SCHOOL IN AKRON, OHIO
“For a school focused on creative problem solving, the design
and construction of the school was in itself an example of finding
imaginative solutions to complex challenges,” commented Scott
Lukens, AIA, LEED AP of Hasenstab Architects. Existing on 1.8
acres, with a 35-foot drop in grade from east to west, the architects
were challenged to add the additional floor area necessary
to the existing facility to meet the space requirements for the
new school. The result is a six-story school with two floors falling
below ground. As the site is arranged vertically, school grades are
divided by floor with the younger students starting on the ground
level and progressing upward each year. Taking advantage of the
below-ground floors, nosier areas such as music rooms, a gym and
cafeteria were situated on these lower floors to alleviate sound
interference with classrooms.
For the flooring, Lukens was interested in a product that was
durable and available in a wide range of colors. “Johnsonite’s
Roundel Rubber Tiles provided us a longer lasting product with
less maintenance requirements compared to alternative flooring
materials. We have applied for LEED Silver Certification from the
U.S. Green Building Council for the building addition. The use of
this rubber product assisted concerning the recycled materials and
rapidly renewable credits for this application.”
Other sustainable design features include low-flow plumbing,
lighting occupancy sensors, increased use of natural lighting for
students via glass and skylights and natural heating/cooling for
the below grade classrooms. More than 30% of the building materials
are regionally manufactured and harvested and over 30% of
the materials are recycled.
Milton Keynes Academy, UK
Intelligent Flooring Creates Brighter Learning
The brand new Milton Keynes Academy opened its doors to pupils for the first time in September 2009. Complete with
over 65,500 sq. ft. of iQ constructed flooring products, the $39.5M state-of-the-art building will accommodate over
1,500 pupils and 200 staff. The ground floor is home to specialist departments such as sciences, music, arts and design
and technology, and Granit was installed throughout these areas.
66

MILTON KEYNES ACADEMY, UK
Outstanding quality, performance and design
Nick Perkins of Hi-Tech Flooring was pleased to be working with our
reps on the project: “They were very helpful throughout the whole
process, from pricing and procurement through to installation. Our
installers really enjoy using these products, as they’re flexible and
easy to work with, and they look great when they’re finished too.”
Granit flooring is part of the iQ constructed range, offering the
best life cycle costs on the market together with outstanding
quality, performance and design characteristics. Made from highquality
raw materials, Granit guarantees no wax or polish will ever
be needed. The unique surface restoration means it is possible
to fully restore the flooring surface to its original appearance and
properties with simple dry buffing, giving extreme longevity and
minimizing maintenance costs.
Safe, hygienic and easy to clean
Students of the new Academy were consulted throughout the
build process and one of their concerns was to make the toilet
areas more light and open to prevent incidents of bullying and
misbehavior. In order to ensure they were also safe underfoot,
Granit Multisafe was installed. The dense, impermeable surface
and well-rounded studs make Granit Multisafe hygienic and easy
to clean. It was also installed in the changing rooms and shower
areas where its unique construction gives excellent bare foot slipresistance
in areas subjected to soap and water. As part of the
Granit family, Multisafe offers the same great advantages in terms
of wear resistance, low maintenance and low life-cycle costs.
MILTON KEYNES ACADEMY, UK
Adding definition and interest
The Academy’s three stories are designed around a central atrium with floor-to-ceiling
windows for plenty of natural light. Each floor houses a ‘Learning Village’ to accommodate
a particular year group, taught by teachers who come to them, breaking the
traditional timetabling regime. Granit was used in all circulation areas and stairs, as
well as in the restaurant. Within the open areas, patterns were created using different
colors of flooring to reflect the various designs of the ceiling bulkheads and voids and
to add definition and interest.
Cibolo Green Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas
True Design Potential for “Green” School
Considered one of the first “green” schools in San Antonio, Texas, Cibolo Green Elementary School (CGES) opened its
doors in August 2010. Built with a focus on energy and water conservation, CGES is constructed of materials that are
non-toxic and contain recycled content that also contribute to improved indoor air quality. The facility, which is under
review by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for a Gold LEED rating, utilizes innovative design elements to contribute
to the sustainability of this site.
The new facility needed a resilient flooring solution that
could withstand the heavy traffic and building use from
its students and faculty, yet also be easy to maintain.
Azrock Solid Vinyl Tile (SVT) and Vinyl Composition Tile
(VCT) flooring met the facility’s needs by providing the
desired aesthetics, design flexibility and maintenance
qualities. With a wide range of color options and superior
performance warranty, SVT and VCT flooring provided
the appropriate flooring solution.
“We saw true design potential in The Azrock Collection
flooring, which offered a wide range of color and custom
cut design capabilities,” stated Manuel H. Garza, LEED
AP, designer at Pfluger Associates Architects. “Plus,
the reduced maintenance properties of the floor would
contribute to the improved indoor air quality for its
students and faculty staff.”
About the Partnership with Pfluger Associates Architects
The team at Pfluger Associates Architects was pleased
with the design flexibility, color range and reduced
maintenance qualities of SVT flooring. The natural
durability of the floor and its resilience to heavy traffic
made it an excellent flooring solution for the classrooms,
corridors and stairs on the CGES campus. SVT and
VCT allowed the flooring vision to come to life by allowing
the use of several custom cut designs throughout
the school. The 53,000 square feet of VCT in classrooms
Education
The Lighthouse Christian School in Nashville, Tennessee
Unique Solution for an Extreme Makeover
Lighthouse Christian School (LCS) in Nashville, Tennessee opened in 1979. The school consists of a preschool, elementary,
middle and high school. LCS is primarily a college preparatory institution. All incoming students are placed on a
track that will allow them to receive a diploma.
In addition to educating young minds, Lighthouse Christian
School has provided shelter, food, water, clothing, counseling, and
a variety of social and financial services to the Nashville community
for over 30 years. After the flooding that damaged much of the
Nashville area in May 2010, eight of the eighteen school buildings
were severely damaged and its preschool was demolished. The
school’s finances were nearly depleted and it was faced with the
harsh reality of possibly shutting its doors.
Unique Solution
Fortunately, Lighthouse Christian School was selected as a recipient
of ABC-TV’s Emmy award-winning reality program Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition. In the timeframe of one week, the Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition design team partnered with several
businesses who supplied labor and materials as well as hundreds
of local volunteers to help with the construction project.
“We felt our Azrock tile would provide the perfect color and design
solution,” said Kathryn Holdridge, Product Manager for Tarkett.
“The broad spectrum of color allowed a welcoming and cheerful
atmosphere in a very durable tile that withstands heavy traffic
well.”
Thirteen colors of Cortina Grande and Karim Kolors were installed
in the entry way and corridors of the school. The flooring was
installed in the natural color succession of the rainbow. The
Lighthouse playroom featured five colors of Cortina Grande and
Milano. The color scheme illustrated the depth of blues in the
ocean as well as the waves and surf that splashed onto the sandy
beach which housed a Lighthouse that served as a playground for
its students.
J & J Interiors Inc. provided the commercial flooring installation
by using SpraySmart adhesive. The installers worked under
challenging circumstances and fully utilized SpraySmart adhesive.
SpraySmart adhesive sets so quickly that it allowed the installers
to efficiently lay the tile and the tack was strong enough to hold
the tiles in place, even with immediate traffic on the floor after
the installation.
72

THE LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
“Given the compressed timeline and unusual working conditions,
we felt very fortunate to make use of SpraySmart adhesive,”
stated Crump. “Once we put down the floor and walked away,
the floor stayed in place. Within minutes of laying the floor, the
construction crew brought lifts to paint the walls. If we had used
a traditional adhesive, the floor would not have adhered to the
subfloor or withstood the amount of heavy traffic immediately
after installation.”
Lighthouse Christian School needed a colorful resilient flooring
solution that was durable enough to withstand high traffic, yet
easy to maintain. Karim Kolors commercial resilient tiles offered
the design flexibility, aesthetics and maintenance qualities to
meet the facility’s needs. With a wide range of color options and
superior performance warranty, Azrock’s commercial homogeneous
tile provided the right flooring solution.
About Project Contributors
The design team for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode
featuring the rebuild of The Lighthouse School included Ty
Pennington, Paul DiMeo, Tracy Hutson and Leigh Anne Tuohy,
interior designer and subject of the nationally acclaimed movie
“The Blind Side.” Nashville-based Dryden Abernathy Architecture
Design (DA|AD) led the architecture and engineering team with LP
Building Products and HARDAWAY Construction Corp. acting as the
two primary construction firms. J & J Interiors Inc. provided the
commercial flooring installation. In addition to several businesses
donating material and labor, hundreds of local volunteers joined
the construction effort. This group accomplished the daunting
task of building a new structure in one week, which normally takes
construction crews multiple months to complete.
Linoleum flooring: a natural choice
The interior designers created a floor based
on 450 separate rectangles, each 6’ x 3’,
to be welded together to form a striking
pattern. This was a great challenge for
both the flooring material and the installers.
Since the demands also included
low-maintenance properties, Harmonium
is a natural material, made from renewable
resources and manufactured with great
concern for the environment.
Solutions in Higher Education
UCLA was founded in 1919 as a public, coeducational, research university. Their current enrollment totals nearly
40,000 students.
With classrooms and lecture halls in use from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and as many as 600 students using a single classroom in any given day,
UCLA was looking for a flooring that would pay for itself by reducing maintenance and increasing productivity.
“Johnsonite’s rubber flooring is easy to maintain which is a big part of UCLA’s value equation,” said Carol Conrad, Office of AVC General
Services at UCLA. “I see Johnsonite flooring as an investment in productivity versus carpet, which is a short-term and short-sighted
solution. Higher education is a highly competitive business and investing in elements that can make people safer and more comfortable
pays dividends.”
Grange Academy in Kilmarnock, UK
Leading the Way Around the Campus
Harmonium xf linoleum flooring is helping students and staff find their way around the new $92.4M Grange Academy
in Kilmarnock. Home to over 1,800 students, the new campus brings together pupils from the Grange Academy, Annanhill
Primary and special needs pupils from Park School. Over 32,291 sq. ft. of Harmonium xf linoleum flooring has been
GRANGE ACADEMY IN KILMARNOCK, UK
Impressive finish and look
Harndec Flooring carried out the installations and were
delighted with the overall result, as Alisdhair McIndoe, Commercial
Director commented “Having worked with Harmonium
xf on a number of projects in the past, we were happy to be
working with it again here. When Harmonium xf is installed by
quality, time-served craftsmen, the finish and look is always
impressive and the Grange is no exception.”
Natural, sustainable flooring solution
We have been producing linoleum flooring for over 100 years
using raw materials like cork, resin, jute and linseed oil that
help to make it a natural, sustainable flooring solution. With a
naturally antibacterial and inherently strong surface that has
the ability to self-heal scratches and damage, linoleum is an
ideal choice for busy environments. Harmonium’s xf surface
treatment further enhances its resistance to abrasion, stains
and chemicals and makes cleaning and maintenance easier and
more economical, with savings of more than 50% on water,
detergent and energy.
A choice of 70 colors
The central spine of the new school complex incorporates a lot
of shared facilities, including the main ‘street’; a wide circulation
zone that also serves as a dining area. Harmonium xf
provided the necessary hard-wearing flooring solution, and the
choice of 70 color references enabled several intricate designs
Community Learning Center and
Elementary School in Akron, Ohio
Shared Use of a
Variety of Spaces
The new construction of this inner city elementary
school (K-5) and Community Learning
Center was an opportunity for it to continue as
a source of stability and support to this Akron,
Ohio neighborhood.
“There was great potential in this project to incorporate
locally-funded and community-funded initiatives
above the base Ohio School Facilities Program of
Requirements,” said John T. Wheeler, AIA, LEED BD+C
of Braun and Steidl Architects, Inc.
Situated on a small triangular site, the architects
took care to arrange the building layout with internal
spaces designated for both elementary school
and Community Learning Center usage. Designed to
accommodate 435 students, a two-story classroom
wing provides separation from the community-oriented
spaces used after school hours. Larger public
restrooms, a media center, art and music rooms and
multi-purpose classrooms, orientated to the main
entrance allow for shared use of a variety of spaces.
For the flooring, the building owners were interested
in a beautiful and clean looking floor that would allow
for color and a unique design to be incorporated
into each space. A low VOC product, with a long life
was also desired by both the owner and architects.
“Johnsonite’s Prima Marbleized Rubber Floor tiles
were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance.
The initial premium cost of the product is
offset by its life cycle costs,” said Wheeler. “Rubber
sustainability and low VOC installation also contributed
to its selection.”
Johnsonite’s custom capabilities allowed the designers
to select their own colors to meet the owner’s
desire for a unique design throughout the facility’s
Design Flexibility
A state-of-the-art education facility designed for
students from pre-school to twelfth grade, the
Green Valley Ranch campus opened its doors for
school in August 2010. The 35-acre campus serves
Northeast Denver, which is one of the fastest growing
areas in the city. The facility incorporates a
range of sustainable energy and utility reducing
features, making it one of the most energy efficient
schools in Denver Public Schools (DPS) and in
Colorado. The new campus consists of five buildings
that include one elementary school, one middle
school, one high school and one Commons Building
with shared public spaces, plus a regional sports
complex.
84

GREEN VALLEY RANCH HIGH SCHOOL IN AURORA, COLORADO
The Commons Building, which houses the common areas of the
campus such as the cafeteria, needed a colorful resilient flooring
solution that was durable enough to withstand high traffic, yet
easy to maintain. Cortina Grande and SolidAir commercial resilient
tiles offered the design flexibility, aesthetics, maintenance
qualities and cost requirements to meet the facility’s needs. With
a wide range of color options and superior performance warranty,
Cortina Grande and SolidAir provided the right flooring solution.
The team at Commercial Flooring Services was pleased with the
design flexibility, color range and reduced maintenance qualities
of Cortina Grande and SolidAir. The natural durability of the floor
and its resilience to heavy traffic made it an excellent flooring
solution for the Commons Building at the Green Valley Ranch campus.
Cortina Grande and SolidAir allowed the flooring design to
come to life and helped create cheerful and open common spaces
within the Commons Building. The flooring design was integrated
with the overall concept for the building, which was created to
provide an open, inviting and cheerful environment.
Malone University in Canton, Ohio
Bold Color Enhances College Dining Hall Experience
Malone University is a private, faith-based Liberal arts college located in Canton, OH. With over 2,500 students living
on the campus, the school’s renovation of the dining commons needed to create a dynamic place for the campus community
to dine and socialize as well as to support the everyday traffic and wear without any added maintenance.
A Dining Experience
Like a kitchen in a home, dining halls on college and university campuses often serve as a central hub for people to gather, socialize,
relax and of course, eat. When Malone University began the renovation of its dining commons they wanted to create a dining experience
– a place that was exciting and lively for current and prospective students as well as faculty and staff to gather and enjoy meals. To help
90

MALONE UNIVERSITY IN CANTON, OHIO
create this atmosphere, the university was looking for a texture
and color palette that transcended the institutional look of many
dining halls, and instead provided a light and bright look for the
Malone community. The resulting design uses bold colors—bright
greens, oranges and yellows—which are incorporated from floor to
ceiling. Because the colors were such a key element in the design,
the university needed a floor that could match the paint, furniture
and décor precisely. With over 40 colors and corresponding welding
rods, Johnsonite’s Optima homogenous sheet and tile flooring
was selected for the project.
Resisting Wear
Because the renovation was for a dining hall, which already
requires more daily maintenance than other facilities, the team
needed a flooring product that would not entail several additional
steps to keep the original finish. As a part of the larger Johnsonite
family of homogeneous products, Optima provides unique
characteristics such as high durability, greater density, better flexibility
and less residual indentation. And, Optima requires fewer
chemicals and less upkeep than other flooring products—a benefit
to the consumer and to the environment. As the hall has been in
use, Jim Palone, Director of Physical Plant at the university says
the floor has been able to withstand the daily wear and tear of its
intended use. “We see a lot of foot traffic as well as sliding chairs
and tables on this floor,” he said, “and yet the floor still looks
quite new.”
Creative Dining
Working in a college environment, the renovation was on a tight
three-month summer construction schedule. Optima flooring was
chosen for its varied color options as well as ease of installation,
which insured that the project was completed before the start
of the fall term. “The necessity of our timeline meant that we
couldn’t allow for any delays in the schedule and we didn’t want
to give up any details of our flooring design,” said Kristin Maiorano,
interior designer with Baker, Bednar, Snyder & Associates Inc.
“Thanks to Johnsonite and the contractors all working together,
we met our deadline and the pattern looks great.”
Education
High Point Academy
in Aurora, Colorado
Playful Interaction
between Design
Elements
Located in Aurora, Colorado, High Point Academy
(HPA) is a Pre-K through eighth grade charter
school currently serving 565 students. Their mission
is to provide a strong foundation of academic
excellence in partnership with family and community
in which each individual is challenged to
achieve his/her highest potential academically,
socially and personally.
High Point Academy opened in 2006 and spent the first
four and a half years of its existence in a temporary campus
made up of 14 modular classrooms. “Our motivation
for building the facility was simple,” said Annette Sloan,
Director of Communications at HPA. “We needed a wellmade,
permanent facility in which to educate our growing
student population.”
The designers at SLATERPAULL Architects were challenged
to push the boundaries of school design with a space that
could be arranged and used in a multitude of ways, while
also considering the school’s limited budget. “Charter
schools have great goals and creative energy, but their
budgets are limited both for construction and maintenance
afterward,” commented Cheryl Bicknell of SLATER-
PAULL Architects. “ Product cost and then care were major
considerations for this project. We wanted to provide an
easy-care product, that would maintain its beauty for
the long term, while also meeting our sustainable design
goals.”
Taking advantage of the building’s tilt-up concrete construction,
the designers were able to create textures and
shapes with changes in the structure’s form work and liners.
With manipulations to shapes and sizes of panels and
added texture, they were able to add playfulness to the
design and bring colors and shapes from the exterior of
92

HIGH POINT ACADEMY IN AURORA, COLORADO
the building in. These elements are reflected in the hallway
floors, ceiling soffits, classrooms and paint colors.
For the flooring, Bicknell turned to Johnsonite. “We
wanted to create an interplay between texture, color
and light with the flooring and lighting design. The
color availability with Johnsonite’s Optima was immediately
exciting. As a no-wax, no-finish for life product,
it’s ease of care and initial cost also factored into its’
selection. Because of these factors, we are also specifying
this product on other projects where we may have
previously used a competitor.”
SLATERPAULL’s commitment to sustainability led to other
design highlights including low V.O.C. paints and finishes,
daylight optimization with classroom orientation,
window selection and placement, energy efficient light
fixtures and occupancy sensor lighting controls. Native
seed grasses were also incorporated into the landscaping
to reduce irrigation needs and water consumption.
Bold colors are also used throughout the facility for
way finding and identifying student age levels. The
excitement for the school’s colorful interiors has been
a constant theme for students. “The floors get a lot of
attention,” added Sloan. “During our first few weeks, our
students couldn’t stop talking about the colors on the
floors and the corresponding wall colors. They love the
look.”
Timken High School in Canton, Ohio
Space as a Learning and Educational Facility
Located in Canton, Ohio, Timken High School offers a unique instructional approach to education by providing its 1,300
students the opportunity to focus their academic careers within Arts, Services or Technology.
Wanting to increase safety without giving up aesthetics, Timken was looking for a long-life flooring that would also be easy to maintain.
Johnsonite’s Rubber Flooring and Flooring Accessories were identified as the answer to the issues that the school was facing. Motter and
Meadows Architects chose Johnsonite flooring based on the durability rubber flooring brings to any space. Its acoustical properties also
help reduce noise which is essential for any learning environment.
94

TIMKEN HIGH SCHOOL IN CANTON, OHIO
“We wanted to build an identity for Timken, to create
a team spirit where it had been lacking. We wanted
the students to identify with the space,” said Rodney
Meadows of Mottar and Meadows Architects. “The overall
result has exceeded our expectations and our original
vision. It is what education should look like in the 21st
century. It excites the kids to come to school.”
The faculty and students were also thrilled with the
outcome. “There was a quiet WOW when the students
first arrived after the renovation. There is also a huge
difference in their behavior,” commented Principal Kim
Redmond of Timken High School. “They are appreciative
of the opportunities that this space has created.”
“We believe the new facility is more attractive to the
community, creating more appeal for public schools
rather than competing schools in the area. Enrollment is
up 200 students versus last year, partly due to this new
facility.”
I.D. Premier, a collection inspired by nature
Wood is a permanent fixture, regardless of the market.
In all situations, it is characterized by the natural charm
of its design, its simplicity and its visual warmth. It was
for this reason that I.D. Premier received Fnac’s vote and
that of its design agency, Interbrand/Architral, when it
came to enhancing its 64,583 sq ft. book floor.
Excellent dimensional stability
The most important selection criteria for the decisionmakers
and specifiers centered on the exceptional
performance offered by this range of flooring. From a
technical point of view, I.D. Premier performs very well
when it comes to withstanding heavy loads, it also has
excellent dimensional stability properties thanks to its
glass fiber-reinforced layer. It is also very easy to maintain
as a result of its polyurethane surface treatment.
Enhancing working conditions
Aesthetically, this heterogeneous flooring is very similar
to that of the original material. “The realistic wood look
of the I.D. Premier line naturally extends an element
of the outdoors into the interior of the building set in
an urban area of Paris”, confides Fnac’s sales staff, for
whom the new peaceful atmosphere on the floor has
significantly enhanced their working conditions. And six
months from completion of this work, they have also
noted that the design of the entire floor also inspires
a sense of calm and patience in their
customers.
The I.D. Premier product was fitted
using staggered joints, just like real
strips were inserted seamlessly between
the bevelled edges.This fitting method
along with the silver feature strips call
to mind the very appealing image of
feature strips are available in a variety
of colors for the I.D. Premier line.
SJ Railway Travel Center in Eskilstuna, Sweden
A Relaxing Place for Busy People
SJ is the National Railway in Sweden. Their pilot travel center and shop is located in Eskilstuna, just outside Stockholm.
The total renovation project includes 89 more shops to be redecorated in the same way. This pilot shop is located
at the railway station, with entry directly from the street, and is visited by many travellers every day.
A welcoming feeling
One of the reasons for the renovation project
was that the space suffered from a dreary
atmosphere and bad acoustics. The interior designers
wanted to create a welcoming feeling.
The flooring was chosen to strongly support
a warm and relaxed atmosphere for a place
visited by many people in a great hurry. At
the same time, the flooring had to withstand
heavy wear and tear, and be easy to maintain.
Heavy traffic from the street
Space Modular Tiles offered the optimal balance
in response to the demands in the shop
area, while Harmonium xf was the best solution
for the office area. Space is a compact
vinyl modular tile that is ideal for heavy
traffic areas. It offers colors and design
effects that give a soft, sophisticated look.
The flooring has excellent performance,
including superior wear resistance and
exceptional maintenance properties.
Modularity saves time and money
Space modular flooring makes an extremely
smart and flexible solution, that cuts down
adhesive consumption and labor during
installation. The tiles are quick and easy
to lay – no glue, no hot welding – and it is
also easy to replace damaged tiles individually.
We are very proud of our 16-year
appointed to supply flooring for
its store-remodeling program. We
were selected following a successful
in 2006, and were involved in the
MARKS & SPENCER IN GILLINGHAM, UK
Genuine green credentials
Following the launch of Plan A, M&S’ business wide, $264 million,
five year ‘eco-plan’, the company is looking at ways to become
carbon neutral, work with products from sustainable sources and
minimize waste across its store remodel program. These are important
criteria not just for the products the company manufactures
and sells but also for the raw materials used in store construction.
We won the contract due to our product history, performance,
price and most importantly, our genuinely green credentials. The
Granit line was specified following a site visit, by a Marks & Spencer
representative, to the company’s Swedish factory to assess
processes and sustainable methodologies.
Reduced need for water and chemicals
Importantly for Marks & Spencer, Granit’s maintenance requirements
are beneficial to the environment because they greatly
reduce the need for water and chemicals to maintain them. Additionally,
Johnsonite has achieved ISO 140001 accreditation for
its environmental management systems.
Beige Granit tiles were specified in the general merchandise areas
located at the front of the store and black tiles for use in Marks &
Spencer Simply Food stores, including the franchise stores operated
by Moto and B.P., and M&S Food Halls. The tiles are 24” x
24” with accent color chips within both.
We recycle clean waste into new material
Granit is a low maintenance, durable, homogeneous vinyl
floor covering, and is one of the best flooring solutions
currently available. Not only for quality, performance and
design, but also for the best lifecycle cost on the market. No
wax or polish is ever needed, just dry buffing, throughout the
lifetime of the flooring. Maintenance is reduced by up to 30%
and is therefore substantially more cost effective in terms of
both labor and materials.
The Arsenal Store in London, UK
Standing the Test
of Crowding Fans
Over 4,300 sq. ft. of Granit flooring has been installed as
part of a major refurbishment of The Arsenal Store retail
outlet in Finsbury Park, London. The store sells a range of
Arsenal Football Club memorabilia, as well as replica kits
and other related items.
Cope with heavy daily use
When choosing the new flooring for the refurbishment, it was essential
to find a low maintenance, hardwearing solution, as Chris Slater
of B U Flooring explains. “Due to the high foot traffic through the
store each week, it was important to select a floor that could cope
with heavy daily use while also being easy to maintain. iQ constructed
flooring is ideal for this type of installation as it requires very
little maintenance to keep it looking good. We are very pleased with
the results at the Arsenal Store.”
No wax or polish
Granit was installed throughout the public areas of the store. As part
of the iQ constructed range of homogeneous vinyl’s, Granit is made
with high-quality raw materials. No wax or polish is ever needed and
the amount of energy, water and chemicals needed for cleaning is
significantly reduced, offering environmental benefits as well as cost
savings.
Updated and re-launched
Not only does Granit offer outstanding lifecycle costs, it also comes
in a wide selection of colors and patterns, recently updated and
re-launched, that allow architects and interior designers to create
contemporary and attractive designs. With over 645,000,000 sq. ft.
already installed worldwide over the last 40 years, Granit is one of the
best-proven materials on the market.
Kelly Hall YMCA in Chicago, Illinois
Focused on Recycling and Reusing Materials
Located in Chicago, Illinois, the Kelly Hall YMCA, a collaboration between the Archdiocese of Chicago and the YMCA
of Metropolitan Chicago, opened its doors in January 2009. Updated with a $2.3 million renovation, the facility now
has a new roof and new flooring throughout as well as new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. The new YMCA will
provide a safe haven for the community and a wide range of services, including after-school programs for neighborhood
children, gang intervention services, activities for seniors, a new food pantry stocked by the Greater Chicago Food
Depository, and a computer lab and fitness center for all residents.
The building’s renovation project focused on recycling and reusing
materials. In fact, all building materials removed from the facility
were sent to a recycler and a large portion of the materials
used were recycled or reused in some way. Working with a neutral
color palette in common spaces and more dynamic color choices
in specific areas, the facility showcases a broad color spectrum.
The most colorful spaces include the multipurpose and arts and
crafts rooms. Emphasizing color and design, Azrock donated its
Orange County, California
Motivating Space
Foote, Cone and Belding, a major global advertising
agency with full, integrated communications services and
top-10 rankings in many major markets, was looking for
a renovation that would inspire people and help brand
their space. With Johnsonite’s flooring, they were able to
accomplish just that. Their space differentiates them from
their competition, motivates their staff and inspires their
clients, creating value for their brand.
“Before we created this space, our clients used to have us go to
their offices for meetings. Now they want to come here,” said Connie
Kozlowski, Director of Agency Operations at Foote, Cone and
Belding. “Without all that extra travel time, our people are more
productive. And our clients are more creative when they work in
our space.”
“Productivity is hard to measure in a creative field like advertising,”
adds Kozlowski. “But it’s not brain surgery to recognize that
when people like their space, it motivates them. Because they like
being here, they don’t rush out at the end of the day.”
Nova Southeastern University Sport Complex in Davie, Florida
Productivity in an Athletic Environment
This revolutionary 300,000 square foot, multi-use facility serves as a central hub for the 26,000 students that attend
Nova Southeastern University. Located on a beautiful 300-acre campus in Davie, NSU is the largest independent institution
of higher education in Florida.
124

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY SPORT COMPLEX IN DAVIE, FLORIDA
With students leaving campus to train at outside, less functional
facilities, Nova was in need of a high-performance sports complex
that would motivate students and faculty without sacrificing
resilience. Choosing Johnsonite’s flooring gave NSU the durability
within their sports complex that they were looking for, while also
incorporating the aesthetic values that matched NSU colors and
spirit.
A high-performance sports complex has influence over a student’s
decision about the school that they will attend and Nova was very
happy with the results. “The students couldn’t help but be in awe
Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California
Space as an Astronomical Learning Center
As the world leader in public astronomy, Griffith Observatory has been a beloved icon of Los Angeles since 1935. It has
been known as a symbol of the community coming together, working towards peace and love. Through the years Griffith
has educated over 70 million visitors on the heavenly bodies of the solar system.
In 2002, Griffith Observatory decided to close its doors for a complete renovation of its facility. Due to decades of use some of the original
flooring throughout the observatory was in desperate need of repair. Griffith was interested in having an exact replica of the original
colorways and turned to Johnsonite for a solution.
126

GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Johnsonite’s Prima Marbleized rubber flooring was the answer
to Griffith’s problem. Brenda Levin from Levin and Associates
Architects sent pieces of the original flooring in to Johnsonite’s
customization specialist as reference. To her surprise, we sent her
samples of tiles that matched the original flooring perfectly. Griffith
was able to retain parts of the original flooring by intermixing
it with Johnsonite Rubber Tiles.
“Johnsonite was able to give the observatory the opportunity to
restore its original 1935 look for their grand reopening,” explained
Mark Pin, Deputy Executive Director of the Friends of the Observatory.
“It was important to us, and to the local community, to keep
in tact the heritage of this historical building. We thank Johnsonite
128

VOETBAL EXPERIENCE IN MIDDLEBURG, NETHERLANDS
Searching for the right look
The Voetbal Experience building is a stylish and highly technical
facility that must meet both functional and aesthetic demands.
The interior design is part of the experience, and the designers
wanted to create a characteristic look that enhanced the football
theme feeling. Since the focus was on design, the Acczent and
Harmonium xf flooring offered all the opportunities that were
asked for. The combination of Harmonium xf and Acczent Woodcreated
the desired look.
Easy and low-cost maintenance
The Acczent line offers excellent cleaning and maintenance properties
thanks to PUR reinforcement, which means no wax or polish
is needed at any stage. The surface treatment also gives excellent
resistance to scratches and abrasion, and to scuffing, soiling and
staining. Harmonium xf is also surface-treated to offer unique
cleaning and maintenance properties. The Voetbal Experience facility
is totally designed for exploration, fun and play, unrestricted
The Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden
Linoleum Flooring Reflecting History
The Vasa Museum is a maritime museum in Stockholm, located on the island of Djurgården. The museum displays the only
almost fully intact 17th century ship ever salvaged, the 64-gun warship Vasa, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.
The Vasa Museum opened in 1990 and claims to be the most visited museum in Scandinavia, with more than 100,000
visitors from all over the world every year.
130

A historical environment
Renovation of the exhibition room imposed several
demands on the flooring. The aim was to install a historical
flooring material in a historical environment. It
should convey the same “old and traditional” feeling as
the rest of the museum. At the same time, it should be
extremely hardwearing and easy to maintain.
Harmonium xf met the demands
Linoleum flooring is a genuine material that has been
used with more or less the same construction for over
100 years. As a natural product, made from renewable
raw materials, linoleum flooring has much to offer in
terms of aesthetic and emotional values. Harmonium xf
also has strong cleaning and maintenance benefits. The
xf surface protection gives superior resistance to abrasion
and chemicals as well as easy cleaning and maintenance.
Advanced design theme
The Vasa ship is constructed with oak timbers. For the
exhibition room in the Vasa Museum, the design theme
uses the shape of the oak cell. The flooring installation,
resembling an enormous jigsaw puzzle, was very
demanding. The pieces were all of different shapes and
sizes, and were precision-cut using a water jet. They
were numbered and installed with great accuracy. The
walls, displays and textile ceilings all have the same
colors as the linoleum flooring. The result is
very impressive and attracts a lot of positive
attention from visitors.
