In contrast, during hours 7-72 <strong>of</strong> the study, the<br />

ST group experienced higher APACHE II (Acute<br />

Physiology <strong>and</strong> Chronic Health Evaluation) scores,<br />

greater vasopressor requirements, <strong>and</strong> a greater rate<br />

<strong>of</strong> ventilator dependent respiratory failure <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

pulmonary artery catheters. This study emphasizes the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> the first few hours <strong>of</strong> management in<br />

patients with severe sepsis.<br />
