JESUS ARMY GIVES OUT THOUSANDS OF RED CROSSES ACROSS UK
CROSS MY HEART Jesus Army red crosses are popular
FAG BEHIND the ear, red cross
round the neck.
These lads and girls love to wear
Jesus Army fluoro-red crosses.
Religious snobs may find it shocking.
But the Jesus Army loves real people.
We all want to belong to something
worth living for, to have an identity
with some hope. And we all feel
inner pain. Maybe Dad wasn’t there
for us. Anger burns inside. We feel
abandoned and let down.
“I felt aimless. Life had no real
point” says John. “Sometimes
hopelessness suddenly dropped on
me for no reason. ‘Why bother?’ I
thought.”
“I wanted something better; to
know who I really am and to make
something of my life.”
Wearing a red cross can be a first
step to connecting with the real
Jesus who transforms hurting lives.
Jesus is calling people to be part of a
movement: why not give it a go?
THE PHAnToM of the
opera is one of the
greatest musical hits of
all time.
Since 1986, when it opened in
London’s West End, it has become
one of the longest running shows
in theatrical history. Productions of
the musical have been performed
all around the world. It has made
a fortune for its creator, Andrew
Lloyd Webber.
Huge interest surrounded
the opening of the sequel to
Phantom earlier this year. The
new musical, Love Never Dies,
features the characters from
the previous story including the
Phantom himself and the great
love of his life, Christine Daae.
Does love never die? Certainly,
our interest in love is unending.
Love is mysterious, evocative,
desirable. We long to experience
powerful love – that never ends
or leaves us.
In practice, though, what’s our
experience of love? Romance
grows cold, marriages suffer
and break down because the
passion goes out of them. Even
the strongest friendships can fall
apart. What is love anyway?
Jesus said “There is no
greater love than to lay down
one’s life for one’s friends”. He
then demonstrated love like that,
by dying for us on the cross. He
gives us His Spirit now so we
can know His love.
Have you experienced this
dying – but ever living and
everlasting love?

raver
trips into
reality
Mad voices
told druggy Pete
Sargeson, 22, that he’d
lost it. Then God stepped in.
HE’D HIT rock bottom.
After an evening of
snorting coke at a
mate’s, Pete staggered
down the street hearing
a babble of crazy
voices inside his head,
blabbering nonsense.
“This is it” he thought,
“I’ve lost it. Time to top
myself.”
A whisper of childhood
faith surfaced. In desperation,
Pete prayed, “God,
please help me!”
Suddenly all the mad
voices stopped; a very
different voice replaced
them. Pete felt God saying
that he could change,
could leave the mess of his
life and start again.
“I cried my eyes out”
says Pete. “My life changed
from that moment.”
Pete’s life hadn’t always
been so dramatic. His
early childhood, on a
council estate in Hull, was
“poor, but happy”. School
was “friendly, a relaxed ‘no
uniform’ place”. Sunday
school was where Pete
first believed in God. Life
was simple.
He didn’t even know
that his mum and dad
were taking heroin.
Help came when the
family visited Pete’s aunt
and uncle who were church
leaders, and Pete’s parents
became Christians. The
family moved to be part
of the Jesus Army. Pete
remembers a “few good
years”, going with his dad
to help put up the Jesus
Army’s big tent for summer
festivals, and playing
in the large ground of one
the Jesus Army’s Christian
community houses in
Birmingham.
Sadly, Pete’s parents left
the church when Pete was
about 12
and a downward
spiral
for the family
followed.
Pete’s older
sister got
into drugs.
Pete first
s m o k e d
cannabis at
age 13.
When his
sister had
a baby and
his parents
split up
all around
the same
time, Pete
gave up on
school: “I
couldn’t be
arsed”.
But a positive
influence in Pete’s
life was the Christian holidays
that his aunt and
uncle took him on. On
PETE Looking lively
one of these holidays, in
Cornwall, Pete had had
quite a powerful experience
of God, which led to
him being baptised as a
Christian.
Back home, Pete found it
hard to keep his faith alive.
Before long the buzz of
knowing God was replaced
with something more readily
to hand: ecstasy and the
rave scene.
At raves, arms in the
air and pilled up, Pete felt
s o m e t h i n g
like he’d felt
when he was
b a p t i s e d .
But, deep
down, he
knew it was
a cheap fake
next to the
real thing.
O n e
of Pete rave
mates, Paul,
was a bit of
a seeker and
was friends
with none
other than
the Jesus
Army people
that Pete had
known in his
c h i l d h o o d .
Reluctantly
at first, Pete
went with Paul to some
Jesus Army events.
But it took his brush
with insanity and death on
t h e
n i g h t
a f t e r
he’d snorted
coke for Pete to
realise where he
really belonged.
After that, Pete knew
– really knew: “My life had
found its direction, its
meaning.”
Some things still took a
while to catch up. “I’d stay
at the Jesus Army house
in the week and get pissed
at the weekends” he grins,
rueful.
But that was more then
three years ago. 2007 was
the last year he took an
illegal drug.
At RAW, the Jesus
Army’s youth event that
summer, Pete smoked his
last ever fag. Later that
year he moved into the
Jesus Army house – full
time.
Good things are happening
in Pete’s family,
too: “We’re in the same
big family” says Pete, “and
God’s working on us.”
Now Pete speaks of having
a vision to lead a house
of his own and to help
other find the same lifetransforming
power that
he has found.
“I’ve got one thing to say
to young people out there
who are wondering what
life’s all about” says Pete:
“Come and belong.”
“WE WANT to show
people what God is
like” says Jesus Army
member, Ruth, 20. “He’s
not just looking down
on us all, disapproving.
He loves us.
“That’s why, we gave out
‘free hugs’. Society in general
can be standoffish”
Ruth adds. “But people
really loved it, it went down
really well.”
“Like all the media hype
over ‘Broken Britain’,
Christians too often come
across as moaners with
axes to grind” says Chris, 34,
associate with Christians.
My brother is gay. I really
come and enjoy God’s love,
GOSPEL. We’ve heard the word, but we’re every Christmas.)
Is this the gospel? Is it nothing more than an
fuzzy about what it means. Religious.
Something to do with funky
choirs. Or with fundamentalists
(more mental than fun).
The word itself means “good
news” (from the Old English god,
good, spell, news): the good news of
the Christian message.
But – before we even get to
whether or not it’s good – is there
anything newsy about a message
that’s been public for two millennia?
Let’s face it; if “the gospel” is only about something
“up there” it’s pretty irrelevant “down here”.
lives, taking them to the grave.
But God raised Jesus from death and in
doing so launched a project, led by Jesus, to
heal the world.
And Jesus is looking for recruits. The gospel
is a call.
“Come. Dump your loveless life. Follow
Jesus. Be transformed. Live to love.”
We get used to bad news. The papers are
full of it.
But this good news is for real. God’s
guaranteed it and it’s for you.
That’s gospel truth.
LOVE Simple message: love lifts you up
‘No to iPad’ – Obama
PRESIDENT Barack
Obama raised eyebrows
recently by
appearing to criticise
the new Apple iPad.
He said that gadgets like
the iPad provided people
with too much information
of uncertain quality and
that this was a “distraction”.
President Obama went
on to say it was virtually
impossible to tell which
information was worthwhile
and solid – and what was
just noise and chatter.
It seems like fi nding
peace in our 24/7 media age
can be a real challenge. And
how can we hope to fi nd true
direction when the babble of
voices pulls us in so many
different directions?
For those who know
Him, Jesus Christ promises
peace. He said to His
followers “the peace I give is
a gift the world cannot give.”
When you tune in to
Jesus He chills you out
far better than slumping in
front of a TV screen. He
brings deep, strong peace
inside us.
You can’t buy it, you can’t
download it off the net – it’s
a spiritual thing.
And that’s not all. Those
who know Jesus hear His
voice. It’s an inner thing.
God speaks to the hearts
of believers and says “Here
I am. I love you. Follow Me.”
In a busy, distracting life, the
“still, small voice” of God
can bring calm, comfort and
sure guidance.

Christians:
all mouth
and no
trousers?
A BIG international church invites
people to pay for a night of worship
in a well-known venue in central
London. Big name speakers, big
name singers. It sounds exciting.
Many will pay to sing and dance, then
go home, buzzed up. Next day, they’ll
wake up and go to the office.
Will anything have changed?
Jim is a Christian in his mid-thirties. He
knows that Christians should live out their
beliefs and is inspired by Christian community
living. He knows it will cost him
though, so he prefers to live just like every
other middle class person. Comfortable,
unobtrusive, going nowhere.
Writer Rick Warren says about the
Christian church: “Many have amputated
the hands and feet from Christ’s Body and
kept only a big mouth.”
Christians have a bad reputation of being
“all mouth and no trousers” when it comes
to living out what they believe.
It’s sad, and it’s in direct contrast to the
instructions of the apostle Paul, who wrote
“The kingdom of God is not just a lot of
talk; it is living by God’s power”.
Let’s be specific. The early church
shared their possessions. They were persecuted
because of their uncompromising
testimony. God worked miracles among
them. They were radical non-conformists,
refusing to bow to the gods of their
age. They were a church of the poor, not
a bunch of shiny happy materialists.
They abandoned selfishness to live out
Kingdom justice and power.
How about you? Are you ready for a little
less talk – and a lot more action?
surprise to many.
Jesus was a celibate all
His life. He lived pure. He
was morally strong, but
demonstrated that celibacy
did not make Him a cold “Mr
Lonely” character.
He went to parties. People
liked Him. He was a big star
in His day, but loved normal,
everyday people. Children
found Him friendly.
Jesus shows us a new way
of being human. When we
get to know Him He makes
us free from compulsive
behaviour. He brings us into
a new way of life where we
are free to be pure in spirit
and body.
This “Jesus humanity” is
for all of us; married, single
– sometimes in unusual ways.
One young man has been
People Xtra
What made Norwegian country girl, Hannah, 22,
pack her bags and move to the UK’s Big Smoke?
PICTURE A LITTLE farm.
Pigs, a few hens, a dog and
a cat (think Postman Pat, but
the rolling hills are Norway
not Greendale). That was
Hannah’s childhood – pretty
chocolate box by anyone’s
standards.
And it was a childhood as full of
God as some are full of teddy bears:
Hannah was born and grew up in a
Christian community.
Nestled in this secure environment,
Hannah grew in simple faith.
As a 10-year-old she had a powerful
experience of God; at eleven she
was baptised as a Christian.
The original angel child.
But her teens collided with her
faith like a train. Her family moved
into a new area and Hannah struggled
to adapt, especially starting a
new school. Her unusual upbringing
meant she was mocked by her
new peers as “weird”.
“I began to hate my life, and hate
myself” says Hannah. “I actually
wanted to die – I couldn’t see the
point anymore.”
Hannah never actually attempted
suicide, but as she puts it, she “gave
up on life”. Smoking and drinking
got her in the “in crowd”, but
Hannah knew it wasn’t who she
truly was.
“I knew there must have been a
purpose for my life” says Hannah. “I
wanted to find out that purpose.”
Her breakthrough happened in
2005 when her older sister, also a
Christian, had completed a “training
year” at a Jesus Army Christian
community house in the UK. She
FRIENDS Hannah is home
invited Hannah over for a weekend.
“I was blown away!” enthuses
Hannah. “I had felt so far away from
God, and now my eyes were opened
to how I could live if I wanted to live
totally sold out for God.”
Hannah was impressed by the
open friendliness of other people
that weekend. She decided to stay
with the Jesus Army in London for
the summer.
Returning to Norway, it wasn’t
long before she grew restless and
began to miss her new friends. She
even missed sooty, smelly London.
In 2006, Hannah packed her bags,
left Norway and began a “Jesus
Army Training Year” in London.
“My view of life had been selfish”
admits Hannah; “basically, just for
me. Now my eyes have been opened
to the power of love – for each other
and everyone!”
As the year drew to its end,
Hannah was thinking hard about
her decision: what now? Some
words from the Bible leapt out
of the page at her: “You cannot
become My disciple without giving
up everything” (Luke 14:33).
Hannah made up her mind: God
was calling her to live for Him – in
London. So she stayed.
“I think it’s important to show
God that you’re serious” says
Hannah.
“Something this good is worth
paying a high price for.”
“OH MY GOD!” You
hear it everywhere. On
the bus. At the park.
In the playground.
At the shops. And
now “OMG!” is the
instant messaging
shorthand for the
same outburst.
But who is “my God”?
Which God?
OMG!
(Oh My God!)
In a documentary released
last year in America, director
Peter Rodger travelled
around the world, posing the
question: “What is God?” to
people from different places
and faiths.
The responses ranged
from confi dent “I don’t believe
in God” to confused “If you
put Buddha, Jesus Christ,
Socrates, Shakespeare, and
Krishna at a dinner table
together, I can’t see them
having any argument!”
Theories, debates, questions
and discussions about
God never end.
But what if, once upon
a time, God turned up in
person?
Well, He did – that person
is Jesus Christ.
When we look at Jesus,
we see what God is like.
Jesus said “Anyone who
has seen Me has seen
the Father”. He shows just
how committed God is to
rescuing us. His sacrifi cial,
non-violent, willing death
shows the lengths God will
go to, to soak up evil. His
resurrection shows that
death itself is no match for
God’s love.
God invites us to join this
movement of love and life.
Don’t miss out.

WET LADS?
MALE PONDING Andy and Jordan get soaked at Jesus Army lads’ camp
NAH!
These blokes
had a splashing
time on Jesus
LIKELY LADS, Andy and
Jordan, got more than they
bargained for when they
were dared to make their
own raft and cross a pond.
But breakfast was waiting for
them on the other side – let’s
hope it was a full English!
Andy and Jordan were taking
part in a Jesus Army lads’ camp,
“RAW (Real and Wild)”. At one
point, 35 or so young men were
given some pallets, barrels and
rope and challenged to get across
the pond to earn their grub.
“It was a laugh” says Jimmy, 25,
one of the camp organisers, who
was also quick to point out that
suitable risk assessments and
safety precautions were in place.
“The aim of the RAW camp is for
lads to find real, true friends that
will last the test of time, and enjoy
each others’ company.”
“We also want them to find their
next step with God” Jimmy adds,
“And especially for people who
don’t know anything about Jesus
to experience Him.”
The camp was also a way of
promoting a much larger “RAW”
youth event – for lads and girls
– to be held at Cofton Park near
Birmingham, this summer, August
5, 6, and 7.
Are you a true believer?
WORLD CUP fever.
Media hype ‘ere
we go. Hope rises
across the country.
An HD TV advert captures
the feelings of many: “50
million believers”.
We’re a nation of
believers. Believers in
England – triumphant! First
time since 1966...
Against all the odds,
in the face of Brazilian,
Spanish, Italian footballing
excellence – “Come on
England!”
But what is this shared
belief, this faith, this hope
we share in the fortunes of
our national football team?
Is it real faith? Is it
genuine hope? So often
disappointed, let down?
The faith of Christians
rests in a victory already
won. It is the knowledge,
kicked off in us by God’s
powerful Spirit, that Jesus
is ruler of everything. They
know that at the cross He
took on death and kicked
it into touch, defeating
humanity’s biggest enemy
– forever.
That doesn’t mean
Christians have no problems
in life; they don’t live in
“cloud cuckoo land”. They
might break their ankle (like
Wayne Rooney), lose a
job or have a car accident.
They might sweat it out over
the closing minutes of that
crucial game.
But whatever the result,
Christians know Jesus: the
unbeatable champion of all.
In Him – we always win!
Get to know Jesus. Pray:
Jesus, I want to know who
You really are. Pour Your
Spirit into my life so I can
know Your reality, Your
power and love.
