a trust developed, and the Christians were welcomed on to<br />

hippy turf.<br />

Chapel meet<strong>in</strong>gs grew <strong>in</strong> power, and <strong>in</strong>creased to six even<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

a week, with Friday night ‘free <strong>in</strong> the Spirit’ gather<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

for the unconverted. Pr<strong>in</strong>ted cards <strong>in</strong>vited folk back to the<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> Vibro! (‘for under 30s life-seekers’).<br />

More teenagers were converted through Johnny’s testimony<br />

and <strong>in</strong> March there were over a hundred people around.<br />

Among the seven baptised was Val, the teacher, who shook<br />

under the power of God as she entered the water. Spiritual<br />

gifts were much <strong>in</strong> evidence: one man’s gums were healed;<br />

words of prophecy and wisdom flowed forth and many sang<br />

<strong>in</strong> tongues.<br />

Clearly God was hon<strong>our</strong><strong>in</strong>g this move on to the streets. Some<br />

of the new friends began to open up and come to meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

‘I’m search<strong>in</strong>g for the truth,’ said an Apache Outlaw to Malcolm<br />

one lunchtime. ‘Last night I kicked <strong>in</strong> a Keep Left sign<br />

so I could read the Scriptures better.’ More and more of these<br />

guys were identify<strong>in</strong>g with the <strong>Jesus</strong> People and respond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to their love.<br />

Rufus came that Easter with Jess and some other freaks.<br />

Most of them were high on pot, and Rufus let his guard down.<br />

They were all enc<strong>our</strong>aged to shut their eyes, hold hands, and<br />

feel God’s love. Jess thought it an improvement on the Krishna<br />

mob, but was offended by a straight who offered to replace<br />

her best patched jeans. John Cornish was ‘ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g’ hero<strong>in</strong><br />

and Paddy was stoned, but they stayed around and watched<br />

the baptisms the next day.<br />
