FIRE IN OUR HEARTS THE LORD TOOK HOLD OF BUGBROOKE<br />

Noel smiled. ‘I th<strong>in</strong>k we’ve got someth<strong>in</strong>g that might <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

you. Why don’t you come along?’<br />

So he did — that night. John Thom was lead<strong>in</strong>g a Bible study<br />

<strong>in</strong> the manse on Acts 2 — how the first believers ‘had everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> common’ (Acts 2:44). Rufus <strong>in</strong>terrupted a few times<br />

and when the meet<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ished, wandered <strong>in</strong>to the kitchen<br />

where someone was fry<strong>in</strong>g sausages.<br />

‘Wow — carnage!’ said Rufus. ‘I thought you people were<br />

spiritual.’ The brother smiled.<br />

‘Oh well, obviously it’s a place for needy people who haven’t<br />

got much savvy,’ thought Rufus, ‘...certa<strong>in</strong>ly not for the philosophical.’<br />

Noel walked <strong>in</strong>.<br />

‘Why, O why,’ Rufus asked, ‘do you feel salvation lies <strong>in</strong> y<strong>our</strong><br />

little structure? It’s all so narrow. What about all the other<br />

spiritual masters?’<br />

Noel laid his hand on his shoulder. ‘Good to see you, Rufus.’<br />

‘Yeh... well, praise the Lord anyway!’ gr<strong>in</strong>ned John Thom<br />

annoy<strong>in</strong>gly and tucked <strong>in</strong>to his sausages. Rufus sighed and<br />

asked for a lift home.<br />

‘That guy,’ said Noel, after he’d gone, ‘is go<strong>in</strong>g to be really<br />

good when he comes to the Lord.’<br />

Six or seven weeks passed. Bonds with the drug scene <strong>in</strong>creased.<br />

A ‘Life Squad’ went out to the Black Lion on Friday<br />

nights. Other hippies and bikers came along and enjoyed the<br />

atmosphere at Bugbrooke. They also appreciated the help —<br />

sometimes of a bed or a meal. One biker from the ‘Apache<br />

Outlaws’ was bailed out for theft. Slowly <strong>hearts</strong> were ga<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />
