fully <strong>in</strong>volved, they will normally enquire <strong>in</strong>to everyth<strong>in</strong>g. We<br />

enc<strong>our</strong>age them to be sure of what we are; <strong>our</strong> faith and lifestyle,<br />

<strong>our</strong> various styles of membership and all that sort of<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g, so that they can make an <strong>in</strong>telligent decision. And we<br />

have particular safeguards for those under twenty-one who<br />

want to move <strong>in</strong>to community. There’s no question of just grabb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people and pull<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong>to what we are, without them<br />

fully understand<strong>in</strong>g what is <strong>in</strong>volved!<br />

Roger: How do you answer the accusations that <strong>in</strong> community<br />

there is a potential for break<strong>in</strong>g up families and separat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

those who have jo<strong>in</strong>ed from families who are outside?<br />

Noel: We’ve no desire to break up families! Often it works<br />

the other way round, and families are reconciled, especially<br />

young people with parents. Our members generally ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

good lov<strong>in</strong>g contact with their families and visit them regularly,<br />

but, as <strong>Jesus</strong> taught, the gospel does br<strong>in</strong>g tensions. He<br />

made it clear that there would be ‘division’ <strong>in</strong> natural families,<br />

some choos<strong>in</strong>g for him, and some aga<strong>in</strong>st him.<br />

As for families <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> community houses, there is little evidence<br />

of serious family break-up. Of c<strong>our</strong>se some teenagers<br />

leave when they start work, but they keep <strong>in</strong> touch.<br />

Roger. Are people enc<strong>our</strong>aged to make friendships outside<br />

the Fellowship?<br />

Noel: Very much so. A lot of new friends are made through<br />

evangelism and work. Friendships with other Christians are<br />

often reta<strong>in</strong>ed and new ones may develop. And ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

contact with non-Christians may lead to their f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Jesus</strong><br />

too. However, it would be difficult if old friends were go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

draw someone back <strong>in</strong>to his old ways and habits, and we would<br />

caution aga<strong>in</strong>st that k<strong>in</strong>d of bad <strong>in</strong>fluence. We would also cau-<br />
