ened spirit. ‘Y<strong>our</strong> sons and daughters will prophesy, y<strong>our</strong><br />

young men will see visions, y<strong>our</strong> old men will dream dreams’<br />

(Acts 2:17). That, <strong>in</strong> a nutshell, was <strong>our</strong> need.<br />

Steve spoke about restor<strong>in</strong>g God’s house, quot<strong>in</strong>g Ezra and<br />

Haggai. There was a marked prophetic ano<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and a real<br />

sense that the Lord was com<strong>in</strong>g through: ‘You expected much,<br />

but it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew<br />

away. Why? Because of my house which rema<strong>in</strong>s a ru<strong>in</strong>, while<br />

each of you is busy with his own house’ (Hag 1:9).<br />

As Steve pressed the word home it sliced <strong>in</strong>to self-motivation.<br />

Power was at the altar of sacrifice. Whilst <strong>in</strong> full flow he<br />

suddenly stopped: ‘I’ve just seen an angel on his way with a<br />

golden bowl of oil and a scroll.’ Then he began to prophesy.<br />

The response was dramatic. People were weep<strong>in</strong>g and repent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

all over the room. Some were freed from demonic oppression.<br />

Others just cried out for their first love. A hymn<br />

they often passionately sung was this:<br />

Jerusalem, ablaze with light;<br />

The gold, the glory <strong>in</strong> the night!<br />

Gaze on her till y<strong>our</strong> spirit’s flame<br />

Leaps upward, k<strong>in</strong>dled at the name;<br />

Zion! Where <strong>Jesus</strong> reigns.<br />

The message of Haggai was poignant: ‘Who of you is left who<br />

saw this house <strong>in</strong> its former glory? How does it look to you<br />

now?’ (Hag 2:3). Some tended to look back at ‘the good old<br />

days’. There, <strong>in</strong> a hazy mist, before techno-col<strong>our</strong>, communications,<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> <strong>Army</strong>, or even evangelism, lay the quiet green<br />

fields, the noble hymns and exquisite brotherhood we had<br />
