Here were echoes from the 60s of quiet protests and hippie<br />

alternatives. ‘Gurus came to these shores by the boatload,’<br />

Rufus remarked, ‘but where were the <strong>Jesus</strong> radicals? Where<br />

were the spiritual masters with the true enlightenment?’<br />

Timothy Leary, a lead<strong>in</strong>g psychedelic, had accused the Christians<br />

of his time of be<strong>in</strong>g ‘emotionally constipated’ and unspiritual.<br />

Hopefully, <strong>in</strong> the 90s, the charge was no longer accurate.<br />

God was mak<strong>in</strong>g his people attractive to spiritual seekers.<br />

One night Nathan and Phil were out <strong>in</strong> the fields all night<br />

tripp<strong>in</strong>g on acid. Look<strong>in</strong>g up at the stars through rustl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

leaves and wav<strong>in</strong>g branches the semi-Christian searchers<br />

were spellbound. Ly<strong>in</strong>g on the cool earth they talked about<br />

God.<br />

Eventually the charm of the night gave way to a stunn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sunrise. As they revelled <strong>in</strong> the song of birds, the pure morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

light, the cool breeze and the million diamond dewdrops<br />

scattered on the grass, they worshipped. Then wild, free and<br />

loudly s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the praises of God (though still tripp<strong>in</strong>g), they<br />

danced through the dawn-streaked streets of Rugby.<br />

By July Noel had persuaded Nathan to get <strong>in</strong>volved with<br />

Jez <strong>in</strong> the multimedia project and threw a massive wad of<br />

lyrics their way. They worked non-stop <strong>in</strong> a little studio at the<br />

Farm turn<strong>in</strong>g out sounds for ‘<strong>Jesus</strong> Live’.<br />

Phil worked with Rufus on the drama side and relished<br />

friendships at the Farm. His heroes had always been the raw<br />

converted street lads like Daz and Ronnie. He was now fed<br />
