FIRE IN OUR HEARTS THE LORD TOOK HOLD OF BUGBROOKE<br />

‘made a decision’ for Christ at eighteen, but now, at college,<br />

he’d grown cynical and holy huddles annoyed him. Communism<br />

was more appeal<strong>in</strong>g. Chang<strong>in</strong>g the world — that was<br />

where it was at.<br />

He looked around.<br />

‘Good Lord!’ he thought. ‘Even Miss Campion is glow<strong>in</strong>g!’<br />

‘Notice anyth<strong>in</strong>g about Noel?’ his dad asked when he got<br />

home. ‘Well, yes,’ said John. ‘He looked like a 100 watt bulb!<br />

I had a good argument with them all about this “talk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

tongues”. Noel gave me this wither<strong>in</strong>g look. “Who are you to<br />

say a gift of God is no good?” he said. That really threw me. I<br />

thought, “You know what — he could be right!”’<br />

The Holy Spirit had begun to <strong>in</strong>vade the life of the chapel.<br />

The teenagers were very excited and enc<strong>our</strong>aged one another<br />

along. Stories flew around of talk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> tongues and see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

visions. The youngsters prayed together almost every night<br />

for revival to hit the chapel. Sometimes they ended up on the<br />

floor laugh<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Spirit. One of the lads felt someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

like a warm electric current come upon his head and travel<br />

down to his toes. The joy was immense and he shook for an<br />

h<strong>our</strong>.<br />

One of their friends, Geoff, was a fiery redhead with a character<br />

to match. Extrovert and likeable, he thought the Youth<br />

Club was all a bit of a laugh. Then one even<strong>in</strong>g when he walked<br />

<strong>in</strong>, Geoff looked really different. He’d given his life to Christ<br />

and was already baptised <strong>in</strong> the Spirit. It soon spread around<br />

the village. Geoff had ‘got religion’!<br />

Some of the youngsters jo<strong>in</strong>ed the ‘core’ group. Around<br />

twenty, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Noel, Miss Campion, and Verna, now came<br />

together <strong>in</strong> the manse to seek God. Saturday nights were times<br />
