‘The world was do<strong>in</strong>g my head <strong>in</strong>. I was a tear-away, a thug.<br />

Prison didn’t change me, it only made me worse. I changed<br />

when I decided to follow <strong>Jesus</strong>,’ he said. ‘I gave up crime and<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. It’s beautiful what <strong>Jesus</strong> can do. My mum can’t believe<br />

the change <strong>in</strong> me.’ 113<br />

When this issue reached his home town <strong>in</strong> Northern Ireland,<br />

all copies quickly sold out as people read the amaz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

news that ‘bad’ Frankie had been converted. Thousands heard<br />

Frankie tell of his conversion on Irish radio.<br />

Ronnie, a young Anglo-Indian, soon jo<strong>in</strong>ed Frankie <strong>in</strong> his<br />

pilgrimage from the streets of London to the home-fires of<br />

the Farm. As Ronnie ‘Zealous’ told me: ‘We got a lot of racial<br />

abuse <strong>in</strong> the East End. My dad got stabbed on his own doorstep.<br />

We had to board the w<strong>in</strong>dows up at night. For two years<br />

I was liv<strong>in</strong>g on the streets do<strong>in</strong>g crime and dope. I knew about<br />

God and my conscience plagued me. Then three of us were<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited up to the Farm for a weekend. As soon as I stepped<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the house I knew I belonged. I could be myself. The next<br />

day there was a wedd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> chapel. We sk<strong>in</strong>ned up and went<br />

for a smoke outside. Rufus was brilliant. He came out and<br />

prayed with us. I found the Lord <strong>in</strong> a big way.’<br />

Roger Ellis, leader of Revelation, a new youth church <strong>in</strong><br />

Chichester, made this observation to the Daily Mirror:<br />

‘Young people among us f<strong>in</strong>d a Christianity that is relevant to<br />

their everyday needs. Sometimes youngsters with nose r<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and spiky hair aren’t welcome <strong>in</strong> traditional churches. They don’t<br />

feel comfortable. We welcome anyone. We don’t say, “Get y<strong>our</strong><br />
