CITY ON A HILL<br />

surprises of the Holy Spirit? ‘Th<strong>in</strong>gs have become rout<strong>in</strong>e,’<br />

wrote Mike ‘Rockfast’ <strong>in</strong> his diary. ‘We have almost succeeded<br />

<strong>in</strong> elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g the unpredictable and tam<strong>in</strong>g the Holy Spirit.’<br />

We put on a brave face. People learned the ropes and were<br />

loyal. But there was unreality. Also some of the orig<strong>in</strong>als like<br />

Paddy, French Mary, and Alan had found the go<strong>in</strong>g tough.<br />

Paddy and his family had left the church, Mary had split off<br />

for a long while, and Alan and his family, though still loyal<br />

members of the church, had moved out of community.<br />

The church had moved deeper s<strong>in</strong>ce the early days but somehow<br />

we had ‘matured’ out of praise, and the <strong>in</strong>nocence of<br />

first love was tarnished with self-righteousness. We needed a<br />

touch of the div<strong>in</strong>e, the supernatural.<br />

Mike ‘Rockfast’ expressed his feel<strong>in</strong>gs as he wrote short<br />

stories about the ‘little people of K<strong>in</strong>gdomland’. The children<br />

at V<strong>in</strong>eyard loved them, but they carried a serious message.<br />

The tale of ‘The Great Dam’ was prophetic as the sudden turn<br />

of events amongst us was to prove.<br />

To start with it was just an idea.<br />

‘Why don’t we build a dam across Eternallife River? Then we<br />

can make it go wherever we want it to!’ They got to work with<br />

plans and diagrams. At one time you would have seen bands of<br />

merry little people s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and danc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g sunlight<br />

as they drank from the river and gathered fruit from the hedgerows.<br />

But now they were far too busy.<br />

Soon the dam was f<strong>in</strong>ished and they were proud of their work.<br />

Even visitors from S<strong>in</strong>fulgloom came to admire it. The little people<br />

settled down to cultivate their own plots, and were glad<br />

they didn’t have to dance to the river any more. So they all got<br />
