its manifestations of laughter, shak<strong>in</strong>g and fall<strong>in</strong>g, has been<br />

with us. Other strands of revival have been emerg<strong>in</strong>g. New<br />

fires are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to burn. Churches are stirr<strong>in</strong>g! The sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of souls, signs and wonders, and church-build<strong>in</strong>g revival<br />

mark these days. A <strong>Jesus</strong> movement, at grassroots level, is<br />

gather<strong>in</strong>g momentum.<br />

<strong>Fire</strong> <strong>in</strong> Our Hearts is the record of a grow<strong>in</strong>g community<br />

church which has seen the reviv<strong>in</strong>g activity of the Holy Spirit<br />

through the years. It is <strong>in</strong>tended to be honest and open. Christian<br />

biography and history is often triumphalistic. Our two<br />

authors determ<strong>in</strong>ed to ‘tell it as it is’ <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g struggles and<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>tments. I believe it is a balanced record.<br />

So you will read here of traumas and triumphs. Laughter<br />

and tears m<strong>in</strong>gle together. The baptism of power br<strong>in</strong>gs also<br />

the baptism of suffer<strong>in</strong>g. The call has ever been to sacrifice,<br />

to tread the way of the cross. The church cannot be built without<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>, pressure and persecution. The <strong>Jesus</strong> Fellowship/<strong>Jesus</strong><br />

<strong>Army</strong> has been shaped by the free grace of God and by<br />

the unwaver<strong>in</strong>g commitment, whatever the cost, of a large<br />

body of pioneers. It has been a learn<strong>in</strong>g experience and sadly<br />

some have got hurt as we pressed forward to capture the<br />

vision.<br />

In 1968 Michael Harper, then of the Founta<strong>in</strong> Trust, wrote<br />

a booklet called The Baptism of <strong>Fire</strong>. The charismatic movement<br />

was gather<strong>in</strong>g momentum. The <strong>Fire</strong> was spread<strong>in</strong>g. In<br />

that year, with a mixture of eagerness and trepidation, I read<br />

and heard of numerous people <strong>in</strong> non-Pentecostal churches<br />

receiv<strong>in</strong>g the baptism of the Spirit, speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> tongues and<br />

bubbl<strong>in</strong>g with holy joy. I learned that the lay<strong>in</strong>g on of hands<br />

brought power and heal<strong>in</strong>g to people. I heard of demons be-<br />
