AWAKE O ZION!<br />

‘Consider how <strong>Jesus</strong> lived for his Father’s will. How completely<br />

wholesome he was — how he rejected the treadmill of<br />

his age. <strong>Jesus</strong> created a new society!<br />

‘Now a last word from <strong>our</strong> bishop friend before we go to<br />

lunch.’ (The gong had gone ages ago.) ‘“We must live by the<br />

div<strong>in</strong>e contrar<strong>in</strong>ess of <strong>Jesus</strong>... We need an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ority<br />

that will call the bluff of the trendsetters”. 39<br />

‘Brethren, we move <strong>in</strong>to holy abnormality. We rediscover<br />

the joy of liv<strong>in</strong>g. You see, so many people are sick of what<br />

they are <strong>in</strong>to. Prick the surface and you will f<strong>in</strong>d a desperate<br />

sense of unfulfilment. “Our need,” says John Taylor, “is for<br />

men and women who are free with the freedom of Christ,<br />

free to come up with the answers no one has dared to give.” 40<br />

‘God is sett<strong>in</strong>g us free. Free as a people. Free to be what<br />

we long to be. Christ’s k<strong>in</strong>gdom is the answer. A people<br />

cleansed by his blood! A people of one heart! Beloved, this is<br />

the city of light and truth. This is the new creation — this<br />

great harmony with God, this harmony with angels and with<br />

creation, this brotherly love, this beauty, this creativity — this<br />

Zion!<br />

‘Let’s stand,’ said Noel as he raised his hands <strong>in</strong> the air,<br />

beamed contentedly and looked heavenward. Together we<br />

praised God. The vision of Zion had been set ablaze <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />

<strong>hearts</strong>. For many of us it seemed everyth<strong>in</strong>g we had desired.<br />

We were com<strong>in</strong>g home — to Zion.<br />

In Bugbrooke, the chapel was changed to allow an overflow<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the side room and upper lounge. A few left us after the<br />

challenge of Ashburnham, yet the vision of Zion was draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people. One of the Ashburnham groundsmen returned with<br />
