Mud, Sweat and Tears<br />

1974<br />

Rodger laughed so much, he fell on his back! He hadn’t always<br />

been so liberated, but that spr<strong>in</strong>g even<strong>in</strong>g he, Pete, and<br />

I had come home <strong>in</strong>ebriated — spiritually. It did us good. We<br />

needed loosen<strong>in</strong>g up. I was <strong>in</strong>to prayer and fast<strong>in</strong>g, Rodger<br />

was <strong>in</strong>to logical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, and Pete, a guitar teacher, was <strong>in</strong>to<br />

sleep and cream buns! They called us the three stooges: two<br />

Oxford graduates and an amateur philosopher. I now worked<br />

as a school technician and we all shared a flat <strong>in</strong> Northampton.<br />

Like us, more and more were com<strong>in</strong>g together <strong>in</strong> some k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of community. Couples opened their homes to s<strong>in</strong>gles and<br />

some, like Val, moved <strong>in</strong>to the village. Community was now<br />

the emphasis. Evangelism took second place but newcomers<br />

kept appear<strong>in</strong>g. We concentrated on be<strong>in</strong>g a people for God<br />

and this caught the public eye. ‘Follow<strong>in</strong>g The Instructions<br />
