Fall in the City
I look up in the sky
Hoping for just reds and yellows
But my hopes are too high,
I’m disappointed, my fellows
Leaves and paper bags,
Are decorating the trees
They’re caught in the wind
I breathe in the air
Hoping it’s crisp
As the child next to me
Coughs and sniffs
Reaching in his pocket,
He pulls out a device
Our children: poisoned
They used to just get lice
Catching debris
I look to those children
I look to the ground
Wanting to crunch
Those leaves under my feet:
A sound I love so much
But leaves lay in the grass
Next to wrappers from food
And I sadly look onward
And see such a glimmer
There’s hope in them,
When it used to just get dimmer
Our bodies, our earths
They’re all here together
So let’s protect our mother
With the changing weather
Trying to lighten my mood
Pick up our litter
I look to the water
At the great river bank
It’s murky, it’s muddy
It’s bleak, it’s dank
Unmentionables float
And catch on driftwood
Floating away
And help make a start
Hurry up with the cause
Instead of being a fart
The grays and blacks
Won’t simply disappear
Gather friends and help
So we don’t live in fear
But not where it should
