Barbie Burfoot<br />
Barbie Burfoot has been employed <strong>in</strong> the correctional field for 20 years. She was employed as an Adult Probation and Parole Officer<br />
<strong>in</strong> Richmond for 16 years before accept<strong>in</strong>g her current position as the Sentenc<strong>in</strong>g Advocate <strong>in</strong> the Richmond Public Defender’s<br />
Office. As a Sentenc<strong>in</strong>g Advocate, Ms. Burfoot participates on the <strong>Juvenile</strong> Drug Court Team, prepares mitigation packets for Circuit<br />
Court and assists the attorneys on daily tasks. She has been actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> Richmond’s <strong>Juvenile</strong> Detention Alternatives Initiative<br />
(<strong>JDAI</strong>) and co-chairs the weekly Detention Review Committee. By review<strong>in</strong>g the case of each deta<strong>in</strong>ed youth, the committee’s goal is to<br />
ensure that only those juveniles who pose a threat to public safety are placed <strong>in</strong> secure detention, that cases “step down” to less secure<br />
options when appropriate, and that all cases move expeditiously through the system, reduc<strong>in</strong>g unnecessary delays. Ms. Burfoot earned<br />
a Bachelor of Science degree <strong>in</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istration of Crim<strong>in</strong>al <strong>Justice</strong> from Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Commonwealth University. She has been active <strong>in</strong><br />
many community organizations <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g PTA, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.<br />

Jeanette DuVal, LCSW<br />
Jeanette DuVal has served as the Director of <strong>Juvenile</strong> Competency Services for the Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Department of Mental Health, Mental<br />
Retardation and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS), s<strong>in</strong>ce 1999. From 1996 to 2000, she provided statewide leadership <strong>in</strong><br />
the development, operation and oversight of Virg<strong>in</strong>ia’s forensic mental health system. Prior to her work <strong>in</strong> forensic services, Ms. DuVal<br />
provided mental health services to children and adolescents on both the local level and the state level. Ms. DuVal earned her masters<br />
degree <strong>in</strong> social work from Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Commonwealth University and is licensed to practice as a Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Social Worker.<br />

Sandi Heuisler<br />
Sandi Heuisler is a Consumer Advocate for the National Center for Trauma-Informed Care. Ms. Heuisler has spoken nationally on<br />
trauma, <strong>in</strong>carceration, and recovery and is featured <strong>in</strong> the documentary: “Beh<strong>in</strong>d Closed Doors: Trauma Survivors and the Psychiatric<br />
System”. The National Center for Trauma-Informed Care is part of the Center for Mental Health Services, under the U.S. Department<br />
of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />
