St. Vincent’s HealthCare Honored at
7th Annual “Hands of Hope” Event
Recognized for 11 Years of Ministry in Haiti
On March 5, 2011, the St. Boniface
Haiti Foundation held its 7th annual
“Hands of Hope” event to raise money
for the mission work of the foundation
in Fond des Blancs, a rural area in
Haiti. The foundation provides healthcare
services, educational programs and
community development to the community
of over 75,000 residents.
St. Vincent’s HealthCare was the recipient
of this year’s “Hands of Hope”
award. It was presented by Dr. Ron
Carzoli and accepted on behalf of St.
Vincent’s by Moody Chisholm, CEO.
For the past 11 years, St. Vincent’s has
partnered with the St. Boniface
Foundation to run the surgical
programs in Fond-des-Blancs. Each
year, ten general and gynecological
surgical teams perform more than 200
surgeries. The program was started in
2000 by Sandy Logue, who continues
to run the surgical program and in
whose honor the “Centre de Chirgurie”
was named this year at St. Boniface.
In presenting the award, Dr. Carzoli
thanked the numerous physicians,
nurses and support staff who have
helped make the program a success.
over the years. The clinic is now a 60
bed full-service hospital, providing care
to the previously severely underserved
rural population.
The St. Boniface mission expanded to
Jacksonville 15 years ago, when Jack
Logue, then St. Vincent’s COO began
working at St. Vincent’s Medical
Center. Today, Logue is the Chairman
of the Board for St. Boniface and leads
the Spirituality Center at St. Vincent’s.
SLH Clinical Engineering Tech
Provides Training to Haitians
By Kathie Ford
Marketing and Communications
Melissa Hendricks may be busy as a
Senior Technician at St. Luke’s Clinical
Engineering Department but she has
found time to make two trips to Haiti
with the TriMedx Foundation’s
Mission Lifecycle Program. The
program is designed to establish
clinical engineering departments in each
Haitian hospital to minimize downtime
of crucial equipment. While in Haiti,
she also provided hands on training to
the Haitian interns and helped create
the core curriculum.
“TriMedx* is committed to sending
one seasoned tech to Haiti each month
for the next two years,” Melissa says.
“We will provide instruction on as
many facets of clinical engineering as
possible.”
Hendricks comments that medical
equipment is in short supply and
getting functional equipment there is
a daunting task. “It is exceptionally
important hospitals have access to their
own technicians,” she says, “who can
perform basic troubleshooting and
repair and can communicate with the
doctors and nurses to minimize downtime
of crucial medical devices.”
Melissa Hendricks, Senior Technician in St. Luke’s Clinical Engineering Department,
works with participants of the Biomed Internship Program in Haiti.
Melissa is passionate about serving the
“very proud and thankful people” of
Haiti. She says, “They endure poverty,
crime and lack of basic services and still
they remain full of grace and hope.”
She has been to St. Boniface Hospital
in Fond des Blancs, Haiti and looks
forward to returning in August to
evaluate the biomed interns’ progress.
“Melissa always goes above and beyond
in customer service at St. Luke’s
hospital, as well as in her commitment
to supporting charity missions,” says
St. Luke’s Clinical Engineering Manager
Charles Berberette. “Her selfless
dedication to helping the TriMedx
Foundation in Haiti will have a lasting
impact on the lives of countless patients
by providing skills necessary for the
hospital to be more self sufficient.”
Melissa was featured in the TriMedx
Foundation’s online newsletter and
was commended in a letter to TriMedx
management by Mission Project Manager
Merrill N. Brown. Brown says,
“Much of the success of the mission’s
trip to Haiti is attributed to Melissa.
She worked long hard hours going over
and above what was simply required,
never losing her sweet spirit.” He adds,
“Her expertise and direction is a
perfect fit for this program.”
Thank you, Melissa, for exemplifying
St. Vincent’s Mission as you serve
others at home and abroad!
Honoring the Role of Cancer Registrars
in Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Research Programs
Cancer registrars observed the 15th
annual National Cancer Registrars
Week, April 11-15, with the theme
Cancer Registrars Pave the Way to a
Cure.
Cancer registrars are data information
specialists who collect and code
patient-level data for cancer registries.
The registries provide essential information
to healthcare providers to better
monitor and improve cancer treatment,
research, prevention and screening.
“Quality cancer data is central to the
nation’s fight against cancer and cancer
registrars are the first link in capturing
that data. National Cancer Registrars
Week provides an opportunity to
acknowledge the central role registrars
play in the research, treatment and
prevention of cancer,” noted NCRA
president Susan M. Koering, MEd,
RHIA, CTR.
“I would like to acknowledge
St. Vincent’s Registry Staff for their
dedication to capturing accurate,
St. Vincent’s Cancer Registrars are (L-R): Barbara Anderson, Barbara Dearmon,
Eva Caraway, and Sharon Rolle.
quality and timely cancer data. Our
department has excelled in meeting all
cancer incidence reporting requirements
by the Florida Cancer Data Systems in
a timely fashion and has received the
Jean Byers Memorial Award from the
State for excellence in cancer registration
three years in a row,” said Barbara
Dearmon, BS, CTR, manager of
Oncology Data Services. “Cancer
Registrars are vital to healthcare
organizations which positively affect
cancer patient care and the
community we serve.”
SVHC hosted its third successful Ladies Night Out
at the St. John’s Town Center April 14. The focus
this time was health and wellness. Olympic gymnast
Shannon Miller joined us again as the emcee. Shannon,
who was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer, is a
health and wellness advocate. She encourages fitness
among all ages through her weekly Shannon Miller
Lifestyle radio show (underwritten by St. Vincent’s
HealthCare) and her new Walk-Fit program.
Throughout the evening, participants were treated to
healthy cooking demonstrations from area chefs. Chef
Kenny Gilbert, from Bravo TV’s hit show Top Chef
delighted the audience as he prepared a vegetarian dish
for them to sample. Chef Gilbert just opened his first
restaurant, Nippers Beach Grille in Jacksonville Beach.
Participants also enjoyed heart healthy menu items
from Maggiano’s, Cantina Laredo and Ted’s Montana
Grill.
One of our weight loss models
shows off a pair of pants she
wore prior to her weight loss.
The event also included fashion shows…this time with
weight loss surgery patients, their doctors and nurses.
Proud men and women walked the stage as the stories
of their weight loss struggle and successes were shared
with the audience. One woman, who now sports a size
2, brought her old pants with her to show her dramatic
weight loss. The 20 patients who took part in the
fashion show have lost more than 2,300 pounds!
Our wonderful nurses volunteered their time to
provide free blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol
screenings to participants and St. Vincent’s Primary
Care doctors were there to answer questions. The
YMCA joined us again, getting people off their feet
during live exercise demonstrations. Kids joined the
fun too with free face painting and a bounce house.
Chef Kenny Gilbert prepared food from his Jacksonville Beach
restaurant, Nippers Beach Grille. Olympic gymnast, Shannon
Miller, emceed.
A big thank you goes to the many SVHC associates,
families, friends, physicians and patients who donated
their time and energy to making this another successful
Outstanding Care Delivered
by Associates of The Family
Birth Place at St. Luke’s
My wife gave birth to our daughter
Alice at St. Luke’s on April 13th in the
Family Birth Place. We just wanted to
thank everyone for helping us have a
great experience. Everyone was very
friendly and great at their job. This
was our 3rd child, and St. Luke’s was
by far the best experience we’ve had
in comparison to the two previous
hospitals we’ve been at. In particular,
we really liked Kim Shogren who was
the nurse during the actual delivery. She
was awesome. Can’t remember details
very well at this point but we were really
impressed with her and felt lucky
to have her help during the delivery.
She’s the type that could handle a lot
of responsibility. We also really liked
Laurie, our nurse for days two and
three. She had an awesome attitude and
was really friendly. Another gem. Also,
Janelle, I think she is a patient care
technician – she helped my wife with
a few different things and wheeled us
to our car as we left. She couldn’t have
been more thoughtful. My wife really
appreciated the care we got at
St. Luke’s. All the docs, nurses, techs
and support staff were great. My wife
and I are both docs ourselves and have
spent a good amount of time in hospitals
and really appreciate the good
attitude we found at St. Luke’s.
Sincerely,
To all who have donated to
the Food Pantry:
I have had the opportunity to thank
some of you individually. Some have
left food with Mike for the food
pantry. Some have donated in your
departments. Others have planted
gardens so fresh vegetables would be
available. No matter how the food
was delivered, know that it is truly
appreciated by the families. Our
numbers have increased and your
donations have also increased.
Thank you for your participation in
this ministry.
Compensation & Benefits
Did you know there is a pension benefit
in addition to the Matched Savings
Plan provided by St. Vincent’s and
Ascension Health? All associates,
whether full time, part time or PRN are
eligible.
If you were hired prior to January 1,
2005, you are in the Ascension Health/
St. Vincent’s Pension Plan. Associates
are vested in this plan after working 5
years and 1000+ hours in each of those
years. You can receive your benefit as
early as age 55 if you are vested and
have terminated your employment from
St. Vincent’s. Want to know the value
of your pension benefit? Ascension
Health has an easy to use website that
allows active associates to
learn about their pension
benefit and see what is
available. That website is
www.financialpathway.org.
If you were hired on or after
January 1, 2005, you are in
the Ascension Health/
St. Vincent’s Employer
Automatic Contribution
(EAC) Plan. This pension
plan provides an annual
contribution based on years of service
and has the same vesting requirements
as the Pension Plan. The annual contribution
is deposited into your account
with Diversified Investment Advisors
(DIA).
For assistance on how to access the
above website, go to the Intranet/Benefits/2011
Plan Information and scroll
down to the box on the bottom left.
There are two fliers. One is for the
Pension Plan and accessing the
Financial Pathways website and
the other is for the new Employer
Automatic Contribution Plan. You
can call our DIA reps, Jill Kelley or
Greg Lewis at 308-7780 for
information on the EAC Plan.
Jessica Dolan
is a Frequent Spirit Card Recipient
By Kathie Ford
Marketing and Communications
Jessica Dolan
Spirit Card recipients are recognized in each Mediscoop
issue and there are some associates whose names appear
time and again. Readers might wonder, ‘Why?’ does this
associate receive so much recognition? This feature article
will help you understand the answer. This issue turns the
spotlight on Jessica Dolan, a discharge planner in Social
Services at St. Catherine Labouré Manor. Jessica has
received Spirit Cards three out of the last four months.
SCLM Assistant Administrator Teresa Butts says,
“Jessica is sensitive to the individual needs of the residents
and family members she serves. She utilizes their strengths
to form a discharge plan that is safe, meets their needs
and encourages ongoing independence. She is respectful
of their wishes and engages them in the decision making
process which leads to patient empowerment.”
Initially, Jessica thought she was headed into a different
field of medicine but after hearing speeches on other
disciplines as an undergraduate, she began to consider the
field of social work. “This field matches my desire to help
people,” said Jessica.
As a discharge planner, Jessica works with the short term
rehab population, primarily orthopedic patients. “Just
smiling and greeting patients helps them feel welcome,”
Jessica said. “I truly enjoy making a difference.”
“We have a great interdisciplinary team that includes
Nursing, Therapy, Dietary, Activities and Social Work,”
said Jessica whose co-workers think she’s pretty special
too. They recognize her frequently with Spirit Cards!
Thank you, Jessica, for sharing your kind spirit with your
patients and co-workers – you DO make a difference in
their lives.
