The Charles E. and Dianne T. Rice Family Foundation Donates
Statue of St.Vincent with Child
By Kathie Ford
Marketing and Communications
Statue of St. Vincent and child in St. Vincent’s
Medical Center lobby.
Lonnie Young (Moyer Marble), Dan Rice and
Capt. Robert Rasmussen (Artist)
Visitors and associates watched in awe as a
beautiful statue of St. Vincent with a child
was installed in St. Vincent’s main lobby on
March 14. Our heartfelt thanks go to the
Charles E. and Dianne T. Rice family for this
inspirational gift.
The artist, Captain Robert Rasmussen,
Director of the National Aviation Museum
in Pensacola, FL, and a former Blue Angel,
was on site for the delivery and installation
of the statue. He is the creator of the Daughters
of Charity statues and the St. Vincent
statue that stands in the hallway leading from
Admitting to the ER.
Using the ancient “lost-wax” process,
Rasmussen spent eight months creating the
statue — his first ever of St. Vincent with a
child. Rasmussen’s artistry includes a personal
touch — the face of the child reflects the
face of his precious granddaughter.
St. Vincent’s Tony Esposito worked with
Moyer Marble to create the 800-pound base
for the statue. The base was built in two
pieces and four men were involved in moving
it from the truck to the lobby.
Dan Rice, the son of Charles and Dianne
Rice, along with Rasmussen and Lonnie
Young from Moyer’s Marble gathered with a
group of onlookers who gasped and whispered
as the 500-pound statue was maneuvered
out of the foundry truck that brought it
from Pensacola.
Atop its marble base, the statue stands more
than seven feet tall.
Director of Pastoral & Vincentian
Services
Father Gerald Clark retired effective
April 1, following nine years of dedicated
service to St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
A true servant leader, Fr. Clark shaped
the Spiritual Care in our health system
serving as interim Director of Pastoral
Care for several years. As Chaplain, he
graciously touched the lives of many
patients and associates over the years
and will be missed by all.
Associates stopped by to visit with Fr.
Clark and wish him farewell during
a reception held in his honor on
March 31. Fr. Gerald’s immediate plans
include a trip to Romania with his
daughter. He will continue his ministry
RANDY HARTLEY: Served Ministry with Integrity
By Moody Chisholm,
President and CEO
I am sad to report that Randy Hartley,
Vice President, Operations, Physician
Enterprises is leaving St. Vincent’s
HealthCare. Randy has been selected to
serve as the first Chief Administrative
Officer (CAO) for the new Nemours
Children’s Hospital currently under
construction in Orlando, Florida. This
$400M, 95-bed hospital and integrated
ambulatory clinic is scheduled to
open in the Summer of 2012 and will
be located in an area known as Lake
Nona Medical City.
Randy came to St Vincent’s in September
2005 following his retirement from
active duty in the US Air Force. He
initially served as Director in the Family
Medicine Center for a little under
two years where he worked with the
faculty, residents and associates to
expand and grow this important part
of our Ministry. In July 2007, he was
2 APRIL 2011
tapped to serve as Vice President,
Clinical Services, for the new St Luke’s
Hospital and was part of the team who
led the transition from Mayo Clinic in
April 2008. In September of 2008, we
asked Randy to serve as VP/Administrator
at St Luke’s. He provided
stability during this challenging time
and partnered with senior leaders to
more closely integrate the operations of
both St Luke’s and St Vincent’s.
Due to his background in physician
practice management and operations,
I asked Randy to transition to a newly
established position as the VP of Operations
for our Physician Enterprise.
In this role, he applied his talents to
our fast-growing St. Vincent’s Physician
Enterprise where he served with Carrie
Goodwin, SVP, to rapidly expand our
physician network while maintaining
operational integrity.
I thank Randy for the hard work and
impact he has had on our Ministry. I
consider him to be a man of incredibly
high integrity. When asked of his
thoughts about leaving, Randy stated:
“As I depart St Vincent’s, I do so with a
combination of excitement for this new
challenge of caring for children with
Nemours tinged with sadness for leaving
so many close friends. The SVHC
faith-based service to others stands as
a beacon of hope for our community,
state and nation. I will carry what I
have learned and shared here in my
heart always. I wish St Vincent’s and
Ascension Health much continued success
in the future. ”
JOYE STRICKLAND: Served Ministry with Dedication
By Sean M. Fitzpatrick, CPA, MBA
Vice President, Finance Operations
Joye Strickland, Vice President,
Finance/System Controller is leaving
St. Vincent’s HealthCare after 28 years
of dedicated service to our ministry.
Joye’s last day will be Friday, May 6.
She came to St. Vincent’s in January
1983 on a temporary assignment as the
Finance lead to plan and implement a
new general ledger system. Recently,
Joye has been serving as the Finance
lead on the Symphony project team
and, through her diligence and can-do
attitude, has done a great job helping
to keep us “green” with this important
initiative.
Joye’s integrity, professionalism and
dedication to excellence have greatly
influenced St. Vincent’s accounting,
financial reporting, accounts payable
and payroll functions. This is most
evident in the timeliness and quality of
the monthly closing process, quarterly
financial reporting requirements for
Ascension Health and year-end audits.
When I asked Joye to comment on her
legacy at St. Vincent’s, she was typically
humble: “I’ve come full circle. I
was hired to implement a new general
ledger system 28 years ago and am
leaving when a new general ledger
system implementation is in process.”
Joye added, “I’m thankful for the time
I’ve had with the St. Vincent’s Ministry.
I will miss those I’ve worked with
and I truly appreciate the support I’ve
received from all these many years.”
Please join me in thanking Joye for her
contributions to St. Vincent’s and wishing
her all the best in the years to come.
Beginning May 2, go to www.jaxhealth.com/survey
or Intranet homepage under Associate Services.
It is time again to find the answer to this important question:
Would you recommend our Health Ministry to your friends
and family as a great place to work?
Our ability to attract and retain skilled, caring and inspired associates —
and to ensure they are fully engaged in our organization’s work — is key
to achieving our Vision and fulfilling our Mission. We continue to strive to
ensure that all associates are engaged in a Model Community of Inspired
People — focused on our Mission, capable of reaching their full potential
and flourishing in a culture that supports them.
To measure associate engagement, for the last two years we have taken
a common survey across St. Vincent’s HealthCare. This allows us to work
more closely together to share ideas and best practices. After reviewing
survey results, you and your colleagues have been working together to
develop approaches to improve our culture and make us an employer of
choice in our community.
It is time once again to conduct the Associate Engagement Survey to see
how we’re doing. This is a vital opportunity to voice your feedback anonymously
on what is working well and areas for continued improvement. As
in the past, survey responses will be completely confidential; no one at
our Health Ministry or in Ascension Health will see any individual survey
responses. However, in workgroups where 10 or more associates respond to
the survey, written comments will be reported verbatim (but without names).
The survey results will be used by leaders working with their teams to
identify key areas for further improvement and develop specific plans of
action to address those areas. I encourage you to participate in the survey.
By providing your candid feedback, together we can create a community of
associates who are passionate about our work each day.
Take the survey and submit your entry form for one of
these great prizes:
St. Vincent’s HealthCare is preparing to
celebrate its third annual Certified Nurse’s Day.
It’s a special day of recognition to celebrate
the contributions of board certified nurses, the
advancement of nursing professionalism and
the higher standards and better outcomes in
patient health.
Certified Nurses Day is celebrated on March
19, the birthday of Margretta “Gretta” Madden
Nurses
Styles. Gretta Styles was a pioneer across
the globe in championing the value of nursing
certification in the 1970’s. Dr. Styles’ legacy has
brought awareness to the growing role of board
certification in contributing to high standards of
patient care.
Certified nurses have met rigorous requirements
to achieve this expert credential. Certified
Nurses Day is an opportunity to recognize
and encourage nurses to pursue this important
step in their careers. Specialty certification not
only fosters professional growth but promotes
career development and is formally recognized
through St. Vincent’s HealthCare’s Clinical
Practice Development Program (CPDP).
St. Vincent’s HealthCare applauds their certified
nurses for their knowledge, skills and experience
demonstrated by achieving certification
in a nursing specialty to promote optimal
outcomes for patients.
Occupational Therapy
in Acute Care and the Outpatient Setting
By Stephanie Bywater, MS, OTR/L and
Megan Schneider, MOT, OTR/L, CEAS
SVMC Rehab and Sports Medicine
When people become sick or inured
their ability to perform their occupations
may become limited. Occupational
therapists (OTs) help these patients
regain what illness and injury have
taken away.
If you have a question about whether
a patient is in need of skilled occupational
therapy services, feel free to ask
an OT or write for an OT consult. If
you feel like you are suffering from a
debilitating disease or condition and are
unable to complete your daily activities
and work duties, talk to your physician
about a possible OT evaluation on an
outpatient basis. It may be just what
you need to get your life back on track.
At SVMC, OTs work with medical,
surgical, neurological, and orthopedic
acute care patients and outpatients.
A specialty area of occupational or
physical therapy is Lymphedema
Therapy. St. Vincent’s currently has
two occupational therapists who are
Certified Lymphedema Therapists and
specialize in the treatment of individuals
with a disruption to their lymphatic
system. When the lymphatic system is
compromised, the human body has difficulty
getting rid of protein-rich fluid
that accumulates in the extracellular
space.
A specialty area often pursued by
outpatient occupational therapists is the
Certification in Hand Therapy (CHT).
One must practice in the area of hand
and upper extremity injuries for five
years in order to gain eligibility to sit
for the CHT exam. This certification
displays an expertise in the rehabilitation
of injuries pertaining to the upper
extremity.
National Day of Prayer
May 5
By Tracie Loftis
Director Pastoral Care and
Vincentian Services
The National Day of Prayer is a vital
part of our heritage. Since the first call
to prayer in 1775, when the Continental
Congress asked the colonies to pray
for wisdom in forming a nation, the
call to prayer has continued throughout
our history, including President Lincoln’s
proclamation of a day of “humiliation,
fasting, and prayer” in 1863.
In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress,
signed by President Truman, declared
an annual, national day of prayer. In
1988, the law was amended and signed
by President Reagan, permanently
setting the day as the first Thursday
of every May. Each year, the president
signs a proclamation, encouraging all
Americans to pray on this day. Last
year, all 50 state governors plus the
governors of several U.S. territories
signed similar proclamations.
Prayer is “communion with God.”
Through prayer we actually experience
a relationship with God. Prayer is
talking with God, listening to God and
enjoying the presence of God. It can
take many forms – for example: worship,
confession, thanksgiving, praise,
petition (asking for things), waiting
(silent, listening and sensing God) and
warfare (command).
The National Day of Prayer has great
significance for us as a nation. It enables
us to recall and to teach the way
in which our founding fathers sought
the wisdom of God when faced with
critical decisions. It stands as a call for
us to humbly come before God, seeking
His guidance for our leaders and His
grace upon us as a people.
Interesting Facts About the National
Day of Prayer
• There have been 136 national calls
to prayer, humiliation, fasting and
thanksgiving by the Presidents of
the United States (1789-2010).
• There have been 58 Presidential
Proclamations for a “National Day
of Prayer” (1952-2010).
• Every President since 1952 has
signed a National Day of Prayer
proclamation.
Service Excellence Legends
Once again, we are excited to share the stories of our Service Excellence Legends, associates within our Ministry that demonstrate their
commitment to the Mission and Core Values of St. Vincent’s HealthCare. Service Excellence Legends represent a diverse group of associates
from across our Ministry who proudly live the Mission and Core Values of St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
Service Excellence Legends
Service Excellence
Dr. Sonya Dominguez and Dr. John
Waidner from the Family Medicine
Center, helped a family when their child
suddenly passed away. Dr. Waidner
was treating a pediatric patient with
seizures when an older sibling suddenly
passed away from the same genetic
seizure disorder. The family had little
financial means to pay for a proper
burial and did not know where to turn.
Dr. Dominguez intervened and was
able to work through several contacts
and departments to connect the patient
with the St. Vincent’s Good Samaritan
fund. Dr. Waidner was instrumental in
supporting the family at this difficult
time and personally gave funds to help
with the child’s funeral expenses.
Cathy Boyd, Customer Service Representative,
and Jackie Knudsen, Phlebotomist,
at Consolidated Lab’s Mandarin,
office were going about their normal
routine when a car suddenly drove into
their waiting room. They were quick
to call for medical help and make sure
everyone was safe. Less than one week
later, Kim Wells and Ernestine White,
Customer Service Representatives at
Consolidated Lab’s Timuquana office
had a car suddenly drive into their
waiting room. They too, were quick to
help people in need and to secure the
building safely. Both accidents were
caused by drivers who mistakenly
pushed the gas instead of brake when
parking. Consolidated Lab’s leadership
said nothing like this has ever
happened and they pray it will never
happen again!
Wendy Holt, Nurse Navigator with
Cancer Services at St. Vincent’s Medical
Center, has received an overwhelming
number of compliments from patients,
families and SVHC Senior Leadership
that speak to her compassionate care
and dedication to St. Vincent’s Health-
Care. As a Nurse Navigator, Holt helps
patients and families who have been
newly diagnosed with cancer or are
currently receiving treatment for cancer.
She has been known to work long
hours, come in on her days off and
take phone calls from worried families
around the clock. One family said she
was like “an angel” while another family
said, “You have a treasure in Wendy
and we cannot thank you enough for
the service the Nurse Navigator provided.”
Her patience and compassion,
coupled with her extensive knowledge
of oncology, extends our Mission to the
patients of St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
Please help us in congratulating our
Service Excellence Legends of the
Month for sharing St. Vincent’s Health-
Be Informed
The Payroll Tax Cut: An Opportunity to
Sweeten Your Retirement Savings
By Jill Kelley
Diversified Investment Advisors
Did you know a new federal tax law
that went into effect January 1, 2011
put 2% more in most Americans
paychecks? The reason: a temporary
cut in the federal FICA (Social Security
and Medicare) tax on earnings up to
$106,800.
What should you do with this gift from
Uncle Sam? Here are three options, and
why we recommend the third:
• Spend it and help stimulate the
economy.
• Save it to shore up an emergency
fund or pay down high-rate debt.
• Invest it in your future by raising
your retirement plan contributions.
Why might this be your best choice?
Two reasons:
• First, how much you save is key
to building a nest egg that can last
as long as you do. Also, paying less
into Social Security today could
affect your federal benefits
tomorrow. So, by shifting tax
savings to retirement savings, you
could end up fixing a potential hole
in your own safety net.
• Second, it’s painless — a chance to
help fund your future without
noticing any decrease in pay. In fact,
if you boost pre-tax contributions
by 2%, you’ll still see more
take-home pay.
To increase your contribution rate, sign
in to your account at www.divinvest.
com, and click on Deferrals/Payroll Deduction
in the Transactions menu. You
can also contact Jill Kelley, our Diversified
On-Site Representative, at 308-
7780 or call 877-346-7284 and press 2
to speak to a Participant Counselor.
This information is general in nature
and should not be considered as investment
advice. Everyone’s situation is
unique, and you should consider your
risk tolerance, personal circumstances
and complete financial situation.
Spotlight on Wellness:
Weight Watchers as a Way
of Life
By Jennifer Jones, Health and
Wellness Coordinator
St. Vincent’s Healthcare has hosted
the Weight Watchers at Work
program for many years. Many
successfulassociates have learned
how to change their lifestyle by
maintaining a healthy weight and
being more active. Rhonda Bomhold
is one of those dedicated associates.
Rhonda has maintained a weight
loss of over 70 pounds since starting
Weight Watchers in February 2007!
Rhonda stated “I have learned that
it’s not a diet but a lifestyle change.
I feel so much better physically and
mentally due to the success I have
had with the program.” Rhonda
explained that Weight Watchers
taught her how to eat well but still
enjoy the foods she likes. One goal
Rhonda has accomplished since
going through this lifestyle change is
completing her first half marathon.
Rhonda hopes to complete her first
full marathon in the near future.
Weight
Watchers
introduced
a new
Points Plus
program
this year.
It’s tailored
to meet
your needs
based on a
variety of
factors and
Rhonda Bomhold
allows you to
control the
foods you eat. During the meetings
the group leader offers advice
related to eating in restaurants,
tracking foods and preparing new
recipes. Meetings are held at
St. Vincent’s Medical Center
on Thursdays from Noon to
12:45 p.m. in room 118 of Seton
Hall. These meetings are open to
associates and visitors. If you are
Hospital Pays $1M to Settle
HIPAA Violation
Bill Mayher, Vice President
Corporate Compliance
In a recent settlement, Mass General
Hospital (MGH) agreed to pay a $1
million fine for violating the HIPAA
Privacy Rule. The settlement involved
the loss of protected health information
(PHI) for 192 patients treated by the
hospital.
The loss came after an MGH employee
took home patient encounter forms and
other documents which contained PHI
for the 192 patients. While riding the
subway into work, the employee placed
the files on the seat next to her and left
them when she exited the subway. The
files have not been recovered.
As required by law, MGH notified the
affected patients of the lost records.
Several are now suing MGH.
When the Health Information Technology
for Economic and Clinical Health
(HITECH) Act was implemented in
2009, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR)
warned there would be increased
enforcement and penalties. The OCR
enforces the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
“We hope the healthcare industry will
take a close look at this settlement and
recognize that OCR is serious about
HIPAA enforcement,” said OCR Director
Georgina Verdugo.
Here are some things you can do to
safeguard patients’ protected health
information:
• Make sure charts or documents
containing PHI are secured and not
left unattended.
• Discard documents with PHI by
shredding or placing them in a secure
confidential recycle bin.
• Only use encrypted thumb drives
to store protected health information
when transferring the information
from one device to another.
• If you use a laptop for work, check
with your supervisor to ensure it is
encrypted.
• Original documents containing PHI
should not be removed from the
facility without your supervisor’s
approval.
If you have questions, would like additional
information or need to report a
concern, please contact Bill Mayher at
308-3941. If you wish to remain anonymous,
you may report the concern by
calling the Values Line at 1-800-707-
2198 or visiting www.AscensionHealth-
ValuesLine.org. Both are available 24
hours a day, 7 days a week.
Get to Know the St. Vincent’s
Cystic Fibrosis
Care Team
By Paula Naugle,
Performance Improvement
and
Cissy Shanks, Nurse Manager,
5300/5100/5200/Wound Care
St. Vincent’s Medical Center is the hospital
of choice for area physicians who
treat adult patients with Cystic Fibrosis
(CF). In the 1950s, CF was considered
a childhood disease because few
children with CF lived long enough to
attend elementary school. There is no
cure for CF but with specific medical
care, proper nutrition, drug treatments
and therapies to improve oxygenation,
CF patients can enjoy an improved
quality of life, with a current life
expectancy of 35 years.
CF is a genetic disease that primarily
affects the respiratory and digestive
systems, requiring nutritional support
and breathing treatments. Patients are
often under the care of pulmonologists,
since losing the ability to get oxygen to
the lungs is a prominent symptom of
this disease.
In Jacksonville, pediatric CF patients
are treated in pediatric hospitals and
adult CF patients are under the care
of pulmonary physicians, with much
of the adult care being provided in
physician offices. When hospitalization
is needed, pulmonologists admit their
adult CF patients to the 5 East pulmonary
unit at SVMC, where the staff is
dedicated to the newly emerging field of
caring for adult CF patients. Several of
the nurses routinely attend conferences
and research best practices in order to
provide the latest in nursing care.
The
Spotlight
Patty Thacker
is a Frequent Spirit
Card Recipient
By Kathie Ford
Marketing and Communications
Spirit Card recipients are recognized in each
Mediscoop issue and there are some associates
whose names appear time and again.
Readers might wonder, ‘Why?’ does this
associate receive so much recognition? This
feature article will help you know the answer.
This issue turns the spotlight on Patty
Thacker, a registered nurse on 3 East Oncology.
Patty has received eleven Spirit Cards
within the last six months.
Patty Thacker already had 25 years experience
as a lab tech and five years experience
working with preschoolers before she made
the decision to go into nursing. She came
to St. Vincent’s three years ago to develop
expertise that would eventually allow her to
work with Hospice. On 3 East Oncology,
she often finds herself preparing patients for
end-of-life care.
“This is my first nursing job and when I
came here, I knew nothing,” Patty says. “Everyone
– nurses, techs, ACPs, food personnel,
housekeepers – I mean everyone helped
me. I could not have made it without their
patience and support,” she emphasizes. “We
are supportive of one another and genuinely
care for our patients!” Thacker insists, “I
Patty Thacker, RN, and Danene Lynch, ANM, stand
in front of the recognition board on 3 East Oncology
that is jam-packed with Spirit Cards. Patty insists that
everyone she works with deserves special recognition!
don’t do anything my co-workers don’t do –
they all deserve special recognition!”
“Patty is a wonderful and compassionate
nurse who takes pride in what she does. She
treats her patients as if they were part of
her family,” says Assistant Nurse Manager
Danene Lynch. “I am proud to work beside
such a wonderful woman and all the staff on
3 East.”
Thacker says her personal experience caring
for her dying mother has enriched her life as
a nurse. “My mother was very proud of me
and I do this in her honor.” She adds, “as my
mother was dying, I experienced what it’s
like to be a patient’s family member, and the
importance of caring for the families too.”
Now, as she cares for patients and families,
she shares her story to comfort them. “It’s
easy for people to feel they are alone in their
suffering. It’s important they know I am
there for them.”
“Patients teach me, too,” says Thacker. She
recalls one very ill patient who told her “I’m
too blessed to be stressed.”
Thacker seems to glow as she exclaims, “I
am doing exactly what I love!” Her multiple
Spirit Cards make it very clear that her patients
and co-workers know that to be true.
