St. Vincent’s Medical Center and
St. Luke’s Hospital Receive Joint Commission
Advanced Certification for
Heart Failure Care
St. Vincent’s HealthCare (SVHC) is
proud to be home to the only two
hospitals in Northeast Florida to
receive Advanced Certification from
the Joint Commission for heart failure
care. Both St. Vincent’s Medical Center
in Riverside and St. Luke’s Hospital
on the Southside received the elite
designation in December 2010.
The honor has only been given to two
other hospitals in Florida and just 21
other hospitals in the entire nation.
The distinction given by the Joint
Commission is considered the Gold
Seal of Approval for health care quality.
For patients it means they will
receive some of the very best heart
failure care in the nation when they
are treated at either St. Luke’s Hospital
or St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
“St. Vincent’s HealthCare has
long been a leader in cardiac care.
Through the years our affiliated physicians
have pioneered procedures like
open heart surgery that are now common
place around the globe. Now, we
are being recognized for introducing
this same cutting-edge creativity into
improving the treatment and on-going
management of heart failure. This distinction
further illustrates our
commitment to providing the citizens
of Northeast Florida the very
best cardiac care available,” said
Moody Chisholm, CEO of
St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
According to the American Heart
Association, about 5.7
million people
suffer from
heart failure.
Statistics show
more than
292,200
people die
from heart
failure each
year.
The Joint
Commission
has recognized
high performing programs through
disease-specific certification since
2002. For more information,
Getting to Know Our Leadership
Cafeteria
DI$COUNTS
By Moody Chisholm
President and CEO SVHC
At the last town hall meeting and
often in the halls, associates have
asked me if we can establish a
“discount” for associates in the
cafeteria. I have always provided a
discount for associates at other hospitals,
so I set out to move forward
with one here. Unfortunately, the IRS
has recently changed their perspective
on this. We are now required
to tax our associates for the value
of any discount we provide in the
cafeteria. This is one of the most
absurd IRS rules I have ever heard of
and it makes the idea of providing a
discount unrealistic.
In the absence of a discount, I will
commit to our associates that we will
hold our prices down and look for
opportunities to provide “specials”
that provide a low price on a featured
item. This will effectively be a
discount and provide a low price to
everyone.
Gift Shops Offer
Appreciation
Gift Shop Manager
It is time once again to say “thank
you” to our customers. During the
month of February get 10% off most
Q&A with
Bill Mayher
Mediscoop offers an opportunity for
readers to meet different leaders from
across our healthcare system. In this
issue, Bill Mayher tells about himself.
Q. What is your position and what are
your primary responsibilities?
A. I serve as the Vice President
Corporate Compliance and Chief
Privacy Officer for all companies
in the health system. I am
responsible for ensuring
St. Vincent’s HealthCare maintains
an effective system-wide compliance
program that promotes prevention,
detection and resolution of
instances of conduct that may not
conform to Federal and State law
and/or St. Vincent’s policy. I also
work to ensure our patients’
privacy rights are protected.
Q. How long have you been with
SVHC?
A. I have worked in various
positions with SVHC since 1996.
Initially I served as a Financial
Analyst in the Reimbursement
Department, then as Manager of
Budget and Financial Planning. I
have served as Corporate
Compliance Officer and Privacy
Officer since 2003.
Q. What do you like best about your
position?
A. My work involves solving complex
and challenging situations which
I find rewarding. I have the
privilege of working with very
talented people who care deeply
about what they do. My late
grandfather, my father and my
brother were/are physicians so
healthcare has always been a big
part of my life. I realized early on
that I didn’t have the stomach for
that work but I’m very fortunate to
be able to use my skills to support
our great health ministry at
St. Vincent’s.
Q. What activities do you enjoy in
your free time?
A. I have served as an adjunct
instructor for Webster University
since 2005. I teach accounting
theory in the MBA program and
healthcare strategy in the MHA
program. I really enjoy the
interaction with the students and it
helps me stay current. I play in
United States Tennis Association
(USTA) tennis leagues. The leagues
help feed my competitive spirit
and provide a great workout. I
enjoy spending time with my wife
and two daughters... they keep me
pretty busy. I also enjoy attending
football games in Athens, Go
Dawgs!
Q. Do you have one “nugget of
wisdom” you’d like to share with
our readers?
A. There are two things my Father
told me over and over again when
I was growing up: “Success comes
before work only in the dictionary”
and “always do the right thing.”
Those two nuggets have served
me well.
Diagnostic Cardiology Joins SVHC
By Moody Chisholm
CEO, St. Vincent’s HealthCare
We are pleased to announce all of the
physicians, nurse practitioners and support
staff from Diagnostic Cardiology
Associates (DCA) are now officially
part of St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
The two organizations have worked
together for years to provide top notch
cardiovascular care to patients but now
DCA is officially a member of the
St. Vincent’s family and we are proud
to call them our associates.
This new relationship became official
January 1, 2011.
Diagnostic Cardiology Associates
has played a large role in helping
St. Vincent’s develop its reputation as
a cardiology leader. The program here
has been recognized by U.S.News &
World Report three times as one of
America’s best heart hospitals. In 2008,
it was named by Thomson Reuters as
one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals
for cardiovascular care.
That tradition of excellence continues
today. Through our partnership, we
developed heart failure protocol at
both St. Vincent’s Medical Center and
St. Luke’s that was just recognized
by the Joint Commission with their
prestigious Gold Seal of Approval. The
recognition has only been bestowed on
21 other hospitals in the entire United
States which means our patients receive
some of the very best cardiology care in
the nation!
We are confident this strengthened
relationship between our organizations
will improve our ability to offer
patients the highest quality of care.
Please join me in welcoming all the
physicians and associates from DCA to
our St. Vincent’s family.
Ascension Health’s Initiative Leads to Major Changes
Ascension’s Symphony project has been
mentioned in town meetings, Mediscoop
and emails but unless you work
in Human Resources, Finance or the
Supply Chain, you still might wonder
“What is Symphony and what changes
will it bring?”
Symphony will overhaul and centralize
operations at many levels in an effort
to operate our healthcare ministry
more efficiently so we can carry on our
Mission of providing the highest quality
care to all, with special attention to
those who are poor and vulnerable.
Through Symphony, Ascension Health
and its Health Ministries are making
major changes in how we operate,
including standardizing some processes
and introducing new processes in three
broad areas: Finance, Human Resources
and Supply Chain.
The changes, which will be introduced
across Ascension Health from 2011
through 2015, will include the
following:
• Several functions in Finance,
Human Resources and Supply Chain
will move to a new Ascension Health
Ministry Service Center that will
be based in Indianapolis, IN. It will
employ about 500 associates. Moving
functions like accounts payable, payroll
processing and benefits administration
to a centralized Ministry Service Center
will reduce our costs and allow us to
devote more resources to our mission
and service to our communities.
• New, more modern computer
systems to serve our Finance, Human
Resources and Supply Chain areas will
replace outdated ones. Along with these
new systems, we will also introduce
new processes for how our associates
will work in these areas.
• Our new Finance, Human Resources
and Supply Chain processes
and computer systems will provide our
ministry with more timely, complete information
to help us make better decisions
and do our work more efficiently.
“Symphony will deliver capabilities
that will make us a more connected
ministry and provide us with empowering
knowledge,” said Ann Esposito, Ascension
Health’s Senior Vice President
and Program Executive for Symphony.
“The effort will support our Mission
and Ascension Health’s 2020 Vision
to be a strong, vibrant Catholic health
ministry that will lead the transformation
of healthcare.”
“Standardizing processes throughout
Ascension Health ministries,” says
EVP/System COO Gene Miyamoto,
“will improve efficiency and help all
of us better face future healthcare
challenges.”
St. Vincent’s HealthCare has been
actively involved in the design phase of
Symphony, with SVHC associates listed
below serving in leadership and subject
matter expert roles.
Sacred Heart in Pensacola is in our
Gulf Coast/North Florida Region and
will serve as the alpha site for Symphony,
meaning they will be the first
ministry to deploy and experience these
new processes. Sacred Heart Health
System will deploy Symphony in July
2011. The Ministry Service Center
in Indianapolis will be prepared and
staffed first to be ready to assist them.
Another member of our region, Providence
in Mobile, Alabama will be one
of two beta sites, deploying second in
January 2012. St. Thomas in Nashville
is the other beta site.
All Ascension Health ministries will
deploy Symphony sometime between
July 2012 and 2015, but specific deployment
dates are not known beyond
those for the alpha and beta sites.
“Although we do not know when
Symphony will deploy in Jacksonville,”
says Jan Lipsky, System VP of HR and
Organizational Development, “it is
never too soon to begin working with
our valued associates directly affected
by Symphony. We met with associates
from HR, Finance and Supply Chain in
January to begin the transition. We will
work closely with them as they consider
their career options and possible
interests in furthering their education
through LEAP, our tuition assistance
program, workshops and other
opportunities. Our goal is
to help them navigate through
change and we are fortunate
to have time to do that.”
While Symphony directly
impacts associates serving
in HR, Finance and Supply
Chain, it will impact all
associates and the way we
work. Everyone will receive
training before we deploy.
Unique Gingerbread Crib Delivers
“Safe Sleep for Infants” Message
By Toni Herndon, RN, MS, IBCLC/
Coordinator
Seton Center for Women and
Infants’ Health
The Rotary and Jacksonville Historical
Society provided a beautiful gingerbread
display in St. Vincent’s maternity area
during the holidays. This year, the Rotary
has targeted Safe Sleep for Infants
as one of their causes. Carol Brady,
Director of Healthy Start, constructed
a gingerbread crib with the Safe Sleep
message. It was part of a display at the
Rotary Club’s Gingerbread
Extravaganza and silent auction
and was on display at the Historical
Society.
The gingerbread crib measured 24”
by 24” at the base and 18” tall. It was
offered to St. Vincent’s because Seton
Center has done promotions over the
years advocating Safe Sleep for infants.
SVHC Provides FREE Angioscreening Services
Available at No Charge to Associates for a Limited Time
By Chris Veal
Cardiovascular Service Line Director
St. Vincent’s HealthCare has a new
mobile health unit dedicated to cardiovascular
care. AngioScreen is a simple,
non-invasive vascular screening designed
to provide patients with information
about their circulation and risk
of heart disease and stroke. A newly
hired mobile team will take the screenings
to local businesses and events in
St. Vincent’s dedicated AngioScreen
mobile.
AngioScreen uses non-invasive ultrasound
technology to scan the arteries
in the neck. It offers patients a clear
picture of their vascular health. Vascular
disease is the leading cause of death
worldwide as well as the leading cause
of stroke and heart attack. We believe
this screening tool will save lives.
Our AngioScreen team
includes a sonographer
and two medical assistants.
Patients will receive a
comprehensive report that
includes actual pictures of
their arteries to share with
their physician.
Be Informed
Be Informed About
Your Benefits
By Tammy Lota
Human Resources
If you currently receive additional
income that is equal to or greater than
50% of your base salary at St. Vincent’s
HealthCare you may be wasting
dollars if you have signed up for short
term or long term disability insurance.
Additional income includes disability
(except military), retirement, pension
(except military) or Social Security benefits.
You could be paying for insurance
that might have a $0 payout because of
your additional income. If you are not
eligible to receive the St. Vincent’s short
term or long term disability due to your
additional income but signed up for the
coverage for 2011, check today with
the Benefits department to determine if
you are eligible to drop your coverage
in these plans. Call the Benefits staff at
Assessing Your Health
Retirement Savings Plan
By Jill Kelley
Diversified Investment Advisors
The New Year is a great time to assess
your Ascension Health Retirement
Savings Plan. Review the checklist
below and try to complete as many
items as you can.
• Update your contribution rate. The
beginning of the year is a good time
to think about your expected
earnings and expenses so you can set
your contribution rate. Adding a
small percentage of earnings now
will give you a tremendous head start
on your overall retirement savings.
• Determine if your current investment
mix (stocks, bonds, stable value
funds) is right for your situation.
• Establish or update your beneficiary
designation.
• Consolidate your retirement
accounts. Did you leave money in a
401k, 403b or IRA somewhere else?
• Maximize your allowable contributions
if you can. The IRS allows you
to contribute up to $16,500 for 2011
(up to $22,000 for those 50 or older).
If you need help with any items on
the checklist you may contact on-site
Diversifed Representatives, Jill Kelley
or Greg Lewis at 308-7780. You can
also log on to www.divinvest.com,
or call 877-346-7284 to speak with a
participant counselor.
Four Provinces of the Daughters
of Charity Unite, Announce New
Province and New Leader
Emmitsburg Province Part of New Province
The Daughters of Charity have announced
the formation of a new
province for their community by uniting
four provinces in the United States
and Canada into what will be known
as the Province of St. Louise. The new
province is named for St. Louise de
Marillac, foundress of the Daughters of
Charity along with St. Vincent de Paul.
It will be incorporated in July 2011.
The process of unification, called Visioning
for the Mission, began in 2007
with a gathering of the Daughters of
Charity from all of the uniting provinces
in Buffalo, NY. From there a plan
was developed to make their vision a
reality. The Emmitsburg, MD; Albany,
NY; St. Louis, MO and Evansville, Ind.
Provinces have chosen St. Louis as the
location of their new Provincial home
and offices. The Daughters of Charity
who serve with SVHC are currently in
the Emmitsburg (MD) Province.
The Daughters of Charity have as their
“rule” that they are “sent” on mission.
Being available to meet the needs of
persons who
live in poverty
requires
great mobility.
St. Louis
allows for that
mobility with
adequate access
to public
transportation.
After consultation
with all
of the Sisters
in the uniting
Provinces (580
Sisters), Sr.
Louise Gallahue,
currently
the Visitatrix
of the Albany
Sr. Louise Gallahue, DC
Province, has
been designated
by the international
Daughters of Charity Superioress
General, Sr. Evelyne Franc and the
General Council to be the first
Visitatrix of the new province.
Food Pantry Needs
Paper
Grocery
Bags
By Sr. Patricia Nee
Vincentian Coordinator
Your support of the food pantry has
been a real blessing to our families.
Thank you for the food that keeps
coming from the various departments,
as well as individuals.
There is another way in which you
can help the food pantry. If you shop
at a store that has paper bags, you can
request paper and donate the paper
bags to the food pantry. Any assistance
here is really appreciated.
Thank you,
Sister Patricia Nee
Board Certified Pharmacotherapy
Specialist certification (BCPS)
The obtainment of advanced
qualifications after the completion
of formal training is challenging and
is a sign of professional commitment.
Being recognized as a board certified
pharmacotherapy specialist is a
prestigious honor. Less than 2.5% of
all pharmacists in the United States
receive the recognition.
Thirty percent of the pharmacists on
staff at St. Vincent’s Medical Center
and 50% of the pharmacists on staff
at St. Luke’s are now board certified.
In addition, 47% of our pharmacists
have completed post graduate residency
training programs. The Department
of Pharmacy Services is committed to
enhancing the care provided to our
patients in order to ensure optimal
pharmaceutical care.
Congratulations again to all for their
tremendous achievements.
It is always a pleasure to share
comments that come from patients and
their families in praise of outstanding
associates, such as this letter that
recognizes Beverly Mattos, who
serves in Surgical Services.
Good Day,
I took my Aunt to the outpatient surgery
center on Tuesday Nov. 23, 2010
and we encountered Beverly. Beverly
was very helpful getting us from place
to place and was very nice. Without
her we would have had trouble navigating
through the construction and even
knowing where to go each time we had
to go somewhere.
She is a very busy woman who seems to
love her job and is certainly an asset to
St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Thank you and have a blessed day,
Christmas
Around SVHC
SVHC associates celebrated the holidays
in a big way by reaching out and sharing
the holiday spirit with others.
St. Catherine Labouré Manor associates
have a tradition of placing names of
residents in need on their Christmas tree
for associates to adopt. This year 180
residents received gifts of love that assured
them they were not forgotten.
SCLM associates also hosted a
“Minute to Win It” Christmas party for
the residents. Participants like
Gene Miyamoto discovered “skills” they
never knew they had!
St. Luke’s Hospital associates know how
to have a great time. Their Christmas
celebrations included adopting 25
families through the program coordinated
by Sr. Clare Marie Angermaier and
Bob Cook. Associates expressed their
love by making sure 56 children and
34 adults had wonderful gifts to open
Christmas morning.
St. Luke’s associates braced for the cold
as they shared music and scripture during
their Tree Lighting on the lawn.
If you’ve never attended a Christmas party
at St. Luke’s, you might want to plan to
be there next year. The auditorium was
packed with associates and their families
and Santa and his elves. Homemade goodies
and dozens of prize drawings could
have been enough to make a fun evening
but the party didn’t stop there. Geoffrey
McDowell’s piano playing and Christina
Carkuff’s vocals inspired the hushed audience
to reflect on celebrating God’s Gift to
us, His Son Jesus.
The Sugar Plum Fairies were there in all
their glory again this year! They were
accompanied by a parade of costumed
entertainers who sang and danced to
St. Luke’s version of the 12 Days of
Christmas:
On the _ Day of Christmas,
Switched to T8 bulbs
Nine network closets
Ten Million for NICU
Eleven Emergency Codes
Twelve pews for praying
St. Vincent’s Medical Center associates
weathered the freezing wind blowing
off the river to attend the Tree Lighting
program where they shared the scriptures
and sang carols, accompanied by
pianist John Mark Shaw from St. Justin’s
Church. Soloists Elisabeth Mathews and
Sabrina Walker roused the spirit among
the crowd with their outstanding renditions
of familiar carols! Hot tea and hot
chocolate delighted participants as they
came in from the cold for refreshments.
St. Vincent’s has a tradition of reaching
out to elderly members of our community
with a Christmas luncheon. About
25 seniors came dressed for the occasion
and thoroughly enjoyed a feast, catered
by Food and Nutrition, and served by
Christmas committee volunteers. Cherie
Mooney and her Ya-Ya Sisters shopped
for the seniors, purchasing and beautifully
wrapping gifts taken from their
individual Christmas wish lists.
Adopt A Family
Associates and physicians adopted 107
families – that’s 351 children and 132
adults whose lives were touched and
whose holidays were brightened!
Students from St. Vincent’s schools of
medical training had a great time as they
joined the Christmas committee members
for two days of collecting and distributing
the gifts to the families. Committee
members welcomed their spirit and
vitality – and appreciated their efforts in
weathering the cold to load heavy gifts
into cars!
St. Vincent’s Christmas committee
included Phyllis Appleby, Linda
Boyett, Cheryl Bradwell, Sr. Virginia Ann
Brooks, April Brown, Tracie Cox,
Ursula Davis, Nancy Doyle,
Haiti Medical Missionaries Perform Multiple
Surgeries Delayed by Earthquake
By William L. Cody, MD
North Florida OB/GYN
St. Vincent’s Division 4
Dr. William Cody and
Dr. William Long and seven
other medical missionaries went
to Fond des Blanc, Haiti on Nov.
9, 2010 to perform gynecological
surgeries that had been delayed
due to the Feb. 2010 earthquake.
The cases were canceled because
beds were needed for patients
with spinal cord injuries. The
Fond des Blanc hospital treated
many spinal cord injuries at
their 60 bed facility. In fact, 15
patients with spinal injuries are
still at the hospital because their
homes were destroyed and they
have no other place to recover.
The delay caused a significant
back log of gynecological cases.
The team arrived and lost no
time beginning surgery and
working until 9 p.m. the first
night. A rigorous schedule was
followed each day until the team
completed the last surgery on
Nov. 13. The team completed
21 surgical cases in those 3.5
days! All of the patients are
doing well.
The mission team volunteers
included Drs. Cody and Long
(GYN), Dr. Michael Soha
(anesthesia), Dr. Vanessa
Streicher (Family Medicine),
Micki Somers RN, Sandy Logue
RN, Ellen Mallette (surgical
tech), Lina Saintus (Deerwood
Rotary Scholar), and David
Whiteside (Deerwood Rotary
Ambassador).
Kids Together Against Cancer
Projects Displayed
An art exhibit from our children’s
support group, Kids Together
Against Cancer (KTAC), is on
display in the main St. Vincent’s
Medical Center lobby. “Our
Journey” tells about the group’s
purpose and various art activities
that include writing, pottery, painting,
and drawing. The full exhibit
offered a glimpse of the art therapy
our families create during their
sessions and was on display at the
Cummer Museum during the summer.
As we reflect on the past year,
let’s remember our calling to assist
those in need.
Introducing St. Vincent’s Open Heart Recovery and 5W Units
Open Heart
Recovery
By Connie Michener and
Karen Kesslar
St. Vincent’s Open Heart Recovery
(OHR) is an eight bed critical care unit.
Patients come directly from the operating
room and remain until they are
stable and can be transferred to the
2 East step down unit.
The 22 OHR nurses are all highly
qualified critical care (CC) nurses with
50% credentialed as CCRNs. There
are 10 ACP’s who function as unit
clerks and monitor techs. The staff is
like family, rallying together to care for
each other in times of need. Leadership
includes Director Pam Kleinhelter,
Manager Connie Michener, Educator
Magrieta Brandt, and Clinical Specialty
Coordinator Karen Kesslar.
OHR receives all patients who undergo
cardiopulmonary bypass and other
vascular cases. The nurses maintain
hemodynamic stability, weaning from
the ventilator and progressing as quickly
as possible through the recovery stage.
Patients who are too sick to progress are
supported for as long as necessary by
using hemodynamic support, ventilators,
and other means of support.
St. Vincent’s was one of the first hospitals
to perform open heart surgery in
Jacksonville. Stents have decreased the
annual number of heart surgeries from
about 1,400 in the 1990’s to about 600
currently, but they have increased the
acuity of the patients who have open
heart surgery. A significant number of
patients have multiple co-morbidities
requiring hemodialysis and mechanical
ventilation for extended periods of time.
St. Vincent’s open heart recovery unit is
a significant part of the huge success of
Some of the associates in St. Vincent’s
Open Heart Recovery unit are (L-R):
Five West is a busy 34 bed telemetry
unit specializing in heart failure and
renal failure. Staff performs continuous
ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
for renal patients. Our patients receive
disease specific education through videos,
Heart Huddle, interactive/handson
class and teaching at the bedside by
our excellent nursing staff.
Our commitment to excellence has
resulted in receiving the Get with
the Guidelines Heart Failure Bronze
Achievement Award from the American
Heart Association. We are also very
proud of our recent success in becoming
a Joint Commission
Heart Failure Certified
Hospital – third in the
state of Florida and
24th in the nation!
Our success is the result
Community Giving
Campaign
By Phyllis Appleby
Community Relations
A special thank you to all
of the SVHC associates and
physicians who participated
in our St. Vincent’s Health-
Care Community Giving
Campaign. Associates who
made a contribution were
given a coupon to enjoy an
ice-cream treat. Five lucky
associates from St. Luke’s
also won free tickets to a
Jaguars game. Winners were
drawn from associates who
came to the cafeteria to get their icecream
treat from Moody Chisholm,
Donnie Romine and Lorraine Keith.
Everyone stepped up to the plate and
we increased our participation this year
by 370%. Wow! Some departments got
creative like the St. Luke’s Surgery associates
who raised $300 at a garage sale.
St. Vincent’s is proud to be an organization
that continues to demonstrate
its ability to care about quality of life
throughout our community. Your gifts
and all that you do make our organization
and our community a better place
to live.
Associate Deborah Reed received a thank
Jennifer Jones, Health and
Wellness Coordinator
Physical activity is important at all stages
of growth and development. Living an
active lifestyle keeps the body well by
maintaining a healthy weight, strengthening
bones and muscles and improving
heart and lung function. As most people
age they become more sedentary and less
active. We need to work
harder to accomplish the
CDC’s recommendation
of 150 minutes (2 hours
and 30 minutes) of
moderate physical
activity per week to
maintain good health.
Activity time can be
achieved in a variety of
ways over the course of
a week. For example, one person may decide
to do 30 minutes of activity five days
per week, while another may decide to do
25 minutes of activity six days per week.
Remember to alternate between various
types of activity to help keep fitness fun
and exciting and provide optimal health
benefits: cardio, resistance, strength, flexibility,
etc.
Common examples of moderate
physical activity are:
• Walking (20 minutes / 1 mile)
• Bicycling (30 minutes / 5 miles)
• Dancing
• Water aerobics
• Swimming laps
Using a pedometer is a great way to track
your steps everyday. Aim for 10,000 steps
per day for greatest benefit. Remember
to take the stairs instead of the elevators,
park further away in parking lots and
walk around while talking on the phone
instead of sitting. You can also walk in
place, squat and lunge or do jumping
jacks during TV commercials.
Sailors Visit Campus to Say Thanks for “Treats for Troops”
St. Vincent’s Emergency Department associates
rallied in support of our troops
by sending their first collection of muchneeded
and wanted items to a squadron
with troops in Afghanistan in August.
That was just the beginning of the associates’
donations to “Treats for Troops.”
In appreciation for the department’s multiple
contributions, the Religious Ministries
Department, NAS, sent letters of
gratitude and visited the SVMC campus
to personally thank the associates.
LETTER OF APPRECIATION
To Moody Chisholm and
Kathy Courtney
We would like to express our sincere
appreciation for your generous donations
in support of our deployed Troops. The
efforts from Mrs. Brenda White and the
16 JANUARY 2011
contributions
from your
employees
will greatly
assist our
annual
“Treats for
Troops”
drive where
we will send
care packages
to our
Troops in
Afghanistan. These packages will be a
well received gift, especially as the
holiday season approaches.
Again, please accept our most heartfelt
thanks for your assistance in this event.
Mrs. White has been very supportive of
the military and we appreciate all that
she has done to make this event a great
success.
Service Awards Recognize Associates’ Dedication
530 Associates Have Served SVHC for 5 – 50 Years
You hear and read about them one or two at a
time, but it’s not obvious how many long-standing
SVHC associates there are until it’s time for
Service Awards. This year, 530 associates were
recognized for dedicating five or more years to
serving those who turn to us in their times of
need. Due special recognition is Richard Benjamin,
who has served with us 50 years and he’s
still going strong. Fred Oca isn’t far behind, with
45 years of service.
You’ll find the names of the 140 associates with
20+ years of service listed in this article. The
complete list can be found at www.jaxhealth.
com/service2010.
On behalf of the thousands of patients cared for
during your time of service and your co-workers,
we say “Thank you for your dedication!”
Veterans’
Wall of Fame
Cardiopulmonary Rehab’s
Display Honors Veterans
By Kathie Ford
Marketing
As Veteran’s Day neared in November,
Clinical Specialty Coordinator Lisa
Dean, RN, with Cardiopulmonary
Rehab, wanted a special way to
honor the many veterans who are
in the rehab program. She asked
Colleen Welsh, RN, to head the project
affectionately known as the Veterans’
Wall of Fame! Welsh asked veterans
to complete a short form, giving their
names and dates of service and encouraged
them to bring a picture taken
while in uniform.
As the names and pictures were posted,
stories were shared and respect deepened
for these servants who gave of
themselves to keep us free.
“The plan was to keep the Wall up for
a couple of weeks, but it has touched
so many hearts that no one wants to
take it down,” says Welsh. She said one
veteran brought his grandson in to see
the display and another took a picture
to send to his daughter. Another
veteran who was out when the board
went up, asked to have his name and
picture added to the collection when he
saw it weeks later.
Cardiopulmonary Rehab associates
(L-R) Colleen Welsh, Brenda Palmer
(associate and veteran), and Lisa
Dean stand in front of the Veterans’
Wall of Fame, made in honor of the
many veterans who are in their rehab
program.
“Many of these veterans have come to
us for 10, even 20 years,” said Welsh,
“and they are like family to us! This
is a small way of saying thanks for all
they’ve done for our country!”
