As I reflect on my first year as President and CEO of St. Vincent’s 

HealthCare, I think about how privileged I am to be surrounded 

by colleagues who take pride in living our hospitals’ mission 

and values. Whether they are supporting one of the St. Vincent’s 

community outreach programs, or are working on the hospital floor 

to help comfort a patient at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, 

St. Luke’s Hospital, or St. Catherine Labouré Manor, our associates 

are dedicated advocates who sustain and improve the health of 

individuals and communities. 

I recently read a quote by the British statesman Sir Francis Bacon: 

“In charity there is no excess”. Philanthropy, now more than ever, 

is vital to continue the mission at St. Vincent’s Healthcare. In some 

communities, our outreach programs provide the only consistent 

healthcare treatment people receive. The funds raised for our 

Foundation allow us to continue to treat those less fortunate and 

make a difference for them and their families—we put the heart 

back in healing. 

It is because of the generous donations to our Foundation that my 

co-workers are able to provide an enormous amount of medical 

care and patient services while being an essential, ongoing presence 

in the community. We thank you for your gifts—they have touched 

the lives of so many people through programs such as the Mobile 

Health Outreach Ministry, Family Medicine Residency Program, 

Patient Advocacy Program and more. I hope that this annual report 

inspires you to continue to give back because after all, you keep 

St. Vincent’s HealthCare the heart of our community.

Community Benefit & Annual Fund Report is our 

chance to give a heartfelt “thank you” for your 

incredible philanthropy to St. Vincent’s HealthCare 

Foundation this past year. Your support to our 

Foundation helps us continue to carry out our 

mission each day.

hospitals and in our community. This is also our 

chance to show off the awards and recognitions of 

our hard-working associates and their contributions

St. Vincent’s Foundation has also partnered with many local organizations to serve the medical needs of our 

community’s most underserved children and adults. Together, we have impacted numerous lives and offered 

hope where there was none.

The St. Vincent’s HealthCare administrators, Board of Directors, physicians, 

hospital staff and volunteers are dedicated to carrying out our mission and 

values each day. Our mission is integrated into every aspect of our culture 

and environment where we work as a team, serving the physical, emotional 

and spiritual needs of our patients and their families. We don’t just treat their 

body—we care for their mind and soul. 

Keeping the legacies of St. Vincent De Paul and the Daughters of Charity alive 

by living our mission and values extends beyond our hospital floors. Our 

extensive Community Benefit programs allow us to reach out to the uninsured 

and underserved populations, providing healthcare at no cost to those who 

would otherwise go without. 

The St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation donations enable us to provide 

over $56 million in care through our outreach programs, such as: Mobile 

Health Outreach Program, Good Samaritan Fund, Seton Center for Women 

and Infants’ Health, Mobile Mammography, School Nurse Program, Parish 

Nurse Program, HealthLink Nurse Assistance Line, Early Childhood Literacy 

Program, Emergency Pregnancy Services and more. 

Our strong commitment to public service in Northeast Florida is rooted in our 

values and traditions. Our Foundation partners with other local and national 

public service advocates in the community, improving the health and well-being 

for adults and children in our area. Thanks to these shared efforts, we are able

Seton Center for Women and Infants’ Health 

MOBILE HEALTH OUTREACH MINISTRY 

St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Outreach 

Ministry is a doctor’s office on wheels. 

Physicians and nurses travel to isolated and 

underserved areas throughout Northeast 

Florida to minister acute and preventive 

medicine to adults and children. These 

communities receive immunizations, health 

screenings, physicals, laboratory and 

diagnostic testing, wound care, referrals for 

specialty care, and more.

In 2010, your

funded a new 

robotic-assisted 

surgery device 

for our operating 

rooms. This new 

technology offers faster, safer and minimally 

invasive surgery procedures for patients. It also 

dramatically enhances visualization, precision, 

control and dexterity for the surgeons. As a 

result, hospital stays are shorter; risk of infection, 

pain and scarring are lowered; and patients are 

able to return to normal activities quicker. 

St. Vincent’s Healthcare, 

Blue Cross and Blue Shield 

of Florida and Duval County 

Public Schools have joined 

forces with HealthTeacher, an online health education curriculum, to educate 

students and parents about healthy living. We are partnering together to 

provide a community resource that provides educational tools that can help 

children and families live healthier lifestyles. 

HealthTeacher allows teachers in Duval County to have access to lesson plans 

on various health topics such as nutrition, mental health, injury prevention and 

tobacco, alcohol and drug use. More than 900 Duval County teachers accessed 

10,100 HealthTeacher lesson plans to supplement 

health education in their classrooms last year. 

Since using this curriculum, teachers have reported 

that their own personal knowledge of healthy 

living has been enriched. They also noticed that 

as a result of using HealthTeacher, their students 

have shown positive behavior changes, as well as 

improvements of their health knowledge. 

THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPEL AT ST. LUKE’S HOSPITAL 

Dave and Mary Pat Kulik’s benevolent donation of The Divine Mercy Chapel 

at St. Luke’s Hospital is a generous investment in the mission of St. Vincent’s 

HealthCare. This Eucharistic chapel seats 50 and is open to people of all faiths. 

Patients, their families and visitors will find the chapel 

to be a place of peace, warmth and hope.

The chapel features three Tiffany stained glass 

windows depicting Jesus as the Good Shepherd and 

Magnificent Angels at His side. The architectural 

design, with Italian tile, gold plated ceiling and 

hand-carved wooden cross, conveys a feeling of 

old world beauty that is both welcoming and 

comforting to all those who wish to enter and pray.

Heart Failure Bronze Performance 

Achievement Award 

St. Vincent’s HealthCare is proud to be home to the only two 

hospitals in Northeast Florida to receive Advanced Certification 

from the Joint Commission for heart failure care. Both 

St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Riverside and St. Luke’s Hospital on 

the southside received the elite designation in December 2010. 

The honor has only been given to two other hospitals in Florida and just 21 other 

hospitals in the entire nation. 

The distinction given by the Joint Commission is considered the Gold Seal of 

Approval for health care quality. For patients it means they will receive some 

of the very best heart failure care in the nation when they are treated at either 

St. Luke’s Hospital or St. Vincent’s Medical Center. 

“St. Vincent’s Medical Center has long been known as the Northeast Florida heart center. We 

are proud to offer the same level of care at St. Luke’s Hospital. This honor further distinguishes 

the difference in care our cardiac patients receive at St. Vincent’s HealthCare. I am proud of our 

medical staff and associates whose work means the difference between life and death for patients 

that trust their lives to us,” said Moody Chisholm, CEO of St. Vincent’s HealthCare.” 

GET WITH THE GUIDELINES BRONZE PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 

St. Vincent’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital 

have each received the Get With The Guidelines ® 

Heart Failure Bronze Performance Achievement 

Award from the American Heart Association. 

This recognition signifies that the two hospitals 

have reached an aggressive goal of treating heart 

failure patients for at least 90 days with 85 percent 

compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by 

the American Heart Association/American College of 

Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart 

failure patients.

ST. VINCENT’S MEDICAL CENTER NAMED TOP BREAST HEALTH FACILITY 

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is proud to be awarded Northeast 

Florida’s first NAPBC (National Accreditation Program for 

Breast Centers) accredited breast health program. We are 

one of only five programs in the state to be awarded the elite 

designation. 

Accreditation by the NAPBC is granted only to centers that 

voluntarily commit to providing the best possible care to patients 

with diseases of the breast. Each center applying for NAPBC 

accreditation undergoes a rigorous application process and 

on-site survey to assure NAPBC standards are being met.

program at St. Luke’s with

clinical quality. It is the only 

hospital in North Florida to 

receive the distinction. The designation means the Family Birth 

Place at St. Luke’s Hospital offers patients some of the nation’s best 

maternity care. 

ST. VINCENT’S MEDICAL CENTER 

EARNS ADVANCED PRIMARY STROKE 

CENTER DESIGNATION 

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is Jacksonville’s 

newest Advanced Primary Stroke Center. 

The hospital received the official designation 

from the Joint Commission after an on-site 

review in December 2010. The Joint Commission Gold Seal 

of Approval, as its known, is given to centers that make 

exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. 

Time is crucial for stroke patients, so our Spine & Brain 

Institute work closely with our emergency medical service 

partners to develop stroke procedures for incoming patients. 

A highly qualified stroke team is organized and waiting for 

the patient at our emergency room, ensuring no time is lost 

upon arrival. 


St. Vincent’s Foundation 

INVESTED NAMED FUNDS WITH BALANCES AS OF JUNE 30, 2010 

Mary Lou Davis Endowment for St. Vincent’s Women’s Heart Initiative - $596,917 

Earnings from this endowment are used for the Women’s Heart Initiative as part of the St. Vincent’s 

Cardiovascular Program. In 2011, $45,257 will be used to promote diagnostic screenings and support 

a “Ladies Night Out” event focused on fighting heart disease at the St. Johns Town Center. 

Eloise and Bill Gay, Sr. Designated Fund for Cardiac Education - $77,349 

Earnings from this fund are used to provide cardiac care education to clinical staff. In 2009-2010, 

$1,615 was used to provide best-practices training and perform clinical trails in the area of cardiac 

care. 

Eula Givens Endowment - $12,282 

This annual endowment award of $500 recognizes an associate of St. Catherine Labouré Manor who 

practices the core value of dedication when caring for patients. The associate must also display a 

compassionate and nurturing attitude and have an untiring commitment to the mission of St. Vincent’s. 

The winner of this award in 2009-2010 was Theriless Branch, CNA - Marian Hall. 

Peter and Maxine Kroll Endowed Chair for Wellness Education - $50,629 

Earnings from this fund support wellness education in the Jacksonville Community. During 2009- 

2010, $8,734 was used for educating the community about health issues such as chronic back pain and 

what can be done to alleviate the pain and ways to prevent it from happening. 

Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. Lane, Jr. Nursery Endowment - $124,499 

Earnings from this endowment are used to provide on-going support to poor mothers and their infants. 

During 2009-2010, fifty-one women were provided with new car seats, clothes, blankets and basic 

necessities to care for their babies upon discharge from St. Vincent’s Medical Center. These items had a 

value of $5,575. 

John and Edna Lennon Endowment - $373,582 

Earnings from this endowment are used to benefit sick, elderly and infirm patients at St. Vincent’s 

Medical Center and St. Catherine Labouré Manor. During 2009-2010, $17,045 was used for this 

purpose. 

Betsy Lovett Fund for the Advancement of Surgery and Medicine - $148,987 

Earnings from this fund are put toward research, education and training for surgeons and operating 

room staff at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. During 2009-2010, $3,000 was used for education 

regarding early recognition and management of acute coronary syndrome as part of our Cardiac 

Center of Excellence. 

Nursing Scholarship Program Endowment - $447,265 

Each year, earnings from this endowment provide ten $2,000 scholarships for nurses at St. Vincent’s 

Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital to further their education by attaining a Bachelor of Science in 

Nursing or a Master of Science in Nursing. This program’s purpose is to provide better patient care at 

our family of hospitals. 

Carol Wilder Pitman Nursing Recognition Society Endowment Fund - $177,600 

Each year this nursing recognition society honors three direct care nurses that exemplify St. Vincent’s 

core values by providing compassionate nursing care with an award of $2,500 each. Nurses must 

practice patient-centered care, lead by example, have a positive spirit, consistently meet patient and 

family needs through integration of skills, knowledge, professionalism, compassion and tenderness and 

overcome challenges through a positive, caring and nurturing attitude for the benefit of others. The 

winners of this award in 2009-2010 were Kim D’Addona, RN, CCRN in CCU; Gale Parker Hall, RN, 

BSN is CCU; and Denise Miller, RN, CCRN in OHR. 

St. Vincent’s Physicians Giving Society Endowment - $565,109 

This physician-directed endowment fund focuses on supporting programs and technology that improve 

patient care at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital. During 2009-2010, proceeds 

from this endowment funded ten $1,000 nursing scholarships and two $2,000 medical technologist 

scholarships. Earnings were also able to provide $11,000 to the Body and Soul music therapy 

program, an i-STAT blood-testing system for the operating room suites at St. Vincent’s, an Informative 

Community Monitor Screen for the Emergency Department, St Vincent’s Family Medicine Center’s 

Reach Out and Read Program, Physician Mission Trips, and a research study on Vitamin C. 

Eleanor Jones Sandel Nursing Education Designated Fund - $537,634 

Earnings from this fund enable St. Vincent’s HealthCare to recruit and maintain skilled nursing 

staff by offering programs that promote clinical excellence resulting in the best patient outcomes. In 

2009-2010, $20,677 was used for programs to emphasize team training in nursing education, enhance 

support of nursing orientation, provide for in-service and continuing education, and create nursing 

career ladders commensurate with educational level and experience. 

Mary B. Winston Scholarship Endowment - $110,713 

Each year, earnings from this endowment provide five $1,000 scholarships in Radiologic Technology, 

Ultrasound Technology, Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine. The purpose of this program is to 

provide a career-education while meeting the staffing needs of these vital areas. The winners of this 

scholarship in 2009 – 2010 were Alicia Coan – Radiology; Fred Geerman – Nuclear Medicine; Kerry 

Hawley – Sonography; Brittany Hodges – Nuclear Medicine; and Sara O’Linn – Nuclear Medicine. 

Heart and Lung Designated Fund - $856,793 

Earnings from this fund support research, education and program needs of St. Vincent’s HealthCare’s 

pulmonary and cardiology programs. During 2009-2010, $24,835 provided nineteen cardiology and 

pulmonary nurses with on-going training and continuing education. 

St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation Endowment - $6,335,945 

These unrestricted funds allow for a three- to five-percent annual distribution for any need in keeping 

with the mission of St. Vincent’s HealthCare and approved by the Board of Directors, including 

subsidizing operating costs of the Foundation. During 2009-2010, $174,065 was distributed to 

community outreach programs.
