Service Excellence Legends By Paula Naugle Service Excellence In this edition we honor two volunteers who saved the day during a recent thunderstorm. Toni Mackie and Auxiliary Board member Joan Shewbrooks were at the SVMC main information desk when water began draining into the Lobby. Toni and Joan took immediate action to maintain safety and minimize damages. Toni stayed at the entrance to the chapel to prevent water from entering while Joan manned the entrance to the Gift Shop and prevented flooding there. Both Joan and Toni stayed extended hours to help until the water subsided. Our next two Service Excellence Legends come from St. Catherine Labouré Manor. The wife of a SCLM patient suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. The wife was not a SCLM patient but the funeral service was held in the SCLM chapel so the patient could attend. Marvin Fulton, CNA, came in on his day off to help support the patient in his time of loss and grief. Because the patient had no other family, other associates came to the funeral service to show their support. Marvin stayed with the patient through the service and helped escort him to and from the cemetery for final goodbyes. Toy Ellis, SCLM resident transport driver, went above and beyond to help Marvin and his patient make it to the graveside. The transportation intended to take Marvin and the patient to the cemetery was running more than 30 minutes late and the patient was becoming visibly upset and exhausted. Toy had a full schedule of shuttle trips but rearranged her times to drive to the cemetery just in time for the graveside service and then brought them back safely to SCLM. Toy did all this without delaying the schedule of other residents. Thank you to all of our Service Excellence Legends for demonstrating the Mission and Core Values of our Ministry. Volunteers Toni Mackie (right) and Joan Shewbrooks (above) were recognized as Service Excellence Legends for their recent efforts to maintain safety and minimize damage when water flooded into the main lobby at SVMC. Marvin Fulton and Toy Ellis brought SVHC’s Mission and Core Values to life when they showed extraordinarily compassionate care to a SCLM resident. 4 AUGUST 2011
