Shawn Mackie
is a Frequent Spirit Card Recipient
Shawn Mackie
Spirit Card recipients are recognized in each Mediscoop issue for going
above and beyond in service to patients and coworkers. Highlighting
frequent recipients allows readers to see why some names are on the
list time and again. This issue turns the spotlight on Shawn Mackie, a
rehab tech with SVMC Physical Therapy. He has received 10 spirit cards
in the last six months – and five of those were within the last month—
outstanding!
St. Vincent’s Physical Therapy Manager Eric Lisitano say, “Shawn has
assumed the department responsibility of supply ordering and through
his diligence, and persistence, the process has become seamless and
efficient resulting in a better workflow for associates and for the
department as a whole.”
When Shawn isn’t handling supply orders or working with orthopedic
patients, he’s with patients who have other limited mobility. “I think of
my job as ‘lubricating’ the process for the physical therapists,” he says.
“We get the room set up and equipment connected and easily accessible
so the therapist can focus on the patient.”
Mackie’s father, Jim, is a former SVMC Certified Athletic Trainer so it
could be assumed that Shawn was interested in following in his dad’s
footsteps. Not so, Shawn says. “I always respected my father’s love for
his work, but never considered it for myself.” He smiles and admits,
“I didn’t think I could pass the educational requirements for the job.”
When Mackie moved back to Jacksonville three years ago, with 13
years’ experience as a chef, he wanted his career to go in a different
direction. Healthcare entered his mind and his search led him to the
rehab tech position. “Now I love my job and find it very rewarding to
help people, especially those with balance issues, as they progress from
not walking to walking in the short time they are here,” he says. “It’s
amazing!”
Something else is amazing: “I’m in my third semester of college,” says
Mackie, “working towards becoming a physical therapy assistant. I plan
to continue my education and get a Sports Medicine degree and become
an Athletic Trainer.” Dad would be proud!
Thank you, Shawn, for your outstanding commitment and for living our
