Teenage Volunteers’ Fundraising Furthers SVHC Mission By Phyllis Benitez Volunteer Services This summer, 230 Teenage Volunteers (TAV) donated 15,000 hours of their time sharing their talents and skills with SVHC patients, visitors and associates. In support of our Mission, they collected eight boxes of children’s books for the Family Medicine Center’s Read & Romp program and several containers of food for the pantry. To top it all off, they raised a total of $900. The money was donated to the food pantry and Pastoral Care to purchase additional crucifixes for our facilities. Thank you to all who supported their fundraising efforts and opened your departments and hearts to the TAVs this summer. The program exists because of your support! Award Winning Name for New EMR System By Beth Fagin Information Systems The IS Department launched an internal contest to name SVHC’s EMR system and recently Dr. Perry and the project committee announced a winner. The name “OneCare” was chosen because it captures the clinical vision to improve the efficiency and safety of patient care. Our IS Department will spend the next 18 months building the integrated and single EMR record to be used at SVMC, SLH and the new hospital in Clay County. The person who submitted the winning name chose to remain anonymous and declined a $100 gift certificate. Instead, a random drawing was conducted with the names of all those who had submitted naming suggestions. St. Vincent’s ED nurse, Penny Baldasso, RN, was the big winner. The committee wishes to thank everyone for the enthusiastic response and all the very thoughtful name suggestions. Save Some Fish Feed Cigarette Butts to the Bait Tank By Kathie Ford Marketing & Communications The Green Team at St. Vincent’s has partnered with Keep Jacksonville Beautiful (KJB) to cut down on cigarette butt litter around our campus. We are the first hospital in Florida to install something called a bait tank. It’s a unique, odor-free, cigarette butt receptacle designed to keep rain out, holds 5,000 butts and at the same time educates the public about the environmental impact of butt litter through a fish meter located on the tank. The meter indicates how many fish have been saved by the quantity of butts collected. Butts that end up in the river wind up killing fish that ingest them. Through the partnership with St. Vincent’s, KJB purchased the first tank and installed it at King Street and St. Johns Avenue across from the hospital. St. Vincent’s purchased four additional tanks that were installed along the river. “St. Vincent’s welcomed the opportunity to take another step in environmental responsibility and whereas we prefer that there is no smoking except in the designated smoking area, we would appreciate it if smokers would do their part by feeding the bait tanks,” said Dee McKrow, Vice President/Support Services. Keep Jacksonville Beautiful members and Riverside residents Sarah Nan and Duncann Pullen collected the 2,121 butts in the jar from the areas that now offer bait tanks for butt disposal. New Associate Health Plan Guidelines Make it More Accessible New guidelines make Lap-Band and Gastric Sleeve bariatric procedures at SVMC and SLH more accessible for St. Vincent’s associates (and dependants) covered under the BCBS associate health plan. Patients must have a BMI of 35 with one co-morbidity or a BMI of 40 without co-morbidities. New guidelines include: • Continuous health coverage requirement: six months (reduced from two years) • Physician documented weight management program requirement: three months (reduced from six months) Learn more about the procedures by attending a FREE informational seminar.
