da Vinci Robotics Team Celebrates
Outstanding Accomplishment
371 Procedures Performed in Program’s First Year at SVMC
By Steven Wentworth
System Director of
Surgical Services
The Robotics Team at
St. Vincent’s Medical Center is
celebrating a huge milestone.
When the hospital purchased the
robot last year the expectation
was to perform 75 cases in the
first year. The robotics team far
exceeded that goal by performing
an astounding 371 cases! In
addition, more than 700 additional
cases were brought to
St. Vincent’s because of our new
robotics program.
“I’ve been involved with other
hospitals that owned the da Vinci,
but I’ve never seen anything like
the execution and performance of this
team,” says Moody Chisholm, President
and CEO. “The success of a robotics program
really comes down to the efficiency,
competency and excellence of the physician
and hospital team that serve EACH patient
with meticulous care and a focus on great
outcomes.”
Ian J. Kincaid, da Vinci Clinical Representative,
sent his congratulations to
St. Vincent’s robotic team after it had
performed 300 procedures, weeks before
the one year anniversary. “Many hospitals
achieve 100 and even 200 procedures in
SVMC daVinci Robotics Team
their first year but rarely does a hospital
achieve 300+ procedures like St. Vincent’s
has. The hospital has been the busiest
robotic surgery program in Jacksonville for
the last six months,” Kincaid said.
Our team is so efficient, an OR team and
surgeon from Indianapolis traveled here to
learn from the team and Dr. Paul Nowicki.
The Indianapolis facility performed 50
procedures in their first year.
“The addition of the da Vinci at SVMC has
provided women an opportunity for cancer
surgery and benign surgery that gets them
back into action in days instead of weeks,”
(continued on page 6)
Prepared Responders Emergency Pool (PREP) Launched
Since coming together as a national
health ministry more than a decade ago,
Ascension Health has seen a number of
the communities it serves face emergency
situations.
Last year, a system-wide Emergency
Management Task Force recommended
establishing a group of core volunteers
who would be ready and willing to assist
at Health Ministries such as
St. Vincent’s HealthCare during an
emergency. In response, the Prepared
Responders Emergency Pool (PREP)
has been developed to provide a pool of
emergency responders that can be called
upon in the event Ascension Health
experiences an emergency situation.
“When a disaster affects a Health
Ministry, a review will be conducted
to determine if PREP clinicians are
needed,” said Suzann Bylund, a Director
at Ascension Health with oversight
of Emergency Preparedness. “Processes
are in place to coordinate an emergency
deployment, compensation processing,
expense reimbursement, licensure verifications
and other program operational
needs. When needed, PREP clinicians
will be notified through an emergency
notification system.”
Registered Nurses, physicians,
pharmacists and respiratory therapists
are needed to support PREP.
PREP clinicians will be approved
through an application process. Once
an application is submitted, the applicant’s
supervisor will be contacted
to approve his or her participation in
PREP. At each Health Ministry, the
Emergency Preparedness Coordinator
will assist in managing PREP clinicians
locally.
To register for PREP, go to:
www.regonline.com/PREP
If you have any questions about
PREP, please contact Suzann Bylund,
Looking for Leaders!
We Need Team Captains for Heart Walk
By Gene Miyamoto
System COO & EVP
St. Vincent’s HealthCare is proud
to announce a partnership with the
American Heart Association for the
2011 Heart Walk event and we need
you! We are looking for team captains
to recruit, motivate and above all, lead
members of the St. Vincent’s Heart
Walk team to success at the walk on
Sept. 24.
As a sponsor, St. Vincent’s will educate
the community about the new “Hands
Only” CPR. St. Vincent’s HealthCare
will have a tent set up at the event to
promote the “Two Steps to Save Lives”
campaign.
I believe we will show the First Coast
that we are truly community-minded
associates who understand the
importance of the fight against heart
disease. Heart disease and stroke are
our nation’s number one and three
killers. The dollars we raise could
save the lives of your family, friends,
co-workers, neighbors…or even
your own life! My goal for us at
St. Vincent’s is to raise money, save
lives and have fun while doing so.
Heart Walk 2011
We already have 15 team captains
registered. Our goal is a team from
every department. If you would like to
serve as a team captain, please contact
Jennifer Stein at 904-308-8612.
Service Excellence Legends
By Paula Naugle
Service Excellence
In this edition we honor two volunteers
who saved the day during a recent
thunderstorm. Toni Mackie and Auxiliary
Board member Joan Shewbrooks
were at the SVMC main information
desk when water began draining into
the Lobby. Toni and Joan took immediate
action to maintain safety and
minimize damages. Toni stayed at the
entrance to the chapel to prevent water
from entering while Joan manned the
entrance to the Gift Shop and prevented
flooding there. Both Joan and Toni
stayed extended hours to help until the
water subsided.
Our next two Service Excellence Legends
come from St. Catherine Labouré
Manor. The wife of a SCLM patient
suddenly and unexpectedly passed
away. The wife was not a SCLM patient
but the funeral service was held in
the SCLM chapel so the patient could
attend. Marvin Fulton, CNA, came
in on his day off to help support the
patient in his time of loss and grief.
Because the patient had no other family,
other associates came to the funeral
service to show their support. Marvin
stayed with the patient through the service
and helped escort him to and from
the cemetery for final goodbyes. Toy
Ellis, SCLM resident transport driver,
went above and beyond to help Marvin
and his patient make it to the graveside.
The transportation intended to take
Marvin and the patient to the cemetery
was running more than 30 minutes late
and the patient was becoming visibly
upset and exhausted. Toy had a full
schedule of shuttle trips but rearranged
her times to drive to the cemetery
just in time for the graveside service
and then brought them back safely to
SCLM. Toy did all this without delaying
the schedule of other residents.
Thank you to all of our Service Excellence
Legends for demonstrating
the Mission and Core Values of our
Ministry.
Volunteers Toni Mackie (right) and
Joan Shewbrooks (above) were recognized
as Service Excellence Legends for their
recent efforts to maintain safety and
minimize damage when water flooded
into the main lobby at SVMC.
Marvin Fulton and Toy Ellis brought SVHC’s Mission and Core Values
to life when they showed extraordinarily compassionate care to a SCLM
resident.
The Duval County Health Department
says the county is currently experiencing
a “West Nile Outbreak” and has
issued a Mosquito-Borne Illness Alert.
As of August 11 2011, there were eight
confirmed cases and one death with as
many as 800-1,200 people affected in
Duval County. The eight confirmed
cases have all been on the Westside in
zip codes 32205, 32210, 32244 and
32254. There was also one West Nile
death reported in Glynn County.
Symptoms of West Nile virus may
include headache, fever, fatigue,
dizziness, weakness and confusion.
While health officials in Duval say they
have a mosquito response plan in place,
they encourage all residents to take the
following precautions:
• DRAIN standing water to stop
mosquitoes from multiplying
• COVER skin with clothing or
repellent.
• COVER doors and windows with
screens to keep mosquitoes out of
your house
Clinical Practice Development Program Awards
By Kathie Ford
Marketing & Communications
The room was filled with excitement as leadership, associates and their families gathered at St. Vincent’s for the Clinical
Practice Development Program (CPDP) awards celebration on July 25.
CPDP is designed to recognize and compensate professional nurses who demonstrate superior clinical skills. The program,
similar to an accreditation process, requires experienced nurses involved in direct patient care to apply and demonstrate their
superior clinical skills to reach the level of Clinical Nurse III, Proficient Level, or Clinical Nurse IV, Expert Level, each year to
receive special recognition and bonuses.
The program’s philosophy states: The CPDP creates a pathway for each nurse to achieve the highest level of clinical
expertise. Those nurses who choose to advance in the program are recognized for their efforts to further their education,
achieve and maintain national certification, contribute to improving safety and organizational performance, investigate new
nursing evidence and demonstrate leadership within the organization and community.
The recent recognition was a repeat performance for many of the 29 nurses
honored, making it obvious that they have an unquenchable thirst for higher
clinical expertise! Congratulations to each of these nurses and thank you
for your dedication to nursing excellence!
food pantry. In 2010, 1,605 families
were served through the Food Bank.
Those families included 2,687 adults
and 1,751 children.
Sr. Patricia shares an interesting incident
that happened during a trip to
Publix on a day when the
food pantry was very low.
“The man behind me in line
asked if this was for a food
pantry and I answered yes.
He said he had volunteered
in a food pantry and understood
the need. He then said
to put the purchases on his
bill. The bill came up to over
$80. When I asked for his
name, all he would tell me
was his first name. I thanked
him and assured him of my
prayers for his generosity.”
Sr. Patricia Nee is always excited to receive fresh
vegetables from St. Vincent’s Life Garden to
enhance groceries given through the Food Pantry.
These are the items most in need at
this time:
• cereal
• fruit
• soup
• vegetables
• canned meat/fish
• spaghetti/spaghetti sauce
• rice - 1 lb.
• canned pasta
• beans
• dry milk - 1 qt. pkg.
Your contributions will make a
difference in the lives of those who
turn to the St. Vincent’s Food Pantry in
times of need.
Thank you, Sr. Patricia, for all that you
do to keep the Food Pantry shelves
stocked, organized and ready to
provide food to the hungry.
By Jennifer Stein,
Wellness Coordinator
A new way to keep up with all that’s
going on at SVHC is to check out the
new Be Well BLOG that was started in
response to increased interest in social
networking.
The vision of the wellness blog is to
provide a platform for associates to
increase their health and wellness
knowledge and to share testimonies of
lifestyle changes and healthy behaviors.
As the wellness coordinator, I
hope to stimulate
discussion and
questions about
topics posted on
the blog. This
is a way to connect with the wellness
program at your convenience.
Posts are updated weekly and information
is shared across all dimensions of
wellness: physical, social, intellectual,
emotional, spiritual and environmental.
It’s a great resource and a fun way to
look back at SVHC events that you
may or may not have attended.
Teenage Volunteers’
Fundraising Furthers
SVHC Mission
By Phyllis Benitez
Volunteer Services
This summer, 230 Teenage Volunteers (TAV) donated 15,000 hours of their time
sharing their talents and skills with SVHC patients, visitors and associates. In
support of our Mission, they collected eight boxes of children’s books for the
Family Medicine Center’s Read & Romp program and several containers of
food for the pantry. To top it all off, they raised a total of $900. The money was
donated to the food pantry and Pastoral Care to purchase additional crucifixes
for our facilities.
Thank you to all who supported their fundraising efforts and opened your
departments and hearts to the TAVs this summer. The program exists because
of your support!
A portion of the funds raised by
the SVHC Teenage Volunteers was
donated to the food pantry.
Award Winning Name
for New EMR System
By Beth Fagin
Information Systems
The IS Department launched an internal
contest to name SVHC’s EMR system and
recently Dr. Perry and the project committee
announced a winner.
The name “OneCare” was chosen because
it captures the clinical vision to improve
the efficiency and safety of patient care.
Our IS Department will spend the next 18
months building the integrated and single
EMR record to be used at SVMC, SLH
and the new hospital in Clay County.
The person who submitted the winning
name chose to remain anonymous and
declined a $100 gift certificate. Instead,
a random drawing was conducted with
the names of all those who had submitted
naming suggestions. St. Vincent’s ED
nurse, Penny Baldasso, RN, was the big
winner.
The committee wishes to thank everyone
for the enthusiastic response and all the
very thoughtful name suggestions.
SVHC Teenage
Volunteers donated a
portion of the funds they
raised for the purchase
of additional crucifixes
for our facilities.
Be on the lookout for more information
over the coming months as we launch this
important and exciting project!
12 AUGUST 2011
As winner of the drawing for the IS project
naming contest, Penny Baldasso, RN (center)
was thrilled to accept a $100 gift certificate
from Beth Fagin and Dr. Phil Perry.
Save Some Fish
Feed Cigarette Butts to the Bait Tank
By Kathie Ford
Marketing & Communications
The Green Team at St. Vincent’s has
partnered with Keep Jacksonville
Beautiful (KJB) to cut down on cigarette
butt litter around our campus. We are
the first hospital in Florida to install
something called a bait tank. It’s a
unique, odor-free, cigarette butt
receptacle designed to keep rain
out, holds 5,000 butts and at the same
time educates the public about the
environmental impact of butt litter
through a fish meter located on the
tank. The meter indicates how many
fish have been saved by the quantity
of butts collected. Butts that end up
in the river wind up killing fish that
ingest them.
Through the partnership with
St. Vincent’s, KJB purchased the first
tank and installed it at King Street
and St. Johns Avenue across from the
hospital. St. Vincent’s purchased four
additional tanks that were installed
along the river.
“St. Vincent’s welcomed the opportunity
to take another step in environmental
responsibility and whereas we prefer
that there is no smoking except in the
designated smoking area, we would
appreciate it if smokers would do their
part by feeding the bait tanks,” said
Dee McKrow, Vice President/Support
Services.
Keep Jacksonville Beautiful members
and Riverside residents Sarah Nan and
Duncann Pullen collected the 2,121 butts
in the jar from the areas that now offer
bait tanks for butt disposal.
The
Spotlight
is Shining
Shawn Mackie
is a Frequent Spirit Card Recipient
By Kathie Ford
Marketing and Communications
Shawn Mackie
Spirit Card recipients are recognized in each Mediscoop issue for going
above and beyond in service to patients and coworkers. Highlighting
frequent recipients allows readers to see why some names are on the
list time and again. This issue turns the spotlight on Shawn Mackie, a
rehab tech with SVMC Physical Therapy. He has received 10 spirit cards
in the last six months – and five of those were within the last month—
outstanding!
St. Vincent’s Physical Therapy Manager Eric Lisitano say, “Shawn has
assumed the department responsibility of supply ordering and through
his diligence, and persistence, the process has become seamless and
efficient resulting in a better workflow for associates and for the
department as a whole.”
When Shawn isn’t handling supply orders or working with orthopedic
patients, he’s with patients who have other limited mobility. “I think of
my job as ‘lubricating’ the process for the physical therapists,” he says.
“We get the room set up and equipment connected and easily accessible
so the therapist can focus on the patient.”
Mackie’s father, Jim, is a former SVMC Certified Athletic Trainer so it
could be assumed that Shawn was interested in following in his dad’s
footsteps. Not so, Shawn says. “I always respected my father’s love for
his work, but never considered it for myself.” He smiles and admits,
“I didn’t think I could pass the educational requirements for the job.”
When Mackie moved back to Jacksonville three years ago, with 13
years’ experience as a chef, he wanted his career to go in a different
direction. Healthcare entered his mind and his search led him to the
rehab tech position. “Now I love my job and find it very rewarding to
help people, especially those with balance issues, as they progress from
not walking to walking in the short time they are here,” he says. “It’s
amazing!”
Something else is amazing: “I’m in my third semester of college,” says
Mackie, “working towards becoming a physical therapy assistant. I plan
to continue my education and get a Sports Medicine degree and become
an Athletic Trainer.” Dad would be proud!
Thank you, Shawn, for your outstanding commitment and for living our
Values.
