St. Vincent’s and St. Luke’s Receive
Achievement Award
St. Vincent’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s
Hospital have each received the Get With
The Guidelines ® –Heart Failure Bronze
Performance Achievement Award from
the American Heart Association. The
recognition signifies the two hospitals have
reached an aggressive goal of treating heart
failure patients for at least 90 days with
85 percent compliance to core standard
levels of care outlined by the American
Heart Association/American College of
Cardiology secondary prevention
guidelines for heart failure patients.
Get With The Guidelines is a quality
improvement initiative that provides
hospital staff with tools that prevent
future hospitalizations. In addition,
heart failure patients are started on
aggressive risk reduction therapies such as
cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers,
ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics, and
anticoagulants in hospitals following the
treatment guidelines. They also receive a
referral for cardiac rehabilitation before
being discharged.

the number of deaths in these patients.

The Guidelines works. Patients are getting
the right care they need when they need
it. That’s resulting in improved survival,”

people who energize you, in
whose presence you feel that you

Breast Health Center at SVMC Awarded
Three Year ACR Accreditation
St. Vincent’s Breast Health Center was
awarded three year ACR Accreditation.
Congratulations to the BHC associates for
successfully completing the on-site MQSA
survey for digital mammography. The
surveyor commented that the conversion
from film/screen to digital technology was
“exceptional” and that he is always impressed
with the high quality of the entire
breast imaging process at St. Vincent’s.

creative baskets entered in St. Vincent’s Basket Challenge and Silent Auction.
In fact, we felt the need to create a Special 3rd Place because the baskets were
so outstanding.
Thank you to all of the departments who created such great baskets and thank
you to everyone who came and participated in the Basket Challenge. A special
thank you to our judges as well.

Several associates have been recognized as Guardian Angels recently, with each one receiving a custom-crafted
“Guardian Angel” lapel pin in a special ceremony in their department or unit.
Gifts to the Guardian Angel Program benefit the Good Samaritan Fund, which cares for patients at St. Vincent’s,

as they relate to the Housekeeping and Food
and Nutrition departments. She says she goes
home “so fulfilled” every day.
Each day, Jones visits with new admits. “The
patient interaction provides great customer
service recovery opportunities,” she says. “We
can understand and correct anything less than
excellent.”
“Even doing something small to improve
a patient’s experience is important to the
patients and many times it’s those things they
remember,” Jones adds.
As Jones visits with patients, she draws insight
from past ministry experiences, including five
years with Youth with a Mission and Mercy
Ships ministries in Hong Kong, Mexico,
Canada and the States.

Thanksgiving is a special time of need.
These Fridays have been approved for associates to donate $5 to wear nice jeans or
“fun scrubs” with the proceeds going to the specific event.
Dress down attire includes “fun scrubs” or neat jeans – no cut-offs or cut-outs.
Please check with your manager or director regarding acceptable dress down attire
for your area.
An authorized sticker must be worn each Dress Down Day – no exceptions.
Stickers will be sold approximately two weeks prior to each Dress Down Day.

Step Out Walk. The walk course
winds through the Jacksonville
Zoo for the only walking safari in

Blooms and much more.
Prior to the walk, enjoy a delicious
breakfast. Following the walk,
participants can browse through
the Wellness Festival and partake
in free health screenings and

Having a baby can be one of the greatest
memories in a father’s life. St. Vincent’s
Family Birth Place Nurse Manager Althea
Whitehead, St. Vincent’s nurses, and IT
specialists welcomed the opportunity to make
it possible for one Dad serving 7,000 miles
away in Iraq to be in on his baby’s delivery!
Stephanie Neel’s husband is serving in the
military in Iraq, and had planned to come
back a week before the due date, but his
little bundle of joy decided to come early.
When Neel came to St. Vincent’s, her mother
brought their webcam and laptop and
worked with Mark Foster, a member of our
IT staff, so Dad could see the whole birth
live via webcam from Iraq. Soon after the
delivery, the American Red Cross made
arrangements for Dad to catch a flight
home to be with his wife and new baby.
