Good Neighbors
By Gene Miyamoto
SVHC System COO & EVP
Recently, we have received several complaints from
neighbors along St. Vincent’s and St. Catherine’s property
lines due to the activities of a few associates.
Whether during work time or breaks, on-campus or off,
associates are expected to be good representatives of
St. Vincent’s and maintain good relationships with our
neighbors and the community at large. Associates are
asked to not cause our neighbors to raise complaints
about St. Vincent’s, our associates or physicians, due to
actions (such as but not limited to smoking, loitering,
littering or arguing) on-campus or off-campus near our
neighbors’ homes.
The courtesy and wonderful community representation
of our associates is greatly appreciated. For nearly all of
us this is common courtesy, but a few associates need a
reminder. This note is to remind just a few associates to
remember to represent St. Vincent’s in a way consistent
with our values. Associates causing complaints from
neighbors will be guided through the corrective action
process to assure we remain a good neighbor.
Thank you.
LEGENDS
Service Excellence
By Paula Naugle
Service Excellence
Once again, we are excited to share the
stories of our Service Excellence Legends,
associates within our Ministry that
demonstrate their commitment to the
Mission and Core Values of St. Vincent’s
HealthCare.
Jason Zamora, an occupational therapist
at SVMC, was recognized for his
willingness to help patients by going
above and beyond his job. A nursing
unit said Jason assisted them in putting
a patient, who had not been out of bed
in a long time, into a recliner. Then,
while they were getting the patient situated,
Jason changed the bed sheets. The
patient had no inclination to do therapy
but Jason used every opportunity to
motivate the patient and his wonderful
attitude was appreciated by the patient
and the nursing staff! Thank you, Jason,
for helping the patients and your fellow
associates.
As an ACP on 4 East, Alden Mustard
is always a vital part of the team but
she showed true team spirit by helping
transport a patient from her 4 East unit
to the ICU. Even though it was not her
patient, Alden was quick to help. Unfortunately,
the patient ended up coding enroute.
Alden remained calm and helped
the code team stabilize the patient. Alden’s
peers say this is an example of the
consistent dedication she demonstrates
as she helps patients and peers. Alden
responds to all alarms whether it is her
patient or not and is always willing to
help no matter the situation.
As a social worker at St. Luke’s Hospital,
Cindi Hunter serves the poor within
our ministry everyday. Recently she
showed her ongoing commitment to
the Mission and Core Values by literally
giving the coat off her back. Hunter
had a patient who was being discharged
from the hospital on one of the coldest
days of the year and did not have a
coat. Normally, the clothing closet at
St. Luke’s is well stocked but, due to the
excessive number of freezing cold days
this year, all the coats were gone. Hunter
provided the very coat off her back to
the patient to wear home. The nursing
staff says Hunter shows dedication to
her patients in many ways that go unnoticed
every day. They want to make
sure people realize how much she does
to help our patients.
Colleen Welsh, an RN in Cardiopulmonary
Rehabilitation, brought the Core
Value of Creativity to life by creating a
bulletin board in the Outpatient Cardiac
Rehab facility to recognize military
veterans on Veteran’s Day. With their
permission, Colleen used pictures of
the soldiers when they were in service,
which for many was decades ago. Some
of them also gave current pictures for
the board. The veterans gave Welsh a
small bio with their names, branches of
service and years of service. The veterans
in the Cardiac Rehab program are
so excited to be shown on the “Wall of
Fame” that the bulletin board remains
up, in spite of plans to take it down
after a few weeks. New veterans coming
into the program ask to be included on
the board and it has become a talking
point and source of pride for everyone
who visits the Outpatient Cardiac gym.
Please join us in congratulating our
latest Service Excellence Legends!
Time is running out — make sure
you don’t lose your money!
4 FEBRUARY 2010
St. Vincent’s HealthCare announces
some changes that reflect our growing
healthcare ministry. As our physician
enterprise rapidly expands, additional
leadership support is needed to
provide a strong foundation. Randy
Hartley has been tapped to serve as the
Vice President Operations, Physician
Enterprises. In this position he will
oversee all physician initiative operations
for St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
“I am very pleased Randy is making
this transition for us. He has the skills
to dedicate the leadership we need
to maximize operations, throughput,
alignment and quality of all employed
physician practices with over 100
physicians and physician extenders,”
said Moody Chisholm, CEO,
St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
Randy has served as the Vice President,
Administrator for St. Luke’s
for the past two years, with oversight
responsibilities for all operations.
He was at the helm during the
Mayo transfer and established warm
working relations with the medical
staff. Initially hired by St. Vincent’s in
2005, Randy served as the Director
of St. Vincent’s Family Medicine
Center through 2007. He is a retired
Air Force Colonel.
Lorraine Keith will assume Randy
Hartley’s responsibilities at St. Luke’s
in a new combined role of Chief
Operating Officer/Chief Nursing
Officer. Lorraine was hired by
St. Vincent’s Medical Center as the
Director of Critical Care and the
Emergency Department in July 2000.
Her experience includes directing
inpatient, outpatient, pre-hospital
care and service lines. It is often stated
that her nursing experience is not only
a mile wide but a mile deep! Lorraine
transitioned to St. Luke’s in the fall
of 2010 to provide nursing support.
Lorraine’s 30 years of operations
experience made it clear she can
handle additional responsibilities.
Lorraine will report to Donnie
Romine, President of St. Luke’s
Hospital, and will be responsible for
inpatient and outpatient services.
Donnie Romine shared these thoughts
about partnering with Lorraine, “She
brings significant executive leadership
experience to the St. Luke’s Ministry.
Her nursing background and her track
record of successful service line development
make her a natural fit to lead
our clinical and operations initiatives.
I’m excited to have Lorraine on the
St. Luke’s team.”
Please join us in congratulating both
Randy and Lorraine as they assume
their new responsibilities.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Earns
Advanced Primary Stroke
Center Designation
from the Joint Commission
St. Vincent’s Medical Center is home to
Jacksonville’s newest Advanced Primary
Stroke Center. The hospital received the
official designation from the Joint Commission
after an on-site review in December.
The Joint Commission Gold Seal
of Approval, as its known, is given to
centers that make exceptional efforts to
foster better outcomes for stroke care.
“Time equals brain
when it comes to
stroke care. The
more time that
passes, the more
damage stroke can
do to the brain. It
is crucial for a person
having a stroke
to seek medical treatment
immediately and
where they seek that care can make the
difference between life and death. We are
proud to offer patients an advanced level
of stroke care at SVMC,” said Dr. Ravi
Yarlagadda, neurologist with the SVHC
Spine & Brain Institute.
“We work closely with our EMS partners
and have established stroke protocols.
This includes the development of a highly
qualified stroke team. That team is called
into action every time EMS alerts us that
a stroke patient is coming to SVMC. It
ensures we are mobilized to respond to
these critical patients quickly, 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year,” said Jennifer
Crews, Director of Neurosciences and
Orthopedics at SVHC.
“I am inspired by the dedication of our
medical teams across disciplines at both
of our hospitals to provide the highest
levels of care. This Advanced Primary
Stroke Center designation is the result
of hard work from many clinicians but
ultimately it is a win for our patients and
for that I am most proud,” said Moody
Chisholm, CEO of St. Vincent’s Health-
Care.
Soon after receiving this designation,
Cynthia Hailey-Moore, Stroke/Chest
Pain Coordinator, reported, “We are
receiving a bronze award from the AHA
for demonstrating at least an 85 percent
compliance in at least seven stroke
measures over a 90 day period (October
– December.) This is a great kick-off for
our Stroke Center.”
The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke
Center Certification program was developed
in collaboration with the American
Stroke Association in 2003. For more
From the
Heart
Associates Live the
Mission as They Care
for Co-worker
Child Seriously Injured and
Home Destroyed by Fire
On Monday afternoon, January 17, the
home of SVMC Environmental Services
associate, Johnel Kirk, caught on fire
while she and her daughter were napping.
Awakened by the smell of smoke,
Johnel was able to rush to her three
year old daughter’s room and pull little
Maya out of the densely black, smoke
filled room. By the time she reached
the neighbor’s house, her home was
engulfed in flames – sadly they lost
everything.
Little Maya was admitted to the
Pediatric ICU at Shands Gamesomely
for injuries due to burns and smoke
inhalation. She has since been transferred
to the hospital’s burn unit.
Thankfully she will not require any
skin graphs for the burns she sustained.
Johnel suffered mild smoke inhalation –
but is doing fine, and is able to stay by
her daughter’s side while she remains
hospitalized. Thankfully, the landlord
has another place for mother and
daughter to move into when they
return to Jacksonville.
The call for donations went out to
SVHC associates and the immediate
response was so amazing that within
a matter of days enough furniture,
clothing and household supplies were
donated to furnish their new place of
residence - meaning no more donations
will be necessary. Along with all of the
material donations, Johnel also received
numerous donations of money and time
8 FEBRUARY 2010
that will allow her to stay with Maya
while she continues to heal.
The Brighten Your Day committee
expresses gratitude to associates and
gives this update: “A big, hearty thank
you to all those who joined to help
rebuild the lives of our fellow associate,
Johnel Kirk and her daughter
Maya. Little Maya is progressing well
and Johnel reports that if all goes well,
they’ll be able to return to their new
home soon. Thank you for your gifts,
prayers and tangible outpouring of
love to this precious family. This is
just another example of how we live
our mission everyday by taking care of
those in need!”
SVMC associates (L-R) James Caudle,
Tiffany Johnson, Jackie Andrue, and
Patricia Long organize donations for
Johnel Kirk, who lost her home in a
January fire.
By Molly Haston
St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation
First Coast Energy’s Daily’s and Shell
convenience stores will offer customers
an opportunity to support St. Vincent’s
Mobile Health Outreach Ministry
(MHOM). Miniature paper buses that
represent St. Vincent’s mobile units
will be sold in denominations of $1,
$5 and $20 at 90 Daily’s/Shell locations
throughout Florida. Annually the
ministry provides more than 45,000
free medical services to children and
their families at a cost that exceeds $2
million. These families do not have
adequate access and/or resources for
primary care and would likely go without
if not for the free services.
“St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation
is grateful for this partnership with
First Coast Energy, LLP to not only
raise funds for our important Mobile
Health Outreach Ministry but to bring
awareness to a program that provides
desperately needed healthcare services
to thousands each year,” said Jane R.
within the functional areas of Finance,
Human Resources and Supply Chain
was finalized during the Design phase.
Accounts Payable, Payroll and Contracting
are some of the functions
that will be administered through the
Ministry Service Center. Workforce
Planning, Departmental Accounting
and Inventory Control are some of the
functions that will be handled through
the local ministry.
Additionally, other functions are not in
scope. These are aspects of the functional
area that are ministry specific or
that might be driven by the regional
market. Compensation is one of those
functions in Human Resources. In future
articles and as we get nearer to our
Symphony deployment date, we will
continue to clarify what is in scope,
what is not, what will be handled by
the Ministry Service Center in Indianapolis
and what will be handled
locally. All associates will have training
to assist with these changes.
Introducing St. Vincent’s 5 North
By Kendra Dixon
St. Vincent’s 5 North is a demanding 30 bed
telemetry/medical overflow unit. We treat
patients with heart failure and various other
conditions. This unit is one of the oldest in
the hospital but the staff are well informed
and knowledgeable of best practices in a
variety of care scenarios. The associates on
5 North are proud of the excellent care
offered to patients and their family and have
been recognized for their hard work.
Our commitment to excellence has resulted
in receiving the Get with the Guidelines
Heart Failure Bronze Achievement Award
from the American Heart Association.
We are also very proud of our most recent
accomplishment. Along with St. Luke’s, we
received Advanced Certification from the
Joint Commission for heart failure care.
The honor has only been given to two
other hospitals in Florida and just 21
other hospitals in the entire nation.
Our patients receive disease specific education, an interactive/hands-on class called Heart Huddle and teaching at the bedside by
our excellent nursing staff.
Our success is the result of a multidisciplinary team approach that includes physicians and representatives from all departments
that serve our patients. With this approach, our patients are ready to learn about and take control of their medical conditions.
Leadership for 5 North includes Director Jerry Boechler, Nurse Manager Deborah Lott, Assistant Managers Kendra Dixon and
Cassandra Stafford and Clinical Resource Coordinator Stephanie Moore.
Our department’s slogan is TEAM:
Together
Everyone
Achieves
The
Spotlight
is Shining
Tore Degelmann
is a Frequent Spirit Card Recipient
Spirit Card recipients are recognized in each Mediscoop issue
and there are some associates whose names appear time and
again. Readers might wonder, ‘Why?’ does this associate
receive so much recognition. This new feature will share the
reasons behind so many Spirit Cards for these individuals.
Our first featured associate is Tore Degelmann, who has
received 13 Spirit Cards within the last year, from patients and
associates! Her dedication also resulted in her being named
“Healer of the Month” in the summer of 2010.
Degelmann has worked with SVMC as an ACP on 4E for
almost two years. Tore says she loves people and “listens a
lot.” ‘Love thy neighbor’ is what motivates Tore. She says,
“It’s important to treat people the way I want to be treated –
and I know that I just might be a patient one day.”
Nurse Manager Kathy Koenig was at a loss for words when
asked why she thinks Tore receives so many Spirit Cards.
“Wow, where to begin? Tore is a wonderful person, she has
a unique sense of knowing when someone is in need of
assistance and will just appear to help out. She will assist all
staff and patients.”
“Tore’s personality, attitude and work performance is
outstanding,” added Salema Davy, ANM.
Koenig adds, “Besides the wonderful patient care she
provides, she is the “equipment lady” on the floor. She will
go room to room and gather all of the equipment and ensure
that all equipment has all of the pieces that are needed to
work properly and will correct if they don’t. She is always
positive when she is at work, encourages everyone on the floor
to work together and is a joy to work with.”
Thank you, Tore, for being such a wonderful example of
“Affirming the Hope and Joy of our Ministry!”
