SVHC Debuts New Advertising Campaign
at St. Johns Town Center’s “Holiday Spectacular”
By Kelly Brockmeier
Marketing & Communications
St. Vincent’s HealthCare (SVHC)
debuted its new advertising campaign
in front of thousands of people at the
St. Johns Town Center’s huge “Holiday
Spectacular” Nov. 19. SVHC is
the presenting sponsor of the annual
event that rings in the holiday season
and attracts 20,000 people to the
outdoor mall.
CEO Moody Chisholm and his family
got into the holiday spirit by helping
Santa and Mrs. Claus light the enormous
Christmas tree. Just after, fireworks
lit the evening sky. Earlier in the evening,
Dia Frampton from NBC’s hit show “The
Voice,” entertained crowds with Christmas
classics and some original songs from her
new album due to be released Dec. 6.
St. Vincent’s HealthCare was well represented
at the street festival portion of the
event. From 12-9 p.m. our mobile health
unit offered free blood pressure, glucose and
cholesterol screenings as well as a limited
number of free flu shots. Various service
lines were represented in one of our two
booths promoting our services and practices
like St. Luke’s 30 Minute ER, the new
St. Luke’s OB-GYN group, Diagnostic
Cardiology Associates and St. Luke’s
Cardiology, St. Vincent’s Primary
Care, our Orthopedic Center of
Excellence and the Spine and Brain
Inst. just to name a few.
The crowds loved having free holiday
photos taken in our photo booth.
They left with holiday-themed pictures
branded with our new “Above.
Beyond. Because.” tagline.
Before lighting the tree, Moody along
with several of our associates featured in the
new advertising campaign, graced the stage
to debut our new TV commercials. Moody
addressed the crowd telling them about our
Mission and the meaning behind the new
advertising campaign.
mission
Rooted in the loving
ministry of Jesus as
healer, we commit
ourselves to serving all
persons, with special
attention to those who are
poor and vulnerable.
Our Catholic health
ministry is dedicated to
spiritually centered
holistic care, which
sustains and improves the
health of individuals and
communities. We
are advocates for a
compassionate and just
society through our
actions and words.
By Kelly Brockmeier
Marketing & Communications
The Marketing and Communications
department shared the new advertising
campaign with associates on both
hospital campuses Nov. 10 and 11.
The Hollywood theme featured movie
marquees with the stars of the campaign,
an old fashioned usher that took
people to their seats and a ticket booth.
Associates were treated to popcorn and
drinks as they previewed the new “St.”
TV spots. After the presentation, tickets
were drawn to give away campaign-related
t-shirts and hats to lucky winners.
The new advertising campaign includes
TV spots, billboards, radio and print
ads, a new mobile app called
“St. Inspiration” and behind-the-scenes
videos on jaxhealth.com featuring the
associates who went above and beyond
for their patients.
The first commercial tells the story
of cancer care advocates, Marlynn
Townsend and Tanya Brown who
cleaned a patient’s home when she was
just too weak to do it herself. That spot
2 NOVEMBER 2011
also shows Scott Moody heading to a
downtown bistro to get a patient his
favorite meal. The man had not eaten
in a few days and Scott, motivated to
get him to eat asked “what would you
eat if you could have anything in the
world?” The patient replied, “a shrimp
cocktail,” and Scott made it happen.
He drove after work to pick up the
food and delivered it to the surprised
patient who ate every last bite! The
first commercial also features St. Luke’s
social worker Cindi Hunter who gave a
patient the coat off her back during
a cold spell here in Jacksonville. The
clothes closet was empty and Cindi
decided the homeless man needed the
coat more than
she did.
The second commercial
features critical care nurse
Patsy Roxas going above and
beyond for a dying man who
simply wanted to visit with
his dogs one last time before
he left this earth. After trying
unsuccessfully to get permission
to bring the dogs inside
the hospital, she made the
decision to bring the man to
the dogs. The patient was
very critical and Patsy was
unsure whether he would
even survive the ride down the elevator.
She prepared his family for the possibility
their loved one could die on the
way to see the dogs and they decided to
give their blessing for the reunion that
happened along the river. Patsy says
the dogs ran to the patient and began
licking him from head to toe. It had
been some time since the man had seen
his dogs and the tearful reunion lifted
his spirits along with the spirits of his
family. Despite being near death, Patsy
(continued on page 3)
Associates enjoyed movie-style popcorn and
soda while viewing the commercials. Alma
Bajagilovic (center) is featured in the advertising
campaign.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Now Treating Patients with
Gamma Knife ® Perfexion TM
New branding t-shirts and hats were raffled off at
the St. Luke’s and St. Vincent’s launch events.
Cindi Hunter gets a first look at the ad
featuring her story.
says the encounter with his dogs did
something for the man. He lived long
enough to be released from the hospital
and got to spend a few more days with
his dogs and family before passing.
It’s this sort of warm, compassionate
care that sets St. Vincent’s HealthCare
apart. We are pleased to be sharing
our Mission with the community and
showing people the heart of our organization
— YOU! We hope the campaign
helps to further your pride in working
for a healthcare provider that truly puts
patient’s needs first.
Above. Beyond. Because.
By Ilyssa Trussel
Marketing & Communications
St. Vincent’s Medical Center is now
home to the region’s only Gamma
Knife® Perfexion. The highly sophisticated
medical device uses radiation to
treat malignant and benign brain tumors
and other vascular disorders in a
single, one day outpatient visit through
non-invasive technology. The Perfexion
is also an excellent treatment for trigeminal
neuralgia, an excruciating and
incapacitating form of facial pain.
The name of the Gamma
Knife is misleading because
the device is not a knife at
all. This advanced medical
tool precisely directs focused
radiation to specific targets
in the brain while minimizing
the risk of harming nearby
healthy tissue. Typically performed
using local anesthesia,
this proven stereotactic
radiosurgical procedure helps
patients avoid incisions,
blood loss, scarring and long
hospital stays while minimizing
surgical complications.
The Gamma Knife® Perfexion
system offers patients a variety of
benefits. The treatment is bloodless,
virtually painless, requires no loss
of hair or head shaving and patients
return to pre-treatment activities
right away. Gamma Knife treatment
also has excellent, well-documented
clinical outcomes for a variety of
brain diseases and disorders and has
been in use for over 40 years. The
Perfexion is a new model that combines
pinpoint radiosurgical accuracy tied
to sophisticated treatment planning
computers.
For more than 50 years, the
Commission on Cancer has
recognized St. Vincent’s oncology
program for offering high quality
cancer care. The new Perfexion
system complements that program
and allows St. Vincent’s to expand
and improve its brain tumor
program and services.
Patients are treated at the center
after a referral from their own
physician. For more information
center, call 308-7411.
Stroke
and American
Heart
Associations
recently
awarded
St. Vincent’s
Medical
Center two awards for outstanding care.
We made the “Target Stroke Honor
Roll” for achieving the 60 minute goal
of door to drug for our stroke patients
that are eligible for tPA, a clot busting
medication, greater than 50% of
the time. We are the first in the city to
achieve this award and fourth in the
state.
SVMC also earned the “Get With The
Guidelines-Stroke” (GWTG) Silver
Performance Achievement
Award for excellence in
stroke care. The award
recognizes the hospital’s
success in providing a high
level of care by ensuring
stroke patients receive treatment
according to nationally
accepted standards and
recommendations.
To receive the Silver Award,
the hospital needed to
demonstrate excellence
in achieving numerous
GWTG criteria for 12 consecutive
months, 85 percent of the
time. These include aggressive
use of medications and therapies,
cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking
cessation.
Congratulations to the outstanding team
that includes the emergency department,
St. Vincent’s HealthCare Recognized by American Heart
Association as Fit-Friendly Company
By Ilyssa Trussel
Marketing & Communications
Heart disease is the number one killer
in the United States. According to the
American Heart Association (AHA),
inactivity doubles the risk of the disease.
That’s why the AHA encourages
companies to offer their associates
health and wellness programs. This year
St. Vincent’s HealthCare was recognized
by the AHA as a “Smart! Fit-Friendly
Company.”
Manager Teresa Bowler, Coordinator
Jennifer Stein and the entire Associate
Health & Wellness department work diligently
to create and promote wellness
programs for associates. They submitted
a proposal to the AHA explaining how
we are “fit-friendly,” and it paid off.
For all their efforts we were awarded the
“gold recognition” for several programs
we have in place.
St. Vincent’s Medical Center offers associates
and volunteers membership to
an on-site, 24-hour fitness center. Some
of the community fitness centers offer
discounts to St. Vincent’s HealthCare
associates. Morning and evening Zumba
classes and evening yoga classes are also
offered at SVMC. St. Luke’s and
St. Vincent’s campuses both have
beautiful walking paths. Some associates
also take advantage of the clean, safe
stairwells as a way to fit
in exercise at work.
In addition,
St. Vincent’s Health-
Care has teamed
up with Weight
Watchers to offer
Weight Watchers at
Work. This program
gives employees access
to a healthy weight
management program
conveniently scheduled
during lunch time.
This year, the Associate
Health & Wellness
team started a blog that
provides information
about healthy recipes,
walking/running events,
how to purchase the right athletic shoes
as well as journals for tracking physical
activity.
All of these programs are important
because they provide associates with low
cost or free alternatives for engaging in
a healthy lifestyle that encourages social
and emotional wellness while fostering
an environment for physical wellness.
St. Vincent’s is proud to be an
organization recognized by the AHA as
a company that prioritizes employees’
health.
JACKSONVILLE BUSINESS JOURNAL HEALTH CARE HEROES
Includes Four from SVHC
Each year, The Jacksonville Business
Journal (JBJ) names Health Care
Heroes in recognition of their contributions
to improving health care and
saving lives in Northeast Florida.
St. Vincent’s HealthCare is honored the
JBJ named four of our own as Health
Care Heroes for 2011.
CARDIOLOGY
Dr. Anthony Magnano joined SVHC
in 2006 as a Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist
and Cardiologist. His field
of cardiology is dedicated to diagnosing
and treating heart rhythm disorders.
He was
instrumental
in establishing
The
Atrial Fibrillation
(AFIB)
Institute at
St. Vincent’s
Medical Center.
It’s become
a teaching site
for electrophysiologists
and technical
staff around
the country,
joining only
a handful of
hospitals in the nation who share this
teaching designation.
Dr. Magnano has also been the recipient
of several research grants from the
American Heart Association, Biosense
Webster and Medtronic. He is participating
in multiple drug and device
clinical trials and is currently
St. Vincent’s primary investigator on
a St. Jude Medical study looking at a
new, improved catheter for AFIB
ablation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Jack Logue served as Chief Operations
Officer at St. Vincent’s from 1995 to
2002. After retiring, he led the efforts
to make the St. Vincent’s Spirituality
Center a reality. It’s a unique environment
where
associates
can seek
spiritual
nourishment
in
their life
and career.
He currently
serves
as the
Center’s
director.
Logue has
spent much
of his life
volunteering
in an effort to improve the lives
of others. Jack was instrumental in
transforming a one room clinic in Haiti
to what exists today: a 60 bed hospital
with nearly 200 on staff. He organizes
10 surgical trips to Haiti each year
that include volunteer doctors, nurses
and lay persons. Following the earthquake
of 2010, Logue helped organize
relief missions and assisted the Catholic
Health Association in raising $10
million to rebuild St. Frances DeSales
hospital in Port-au-Prince, which was
totally destroyed, and will voluntarily
oversee its reconstruction.
In 2004, Jack became one of the first
lay persons to serve on the Sponsor
Council of Ascension Health and continues
that role today, offering strong
leadership and vision for more than
70 health systems and 500 hospitals in
20 states.
NURSING
Karen Darnell is the Chief Nurse
Executive (CNE) for St. Vincent’s
HealthCare. During her 10 years with
SVHC, Darnell’s leadership has been
instrumental in developing model
programs and protocols.
She was a leader in the creation
of the Atrial Fibrillation Institute at
St. Vincent’s. It’s the only one of its
kind in North Florida, treating a
dangerous and often deadly heart
condition. She spearheaded the
creation of the Lung Cancer Institute
at St. Vincent’s in an effort to reduce
lung cancer mortality rates.
Darnell worked closely with
St. Vincent’s leadership to create a
nationally recognized protocol that
virtually eliminates decubitus pressure
ulcers in the hospital setting, which
can result
in costly
complications
and
sometimes
death. The
program
was so
effective
it was
adopted
by many
hospitals
within
Ascension
Health,
the largest
Catholic
healthcare
system in the United States and by the
American College of Health Associates.
A Great Success!
By Cynthia Farah
Oncology Service Line Director
St. Vincent’s associates,
physicians, friends and
families turned out in force
for the annual “Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer”
walk in both Duval and Clay
County Oct. 15.
St. Vincent’s was the Pink Premier sponsor of the event that
raises money to help ACS in the areas of research, advocacy,
education and services. Over 20 teams of associates walked at
the two locations to support cancer survivors in our area.
CEO Moody Chisholm spoke during Clay’s opening ceremony.
He then walked with his family and joined the SVHC teams.
I spoke at the Duval event and was amazed at all the energy
in the park. The new campaign “Put On Your Pink Bra” was
a great success! There was a sea of pink bras to signify the
importance of the fight to end breast cancer.
Thank you all for your energy and commitment to this cause.
Working together, we will make a difference in the lives of
those touched by cancer.
SCLM Administration
Dr. Nobuhiro Maruchi, a geriatric
medicine consultant from Tokyo,
visited St. Catherine Labouré Manor
on September 17. He is on staff at
Tokorozawa Loyal Hospital and was
attending the Mayo Alumni Association’s
67th annual scientific meeting,
with the theme “Innovation into
Action for Healthcare in the United
States.” Dr. Maruchi’s tour of SCLM
provided his first opportunity to observe
clinical practices in a healthcare
facility in the United States. He was
provided a brief history of St. Catherine
prior to his comprehensive tour
with SCLM ADON Kevin Peterson.
We learned from Dr. Maruchi’s thank
you letter that there are not many differences
between the USA and Japan
in the medical practices at clinics and
hospitals. He stated, “The cultural
and political differences should have
some strong impact, but in most
aspects activities in the healthcare
facilities are basically the same.” He
expressed appreciation for the time
extended during his two-hour study
tour and extended an invitation for us
to visit with him in Tokyo. We were
honored to have Dr. Maruchi visit
SCLM and found his gracious, polite
manner and keen intellect charming.
Fall Festival
The beautiful Semmes Garden
at St. Catherine Labouré Manor
hummed as bumble bees danced
to the music of “Mr. Sunshine”
during the Oct. 27 Fall Festival.
The costumes were fitting for
student nurses who seem to stay
busy as bees with the residents.
A longtime favorite with the
residents, Mr. Sunshine belts out
“oldies but goodies” that make it
impossible for many to resist singing
along and dancing!
Residents, family members and associates
also enjoyed games and lots of great food
during the festival. And, of course, there
were pumpkin carving and costume contests!
Winners were determined by who
received the most applause and activities
assistant Bryan Burleson presented them
with multiple food coupons good at campus
cafeterias. Good Shepherd Hall carved
up the winning pumpkin and “Prisoner of
Love” resident Teresa Longino, of Prince
of Peace Hall, won the costume contest.
Praise
Make a joyful noise unto the
LORD, all ye lands. Serve the
LORD with gladness: come
before his presence with
singing. Know ye that the
LORD he is God: it is he that
hath made us, and not we
ourselves; we are his people,
and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with
thanksgiving, and into his
courts with praise: be thankful
unto him,and bless his
name. For the LORD is good;
his mercy is everlasting; and
Security Access
to Electronic
Protected Health
Information
There are numerous
applications
installed across
St. Vincent’s
HealthCare
that contain
Electronic Protected
Health
Information
(ePHI) and many
people have access
to that information. Under the HIPAA
security regulations, we are required to
know everyone that has access to ePHI
and be able to audit that access. That’s
the reason everyone must have a unique
identifier to access our systems.
Access to ePHI is granted based on your
job role and systems that will support
your job. The password you use secures
that access and ensures someone
other than you may not enter or alter
data under your account. It’s extremely
important for you to use a strong password,
change it frequently and do not
share that password. If there are any
questions, please contact Information
Security Officer Spencer Hall at 308-
St. Vincent’s
Lung Cancer
Institute
Is Bariatric Surgery
for You?
Free Informational Seminars
are Offered
By Wendy Holt
Cancer Services
St. Vincent’s Lung Cancer Institute
(LCI) opened September 1, 2010 and
the first year has been busy.
During the first year, the LCI phone
number, 308-LUNG, received approximately
3,000 calls. The Institute
features the superDimension i·Logic
System (Electromagnetic Navigation
Bronchoscopy
® ). The
minimally
invasive technology
allows
pulmonologists
to biopsy
lung lesions
that might
have otherwise
required a
more invasive
procedure.
This year, LCI
staff spent a
lot of time educating SVHC associates
and the community about the
new program through health fairs and
appearances at gyms and businesses.
SVHC also recently served as the
premier sponsor for the Free to Breathe
national Lung Cancer Walk.
One of our main goals is to offer much
needed assistance to our lung cancer
patients and we are proud to share
some examples of our success:
• We connected a family with the
Memories of Love Foundation,
which provided an all expenses paid
vacation to Orlando for the family
while their Dad was still able to enjoy
it. The family expressed gratitude
for “a trip of a lifetime and
memories we will have forever.”
• We provided an indigent patient
diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer
the opportunity to die with dignity.
If we had not connected with him,
he would have died alone, isolated
and with no knowledge of what to
expect.
We look forward to another successful
year at the Lung Cancer Institute.
Marlynn Townsend helps patients on a
daily basis. It’s her job as a patient navigator.
But one scenario and one patient
will now have an indelible image in her
mind. On October 6, Marlynn shared
the stage with one of her patients in
front of hundreds of people. The story
of how she, St. Vincent’s and the Sulzbacher
Center helped him was featured
during the 13th Annual Transformations
event.
The program highlighted a few of the
lives that have been transformed by
the Sulzbacher Center. St. Vincent’s,
Marlynn and a couple of physicians
who practice at St. Vincent’s were featured
in the first story of the evening.
It focused on Thomas Lewis, a man
who was laid off from his job in 2010
and spent every last penny on medical
bills for the skin cancer he was battling.
In desperate need of help, Mr.
Lewis wrote a letter to a reporter at
the Florida Times Union. The reporter
referred Mr. Lewis to the Sulzbacher
Center, which in turn reached out to
the We Care Network and St. Vincent’s
HealthCare. We Care is a non-profit
that coordinates the volunteer efforts
of Duval County medical professionals
who “care” for the uninsured free of
charge. St. Vincent’s has been associated
with We Care for many years to
provide services for those who might
not be able to afford care.
Through the program, Mr. Lewis
had radiation therapy at SVMC with
Radiation Oncologist Dr. Paul Ossi.
He then underwent plastic surgery at
St. Vincent’s with Dr. Erez Sternberg.
As Mr. Lewis’ navigator, Marlynn was
in constant contact with him and
the Sulzbacher Center during his
care. When she found out he needed
plastic surgery but that We Care did
not have any plastic surgeons in their
program, Marlynn went above and
beyond to get Dr. Sternberg involved.
He willingly joined the program in
order to provide services for those
in need. For weeks, while Mr. Lewis
was healing, St. Vincent’s HealthCare
offered him a safe, comfortable place
to stay at The Mike Davidson Family
Overnight Guest Center.
During the transformations event,
Lewis’ story was shared with the audience.
Aside from thanking the community
for helping him heal and get back
on his feet, Mr. Lewis took the opportunity,
in front of the large crowd,
to announce that he is officially cancer
free and ready to get back to work.
St. Vincent’s HealthCare would like to
wish Mr. Lewis all the best in restarting
his career. St. Vincent’s HealthCare
would also like to say thank you to the
physicians, Marlynn and the other associates
who helped Mr. Lewis transform
his life. We are proud to have
such wonderful people carrying out the
Mission each and every day.
