Phillip Goodwin
Translating the English Bible
In Translating the English Bible, Goodwin utilises Relevance
Theory methods, derived by Ernst-August Gutt, to provide
a potential route out from the dominance of the so-called
‘holy marriage’ methods all based on one single ‘Authorised
translation’, and develops these methods to provide new tools
for the senescent task of translation. This then allows for new
hermeneutical approaches to the Bible.
The Author: The author completed a degree in Philosophy,
Politics and Economics before embarking on a career in
business. In 2006 he returned to academic work and this work
forms the substance of his PhD thesis. He has now resumed his
financial career, leading a fund management business based in
Daniel Hankore
The Abduction of Dinah
Genesis 28:10-35:15 as a Votive Narrative
Understanding a text from the narrator’s point of view must
precede the translation process. In this work Hankore
presents an argument for the intended utterance of Genesis
28:10-35:15 before proposing in brief how to translate it.
By following this process, Hankore shows that a correct
understanding of the concept of the ancient Israelite vow in
the framework of a social institution is fundamental to reading
and translating Genesis 28:10-35:15, and goes on to show
how this same votive framework assist an explanation of the
relevance of Genesis 34 to the Jacob story.
The Author: Daniel Hankore completed his PhD studies in Kenya in 2010 and is a translation
consultant with Wycliffe Bible Translators and is also coordinator for translation consultants for
Ethiopia. He is a preacher and teacher.
Jack R. Lundbom
Jeremiah Among the Prophets
This book is a representative discussion of the biblical book
of Jeremiah written for those who may never look into a
Jeremiah commentary or read a scholarly work on one who
arguably stands as the greatest of ancient Israel’s prophets.
Hopefully this will generate interest in all the Hebrew prophets
who are without parallel in the ancient world, and who define
the office of prophet up to the present day.
The Author: Jack R. Lundbom is currently Distinguished Visiting
Scholar at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston,
Signs of Salvation
The Theme of Creation in John’s Gospel
This book is a survey of the way in which John has taken the first Genesis account of
creation and re-presented it in the light of the person of Jesus Christ. It draws on recent
Septuagintal scholarship to further understand the ways in which John cross-references
and alludes to the Hebrew cosmological thought-world. Anthony M. Moore uniquely
applies a method of musical analysis to the biblical narrative of John to provide fresh
insight into John’s rhetorical techniques.
The Author: Dr Anthony M. Moore is Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral. Previously he
was Dean of Chapel, Chaplain and a Fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.
Perspectives of Jesus in the Writings of Paul
A Historical Examination of Shared Core
Commitments with a View to Determining the
Extent of Paul’s Dependence on Jesus
By coupling comparative instances in the gospels and the works attributed to Paul,
Schoberg invites the reader to enquire more profoundly than in past studies as to the
nature of the relationship between Jesus and the most dramatic of Christian converts.
This study of Jesus and Paul offers an insight as to how one is to make theological sense
Perspective Criticism
Gary Yamasaki provides a series of frames of analysis within
the theory of Perspective Criticism which may be applied
to biblical stories: the spatial, psychological, informational,
temporal, phraseological, and ideological perspectives.
Because the majority of the point-of-view devices found in
biblical narratives are also used in cinematic storytelling, the
book includes accessible analyses of film scenes, providing
pop-culture illustrations of the workings of the point-of-view
Alcuin
Theology and Thought
Scholar, ecclesiastic, teacher and poet of the eighth century,
Alcuin can be seen as a true hidden saint of the Church, of
the same stature and signifi cance as his predecessor Bede.
His love of God and his grasp of Christian theology were
rendered original in their creative impact by his gifts as a
teacher and poet. In his hands, the very traditional theology
that he inherited, and to which he felt bound, took new wings.
In that respect, he must rank as one of the most notable
and infl uential of Anglo-Saxon Christians, uniting English
and continental Christianity in a unique manner, which left a
lasting legacy within the Catholic Church of Western Europe.
This book is intended for the general reader as well as for
those studying, teaching or researching this period of early
medieval history and theology in schools and universities.
Denuded Devotion to Christ
The Ascetic Piety of Protestant True Religion
in the Reformation
Out of an understandable fear of idolatry or displacement of
the uniquely redemptive place of Christ, Christian piety in the
16th century moved away from the senses and the material
world - freshly uncovered in the Reformation. However, in the
quest for restoring “true religion”, sectors of the Protestant
material components of prior Christian devotion.
Ralph S. Werrell
The Roots of William Tyndale’s Theology
William Tyndale is one of the most important of the early reformers and has had a
formative influence on the development of the English language and religious thought.
The sources of his theology are not immediately clear, and historians have often seen
him as being influenced chiefly by continental ideas. Ralph Werrell shows that the
most important influences were to be found closer to home, and that the home-grown
Wycliffite tradition was of far greater importance. In doing so, Werrell shows that the
apparent differences between Tyndale’s writings from the period before 1530 and his later
writings, in the period leading up to his arrest and martyrdom in 1526, are spurious, and
that a simpler explanation is that his ideas were formed as a result of an upbringing in a
household in which Wycliffite ideas were accepted.
The Author: Ralph Werrell is an Anglican priest. He participated in the foundation of the
Tyndale Society in 1995. In 2006 his work The Theology of William Tyndale was published by
James Clarke & Co (see page 35). This new book is the product of his time as an Honorary
essays revolve around the key questions: In what way were
the German Lutheran tradition as Anfechtung] in relation to enduring theological,
philosophical, and pastoral questions of the otherness and hiddenness of God and the
self, the problem of suffering, and the nature of evil.
The author: Dr Simon D. Podmore is Lecturer in Systematic Theology at Liverpool Hope
University. He is author of Kierkegaard and the Self Before God: Anatomy of the Abyss
(Indiana University Press) and numerous articles and essays in philosophical, pastoral, and
systematic theology. He is also Secretary of the Soren Kierkegaard Society of the United
Kingdom.
The Ideal of Kingship in the Writings of Charles
Williams, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien
Divine Kingship is reflected in Middle-Earth
This new work forms an inter-disciplinary approach to Kingship
that offers the reader a key to a deeper understanding of
the work of all three Oxford ‘Inklings’. Scarf ultimately claims
that these ideas are important in the light of today’s Christian
belief (or lack of it) in contemporary Britain, and that it is only
in understanding these ideas and ideals that the three men’s
true contributions to English Life and Literature can be fully
appreciated.
The author: Dr Christopher Scarf is Master of the Music at St
The Story of Original Sin
This book traces the history of the interpretation of the
disobedience of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 through the
biblical period and the church fathers until Augustine. The
book suggests that it is time to move past Augustine’s
theology of sin and embrace a different theology of sin that is
both more biblical and makes more sense in the postmodern
West and in the developing world.
The author: John E. Toews is the retired President of Conrad
Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo, and the
Academic Dean and Professor of New Testament Literature
emeritus of the Fresno Pacific University Biblical Seminary.
Practices of Wonder
Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives
Despite the special relationship it has borne to many of our
most highly valued intellectual and spiritual practices, wonder
remains a neglected and understudied notion. This volume aims
to redress this neglect, bringing together a collection of essays
drawn from
different disciplines to consider the sense of wonder from a
number of complementary perspectives.
The author: Sophia Vasalou completed a PhD in Islamic theology
at the University of Cambridge in 2006. She has since been a
research fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and
