Introduction Figure 1-1 Examples of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in crude oils 1.3 Use of Mass Spectrometry for Hydrocarbon Analyses New technology, advances in methodology and increase of computational power have contributed massive generation of data in analytical chemistry. The evolution of mass spectrometry has attracted interest into the world of complex mixture analysis especially complex mixture of hydrocarbons. Mass spectrometry has seen a dramatic development over the last ten to fifteen years. Whereas in the 1990 MS was limited to the analysis of volatile stable compounds by electron ionization (EI) or chemical ionization (CI) ionization methods, the advent of soft ionization techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) has lead to a surge of technical developments. As a direct consequence of soft ionization techniques nowadays almost any analyte independent of its molecular weight and stability can be successfully ionized and transferred into the gas phase for MS measurements. Parallel to the development of these ionization techniques the invention of new mass separating systems and their improvement and fine tuning has taken place Most notable examples are the developments and commercialization of ion trap 8
