2 Chapter 1: Introduction<br />
<strong>of</strong> this work will ma<strong>in</strong>ly focus on the second po<strong>in</strong>t, manipulation <strong>of</strong> the sp<strong>in</strong> and understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the limitations <strong>of</strong> sp<strong>in</strong> propagation. The ma<strong>in</strong> objective is to shed light on some<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g effects <strong>in</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>-dependent electronic transport.<br />
Look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the literature one realizes that many proposals for two-dimensional (2D) sp<strong>in</strong>tronic<br />
devices are based on the presence <strong>of</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>-orbit coupl<strong>in</strong>g (SOC) <strong>in</strong> a 2D electron<br />
system (2DES) semiconductor heterostructure. This idea goes back to the sp<strong>in</strong> field-effect<br />
transistor proposed by Datta and Das[DD90] which is schematically plotted <strong>in</strong> Fig.1.1. The<br />
