Governance and Spatial Information Management 

University of Twente (UT) and the International Institute for Geo-Information 

Science and Earth Observation (ITC) join in a new Master of Science degree 

course on Governance and Spatial Information Management (GSIM). ITC 

appreciates your help in finding suitable candidates for this new and innovative 

MSc. Programme which combines GIS and social sciences. Please have a look at

ITC's GIS software ILWIS migrates to open source 

The Integrated Land and Water Information System (ILWIS) is a PC-based GIS & 

Remote Sensing software, developed by ITC. ILWIS comprises a complete 

package of image processing, spatial analysis and digital mapping. In order to 

create better opportunities for the reuse and deployment of GIS functionality in a 

wider community, the ITC directorate has recently decided to make current ILWIS 

software free of charge and to migrate it as such to open source software under 

the 52°North initiative.

Spatial Data Quality 2007 

From 13-15 June 2007, ITC is hosting the 5 th International Symposium on Spatial 

Data Quality, organised in conjunction with ISPRS Working Group II-7. 

The organisation committee is busy preparing an interesting programme, of which 

the five keynote speakers are already known.

ITC MSc Graduation 

Last week 131 MSc students graduated from different ITC courses. On behalf of all 

alumni we congratulate everyone and welcome them to the ITC alumni community. 

As a new ITC alumni a world will open for you and you will find fellow ITC alumni all 

over the world who can help you to get started after 18 months of lectures, exams, 

thesis writing and parties. Check our website to find your national ITC alumni 

association and contact them. If you cannot find an alumni association in your 

country, maybe it is time to start one yourself! If you are interested in doing so,

Geoinformatics diploma course at UCLAS 

The diploma course Geoinformatics, which in 

the past was offered only at the International 

Institute for Geo-Information Science and 

Earth Observation (ITC) in the Netherlands, is 

now also offered jointly by ITC and the 

Department of Geomatics at the University 

College of Lands and Architectural Studies 

(UCLAS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This 

move is designed to bring this very popular 

course closer to the targeted clientele in East 

Africa and the SADC region. Furthermore, 

bringing the Geoinformatics diploma course to 

UCLAS will serve to enrich the course by incorporating the local/regional context, thus 

making the diploma more responsive to the needs of various development sectors in 

the regions concerned.

ITC staff visiting Uganda and Mozambique 

Dr. Mark van der Meijde, Dr. Ernst Schetselaar (both senior lecturers at the ITC 

Department of Earth Systems Analysis) and Mrs. Sabine Maresch (sr. project officer 

at the ITC Bureau Marketing and Project Services) will be visiting Uganda from April 9 

to 12 and Mozambique from April 12 to 17. 

In Uganda and Mozambique they will visit several organizations that are active in the 

field of geo-information and earth sciences, specifically in GIS and RS for geological 

mapping and mineral resource exploration. During their visit they would like to invite 

ITC alumni in Uganda and Mozambique for an informal get-together.

Director External Affairs visits Nepal Survey Department 

On March 22-23, 2007, Sjaak Beerens, 

Director External Affairs, visited the 

Survey Department of Nepal (part of the 

Ministry of Land Reform and 

Management) in Kathmandu. Some 50 

staff members of the Survey Department 

are ITC graduates, including current 

Director General Toya Nath Baral, and 

Rabin K. Sharma, the first Survey 

Department employee to study at ITC. 

Sjaak Beerens met with some 20 ITC 

alumni, present at the Survey 

Department Headquarter in Kathmandu 

at the time of his visit and exchanged 

ideas and suggestions to further enhance the capabilities of the Survey 

Department in its ambitious future plans. 

On the occasion of the visit of Sjaak Beerens, the Survey Department hosted a 

traditional dinner attended by Secretary, Ministry of Land Reform and 

Management, the three Joint Secretaries of the Ministry and senior staff of the 

Survey Department. On this occasion, Sjaak Beerens was presented with a copy 

of the recently completed Atlas of Nepal.

Library Access

Since you have been studying at ITC I suppose you know the ITC Library very 

well. During your study at the ITC the library tried to create an environment for 

you, in which you were able to select, acquire and present the information 

necessary for your study. Besides that they tried to teach you the necessary skills 

to do so. The library cannot give you the same support and services as during 

your stay in ITC but for ITC alumni there are still possibilities to use the library. 

The services the library can offer you are: The catalogue ADLIB, The Digital 

Library and the Academic Output.

ITC Alumni Email account 

As most of you know ITC is offering its alumni a lifelong free e-mail account and 

at the moment we have around 2700 alumni accounts in our network. Though not 

all of the alumni are using the ITC account. Therefore to create more space for 

the current and new accounts we looked how much time alumni used there 

accounts. We concluded that a large group of alumni have not logged on the ITC 

mailbox for more then a year; the accounts are full and use a lot of space on the 

network. To create the space needed we decided to inactivate the email accounts 

of alumni who have not used their account for more then one year, with the 

possibility to activate it again when they decide to use the account again. If need

Charlotte Conservation Fellows scholarship program 

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is pleased to announce the opening of 

applications for the 2007-2008 Charlotte Conservation Fellows scholarship 

program. 

Under the Charlotte Conservation Fellowship Program, AWF is offering 

scholarships for full MSc or partial Ph.D. programs with field research components 

that produce knowledge or insight into specific conservation challenges in the 

African Heartlands or Conservation in general. This year, citizens of Kenya, 

Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Democratic Republic 

of Congo, Rwanda, Mozambique and Botswana are eligible to apply.

Alumni Gathering Uganda & Mozambique 

From April 8 to 18, three ITC staff members visited Uganda and Mozambique to 

meet with ITC alumni, visit their employers organizations and to market ITC 

education and project services in specifically applied earth sciences. Dr. Mark van 

der Meijde and Dr. Ernst Schetselaar (both assistant professors at the 

Department of Earth Systems Analysis) and Sabine Maresch (sr. project officer at 

the Marketing and Project Services Bureau) were very fortunate with the 

coordinating support of two ITC alumni; Yazidhi Bamutaze took care of an 

excellent program in Uganda and Daniel Ibraimo coordinated an equally excellent 

program in Mozambique. Their support and local network was crucial in the 

realization of so many meetings in such a short period. 

In Uganda Yazidhi and his staff also took care of the organization of an alumni 

reception and dinner. On Wednesday, April 11, some 50 ITC alumni gathered in 

the garden of a fine restaurant for a very nice dinner. Old friends were 

reacquainted, memories of their days in Enschede were shared, many words of 

appreciation were spoken and it was good to so see so many familiar faces again. 

The NFP officer of the Dutch embassy, Mr. Harry Abels also participated. 

Alumni Gathering Vietnam 

On the occasion of the visit of the Rector of ITC, Prof. Dr. Martien Molenaar an 

alumni dinner and reception was held last week in Hanoi, Vietnam. During the 

gathering Prof. Dr. Martien Molenaar gave a guest lectures entitled “Good 

Governance Requires Good Geo-Information: Geo-Information and Earth 

Observation in a Globalizing World”.

Opportunity to apply for Travel Grant to attend AfricaGIS 

The ISPRS Foundation is seeking applications from individuals wishing to obtain travel 

assistance from the “Trust Fund Amsterdam 2000” (administered by the ISPRS 

Foundation) to participate in AfricaGIS which will be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina 

Faso, from 15-21 September 2007. 

Deadline for receipt of applications: 20 July 2007.

New Training Course 

From 27 August – 7 September, together with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center 

(ADPC) and the Geoinformatics Center of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT-GIC), 

ITC will organise a new annual training course called “Use of GIS and Remote Sensing 

in Disaster Risk Management”, aimed at professionals working in the disaster 

management field who require knowledge on the use of Geoinformation. The course

The European Union’s new Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window offers 

more than 1,300 scholarships to Russia, Central Asia, Iran, Iraq and Yemen for 

purposes of studying, training or carrying out research abroad in the academic 

year of 2007-2008. The scholarships are targeted at undergraduate, master's, 

doctorate and post-doctoral levels, as well as at the exchange of academic staff

of the first visit of Professor Martien Molenaar, rector of ITC, to Vietnam.

Mahavir and Mr. Quan were both attending a 

reception hosted by Mr. Antonius L. M. van 

Zeeland, Consul General of the Netherlands in 

Vietnam, to meet the partcipants of the 

memebrs of various Netherlands Alumni 

Associations (NAAs) of about 10 Asian 

countries and the local Dutch business 

community in Vietnam.

This is the last ITC Update for the year 2007. Thank you again for forwarding this

65 students finished their course last month. Congratulations to all of you and 

welcome to the ITC alumni community! As an ITC alumnus a new world will open 

for you: the world of ITC. Share your Dutch experience with fellow ITC alumni 

and keep in touch with your former classmates. 

Do not forget to check our website to see if there is an ITC Alumni Association in 

your country, and if so, contact them. Is there no ITC Alumni Association in your 

country? Perhaps you would like to take the initiative to establish one! The Alumni

Have you successfully completed a course that results in the issuing of a PhD

degree, MSc degree, Master degree, Diploma or Certificate (which basically 

includes those students who have attended a course with a duration of at least 

three-weeks)? Then you can make use of all ITC Alumni services. Services include
