When Josh Kilmer-Purcell (advertising executive and NY Times<br />
Bestselling author of I Am Not Myself These Days & The Bucolic<br />
Plague) and his partner Brent Ridge (physician and former<br />
Vice President of Healthy Living for Martha Stewart Omnimedia)<br />
purchased the historic Beekman 1802 Farm in 2007, they had<br />
no idea that it would launch one of the “fastest growing lifestyle<br />
brands in the country.” (source: Nasdaq) Originally just a weekend<br />
getaway from their hectic NYC lives, the farm became their<br />
lifeline after both men lost their jobs within one month of each<br />
other during the recession of 2008. Faced with possible foreclosure,<br />
the pair made a decision – if they were going to save their<br />
farm, they would have to make it profitable.<br />
After taking in a neighboring farmer and his herd of beloved<br />
dairy goats, Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell began producing soaps<br />
and cheese. As other neighbors taught them how to farm, Ridge<br />
and Kilmer-Purcell shared their city-honed skills – starting a<br />
website and Mercantile. The men began working with several<br />
other local farmers and artisans to market their goods, and the<br />
entire village came together to host seasonal festivals, which are<br />
now attended by thousands of visitors from around the globe.<br />
Soon the press began noticing this little farm and village that<br />

Martha has taught us so much and has been an incredible supporter<br />

Epicurious called us “the next Martha Stewarts” we joked with<br />
her that it took two men to equal one of her. She agreed.<br />

it’ at the farm, what was the first thing you realized you needed<br />
to do?<br />
Shortly after cashing in our retirement savings and taking out a<br />
million dollar mortgage in 2007, we both lost our jobs in the recession<br />

lost the farm as well. Desperation is an incredible motivator and<br />
that’s how we picked ourselves up from the straps of our muck<br />

and sharing the food with the community puts meals in a<br />
context that is much different than a show where the host<br />
just teaches you how to make a certain dish.<br />

LIFE ON THE STREETS-<br />
Concrete to Canvas Urban Art Takes the Stage<br />
There was a time in the not too distant past that Urban Art evoked<br />
images of tagging and graffiti that for many equated to a public eyesore.<br />
Like many rebel movements, Urban Art has matured with its creators.<br />
LAB Art ‘s current show at Gallery 446, Palm Springs, highlights<br />
how far this art form has come and the acceptance it is garnering.<br />
The exhibition curated by Eddie Donaldson brings the work of Alec<br />
Monopoly, Mar, Gregory Siff, Kai Aspire, Thank You X, Benjamin<br />
Alejandro, Louis XXX, Bryden Lando, Jeff Hamilton, Beau Dunn, Skyler<br />
Grey, Lukas Avalon, Matt Fontana, Annie Preece, Richard Corman, Sarah<br />
Sandin, Ryan Lawrence and Carl Paoli to the desert.<br />
Each artist came to this art form from different paths. Some, like Annie<br />
Preece, were taggers. Running one step from the law does not make for<br />
great art but it does bring boldness and irreverence. “Love, Annie” takes<br />
on a whole different meaning when at the corner of a Warhol inspired<br />
soup can label with F#CK on it.<br />

Alec Monopoly, alias of an unidentified street artist, works primarily<br />
in the wilds of the urban landscape. His work grapples with the street<br />
style of spray paint and stencils while parodying the pop icons that are<br />
ubiquitous. Alec’s work is in sharp contrast to the prolific Gregory Siff.<br />
Part Pop Art, part Abstract expressionism, Gregory’s work carries<br />
the maturity of the movement yet remains a departure from it. This<br />
dichotomy is proof the Urban Art scene has gone beyond trespassing to<br />
acceptance. Beau Dunn’s work carries this notion further along.<br />
Beautiful, educated and an Urban Artist, Beau is everything you<br />
never knew about Urban Art. Her work captures the materialism and<br />
innocence of the urban youth, even if that youth is 90<strong>21</strong>0 and not 11205.<br />
But even with the shifts in the paradigm, artists like Benjamin Alejandro<br />
can also thrive. Inspired from the mug shots that seems to be a<br />
celebrity “must-have’ Benjamin views the mug shot as badge of triumph<br />
– redemption over destruction. Part sociologist, part voyeur, Benjamin<br />
is part of the movement that began as renegade art strikes and has<br />
moved form the street to the canvas. It is these departures that have<br />
made the LAB Art show at Gallery 446 worth the trip.<br />
That the diversity of talent can co-exist without ego shows that the<br />
concept of Urban Art is ready to take its place in the contemporary<br />
lexicon. The influence is seen in pop culture, think Shepard Fairey, and<br />
the Obama “Hope” images, clothing, video, “Grand Theft Auto “ anyone?,<br />
cannot be overlooked.<br />
Eddie Donaldson has done a wonderful job bringing various elements<br />
of a budding art movement under one roof. LAB ART runs through<br />
<strong>March</strong> 22 at Gallery 446 in Palm Springs.<br />

THE DESERT ROSE PLAYHOUSE TO PRESENT<br />
WORLD PREMIERE OF POSTER BOYS<br />
Rancho Mirage, CA - The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s live stage company<br />
serving the LGBT community will present the premiere of New York playwright<br />
Dan Clancy’s new play POSTER BOYS. The production will open Friday, <strong>March</strong><br />
<strong>21</strong>, 2014 for a five-week run closing on April 20, 2014.<br />
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM.<br />
POSTER BOYS is a drama set in Los Angeles. “Ned”, played by Jason Hull, and<br />
“Will”, played by Craig Michaels, are a couple and generous supporters of LGBT<br />
causes. Because of their high visibility and philanthropy, they are solicited to<br />
be possible public plaintiffs in the federal court legal battle against California’s<br />
controversial Proposition 8. The drama examines the personal toll that the public<br />
vetting and examination process takes on the long-term partnership between<br />
plastic surgeon Ned and commercial artist Will. At risk is their very relationship as<br />
private issues become public statements.<br />
Also in the cast are Ed Lefkowitz as “Jeffrey” and Ron Coronado as “Telly”, the<br />
activist couple who bring Ned and Will into the case. Also featured are Alex<br />
Enriquez, as “Morgan”, Will’s young model, and Candice Edsell as “Cassandra”, the<br />
lesbian attorney who is charged with the interview and vetting process Ned and<br />
Will undergo prior to joining the case. Desert Rose Playhouse Artistic Director Jim<br />
Strait directs. Playwright Clancy is participating in the rehearsal process to refine<br />
and polish this new production.<br />
The Desert Rose Playhouse is a project of Desert Rose Productions, Inc., a 501(c)<br />
(3) non-profit public benefit corporation. POSTER BOYS continues Desert Rose<br />
Productions’ mission to produce and present literate, relevant and entertaining<br />
plays and musicals to LGBT and Gay-Friendly theatregoers in the Coachella<br />

Michael: “In my previous column, Ron,<br />
we discussed your enterprise as an<br />
officiant marrying people in and out of the<br />
Coachella Valley. I understand you’re also<br />
a breath worker. What does that entail?”<br />
Rev Ron: I’m a conscious breath facilitator. I take people through a<br />
particular breathing cycle which isn’t difficult to learn. The breathing is in<br />
conjunction with very soothing music. It’s a very transcendent meditation<br />
that helps one move out of the monkey mind with all of its chatter and into<br />
a quieter calm state of mind. It can also serve as a tool to release any long<br />
held trauma stored in our memory or body. All memories are not stored in<br />
the mind.<br />
Michael: “Will you elaborate on that?”<br />
Rev Ron: “When one has unpleasant memories stored in the body and<br />
one has never had a chance to deal with them emotionally, they can often<br />
manifest themselves physically. The breath work allows a safe space or<br />
container to express them. I offer that safe space in my studio and help<br />
guide the client to let go of emotional traumas. It can be challenging for<br />
the client at times but it is ultimately very liberating; I don’t give advice. I<br />
consider myself a “Soul Companion” and support the clients on their journey<br />
regardless of their religious or spiritual beliefs.<br />
Michael: “You’re also a graduate of our esteemed massage school called<br />
Soma Therapy here in the desert,” You are a man with much to offer our<br />

The Dallas Voice put if perfectly: “The Lost Episode” is entirely the<br />
product of Morris’ twisted mind, adding tons of inappropriate humor<br />
you would be challenged to find on premium cable nowadays, not to<br />
say on NBC of yesteryear.”<br />
The reviewer from the Dallas Observer noted of her experience: “I<br />
wheezed so hard laughing that the guys next to me asked if I was<br />
having an asthma attack.”<br />
THE FACTS OF LIFE: THE LOST EPISODE premiered in 2004 in<br />
Provincetown, MA where Provincetown <strong>Magazine</strong> said “John Waters<br />
would be proud of Morris who has managed to turn a sweet, little<br />

believe that we are in <strong>March</strong><br />
already? Well up here on<br />
the mountain, in Idyllwild,<br />
CA, we have only had a little<br />
snow this winter. We are way<br />
behind in our snow count.<br />
But we are very happy to<br />
have received over 3 inches<br />
of rain the past couple<br />
weeks. We are in dire need<br />
of moisture. We don’t want<br />
another Scary fire season. No more evacuations would be nice.<br />
Other than that it is beautiful up here. I have daffodils, iris and many<br />
other flowers in bloom, just beautiful. This and fall are my favorite<br />
times of years with all the beautiful colors of spring and then all the<br />
wonderful fall color in the fall.<br />
Well it is only a couple weeks away until <strong>March</strong> 30th. That’s right,<br />
the Les Originals show will be held at The California Ballroom of the<br />
Renaissance Palm Springs with a reception with the stars at 6:00 and<br />

Another big event, well at least for me, will take place at the <strong>March</strong> 18th.<br />
The Bella da Ball Cabaret Dinner Revue at Azul. Show time is 7:30, but<br />
arrive early. I am in the show that night as we celebrate a belated St.<br />
Patricks Day. ALSO my good friend and photographer, Mike Thomas,<br />
will be unveiling a series of Pinkie photos. He was up here in Idyllwild<br />
a couple weeks ago to do a photo shoot with Pinkie at my home.<br />
From what I hear the photos turned out to be fabulous. He will also be<br />
creating a line of Pinkie products such as T-shirts, mugs, just about<br />
anything he can put a photo on. So come on down and check it out.<br />

Again I want to encourage each and everyone of you to live in the<br />
moment. This was a theme that was mentioned over and over in the<br />

opportunities for this non-profit organization. Desert AIDS Project<br />

The theme of the Desert AIDS Project merchandise is simply ‘Love Lives<br />

women’s tee shirts, and greeting cards. The concept was created to raise<br />
awareness for the charity as a whole and to provide targeted products<br />
for their 100 Women Campaign, an annual giving program dedicated to<br />
helping women and children living with, affected by, or at-risk for HIV or<br />
AIDS have longer, stronger lives. The original designs were created by<br />
Destination PSP specifically for Desert AIDS Project and are also aimed<br />
at a wide audience, both locally and nationally, beyond the core group of<br />
Desert AIDS Project supporters.<br />
“Sales from the ‘Love Lives On’ merchandise represent a generous<br />
contribution to our organization, which will assist with services for our<br />
more than 2,200 clients,” says Darrell Tucci, Chief Development Officer for<br />
Desert AIDS Project. “The ‘Love Lives On’ tagline is a simple and effective<br />
way for people to share their love and support for Desert AIDS Project.”<br />
The majority of Destination PSP merchandise is manufactured regionally,<br />
with sustainably produced packaging. Recently, the company provided a line<br />
of products for Palm Springs Pride festivities and the official merchandise<br />
for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which included unique<br />
apparel designs, accessories, and gift items. Destination PSP has also<br />
created products and original designs for non-profit organizations like Coyote<br />

Jimmy Carter’s Question<br />
Back in 1976, Jimmy Carter was running<br />
for US President and I was escaping<br />
from college at Kent State University.<br />
I read his book, Why Not the Best?, and<br />
was fascinated. When Jimmy came to<br />
Ohio, I arranged to meet the candidate<br />
twice. It never went anywhere – well, it<br />
did for him – but I always remembered<br />
something I read in his book.<br />
Jimmy told the story of applying for a job<br />
in the Navy and being interviewed by<br />
Admiral Rickover.<br />
The Admiral asked how Jimmy stood in<br />
his graduating class at the Naval academy.<br />
“I came 59th in a class of 840!” Jimmy<br />
proudly announced.<br />
The Admiral asked in return, “Did you do<br />
your best?”<br />
Jimmy paused and reflected — something<br />
I’ve always admired about him — and<br />
honestly admitted that no, he had not<br />
always done his best.<br />
The Admiral replied, “Why not?”<br />
This interaction caused Jimmy Carter to base his entire presidential campaign<br />
on doing the best. It also triggered the title of his 1976 book. And of course,<br />
he went on to become the 39th President of the United States.<br />
That story made an impression on me back in 1976 and never left me. It’s still<br />
with me today.<br />
Whenever I complete a project, I always ask myself, “Have you done your<br />
best?”<br />
I won’t allow myself to slide and flippantly answer the question. I make myself<br />
really reflect.<br />
Have I really done my best?<br />
Is this all I can do?<br />
Will a little bit more time and effort make it even better?<br />

And when I got into the studio with my band, I rewrote the songs again.<br />
Why?<br />
I was urging myself to do my best.<br />
I was asking myself, “Have you done your best?”<br />
Have you done your best?<br />
When you look at the question from a sincere perspective, and don’t allow<br />
yourself any wiggle room in squirming out of an honest answer, you can usually<br />
see that you have not done your best.<br />
At that point it’s up to you to make a decision and make it your best.<br />
One of the reasons I have been so successful in so many fields is this stance<br />
of disciplining myself to do my best.<br />

to rest, and the timing couldn’t be any<br />
better. The actor announced in early<br />
2013 that he planned to take a long<br />
break after wrapping “The Wolf of Wall<br />
Street.” What better place to unwind after<br />
award season than in a brand new<br />

The first rumors of DiCaprio buying<br />
in Coachella Valley was reported by<br />
a local paper, The Desert Sun. The<br />
publication confirmed the sale price of<br />
$5.2 million, but due to confidentiality<br />
agreements, they could not confirm Di-<br />
Caprio as the buyer. Property records,<br />
however, link the purchasing LLC to<br />
the same address as DiCaprio’s production<br />
company.<br />
Once owned by entertainer Dinah<br />
Shore, the 1.34-acre estate in the Old<br />
Las Palmas area was originally offered<br />
in January for $5.5 million. DiCaprio<br />
closed on the home last Tuesday for<br />
$5.2 million. Built in 1965, the house<br />
was designed by architect Donald<br />
Wexler for Shore. Measuring 7,022<br />
square feet, the mid-century home has<br />
6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. Previous<br />
owners did extensive work on<br />
the home, restoring much of Wexler’s<br />
original design.<br />
DiCaprio owns quite a host of properties,<br />
including two homes in New York,<br />
a sprawl in L.A. proper and a home in<br />
Malibu. He sold one of his Malibu properties<br />
late last year for $17.35 million.
