Israel: Life Science Powerhouse
Israeli physicians, scientists, researchers and engineers have propelled the country's Medical Device industry to the
leading edge of innovation and creativity, spanning all fields of medicine.
Quick facts:
• Israel is considered to be the second largest supplier of Medical Device solutions worldwide.
• Israel ranks #1 in Medical Device patents per capita (#4 in absolute figures).
• There are over 1,100 life science companies in Israel; 65% of them are Medical Device firms.
Several global medical corporations have found Israeli companies to be attractive business partners. Israeli
companies have proven their excellence in R&D, and in implementing breakthrough technologies in the Medical
Device industry. Some of the leading multinationals holding equity positions in Israel include GE Medical, Philips,
Siemens, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, and Medtronic.
A strong entrepreneurial spirit pervades Israeli society. Perhaps fueled by a young country’s need to develop
creative solutions quickly and cost-effectively, or inspired by improvisation and calculated risk-taking, it seems that
innovation is an Israeli way of life.
• Israel’s 16 Technology Transfer Organizations (TTOs) showcase the creative fusion between universities,
hospital systems, businesses and the military. All of the TTOs are dedicated to encouraging and promoting
research projects and military technology from the lab to the world market.
• Healthcare is a priority in a well-educated country. Israel spends 8% of its GDP on healthcare. It boasts a very
high level of healthcare and an extensive infrastructure of quality resources that range from local community
clinics to world-renowned trauma centers. The country has a high ratio of MDs to population (3.5 per 1,000).
The country’s entrepreneurial spirit runs through this sector as well: Many Israeli physicians are both early
adopters of new technologies and developers of original technologies in their own right.
• Israel has a highly skilled workforce. The country has the greatest number of scientists and engineers per
capita in the world; 24% of the workforce have academic degrees.
• The defense community nurtures the life science industry. Extensive investment in developing state-of-the-art
technologies for defense has proved fertile ground for advanced life science applications. Two very wellknown
innovations emerged from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems: PillCam TM , a video capsule endoscope
(developed by Given Imaging), and cryotherapy for the treatment of cancer (developed by Galil Medical).
• Strong institutional incentives support the development of new technologies. The 23 government-licensed
technological incubators, which began in the 1990s as a way to provide employment opportunities for new
immigrant scientists and engineers (many from the former Soviet Union), has evolved as a successful
framework for advancing and commercializing early-stage life science technologies. In fact, in 2008,
approximately 38% of the 1,175 incubator graduate companies continued beyond the incubator stage to
function as mature companies.
Nearly half of Israel’s technological incubators focus on the life sciences or biotechnology. At the end of 2008,
41% of all incubated companies were involved in medical devices, and 18% in biotechnology. Of the $360
million in grant money awarded to incubator companies by Israel’s Office of the Chief Scientist in 2008, 25.4%
went to those involved in the life sciences.
• The world’s venture capital community keeps its focus on Israel. In 2008, about 80 Israeli and international VC
companies targeted specific investment efforts on Israel. Of these, nine are focused solely on life sciences.
Company at a Glance
Located in Arad, Israel, 3QBD Ltd. is an ISO certified startup medical device company. The company has
developed the VGTest, a gynecological diagnostic device based on Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) which is
used in the detection of vaginal infections.
In December 2009, 3QBD Ltd. received the European CE mark for the VGTest, a device capable of detecting
and returning a positive/negative result for Bacterial Vaginosis, the most prevalent women’s vaginal
infection, within 60 seconds.
Future development plans for 3QBD include expanding research further into the medical field, to detect
additional major infections and diseases and offer rapid, accurate results. Other applications for the
technology include cancer, food and livestock.
Technology & Product(s)
IMS (Ion Mobility Spectrometry) Technology
3QBD's technology is based on the well-established and scientifically proven Ion Mobility Spectrometry
(IMS) technology – first used successfully to detect drugs and explosives. Today IMS is being used to detect
presence and type of infection.
Chemical changes in living systems, or degradation of cells after death through enzymatic and microbial
processes, are accompanied by the breakdown of amino acids and production of biogenic amines.
Pathological conditions in the human body may be expressed in the formation of biogenic amines, so that
elevated levels of biogenic amines may be indicative of dysfunctions. IMS is a sensitive instrumental
technique for detecting volatile compounds. It is based on measuring the velocity of ions (ion mobility)
drifting through a gas bath under the influence of an electric field.
The Product
The device works by measuring biogenic amines that are present at elevated levels in infections and
diseases, and returns a rapid accurate result. In the case of Bacterial Vaginosis the result is provided within
one minute. In addition, the VGTest for BV spares the physician from having to perform the Amsel Test and
“whiff tests” of vaginal fluid, or spend time waiting for laboratory Gram Stain results.
BSP has pioneered the clinical implementation of high-frequency ECG and has developed it into a fast,
accurate, low-cost, simple to operate and non-radiating technology for detecting IHD with greater clinical
value than the current standard ECG. The company’s proprietary HyperQ technology extracts and analyses
the high-frequency components of the ECG and provides a unique diagnostic index. Thousands of patients
have been tested with the HyperQ system to date, demonstrating consistently that HyperQ is far superior to
conventional ECG both in sensitivity and specificity, with the potential to save up to 50% of the unnecessary
radioactive imaging procedures, while improving the standard of care. BSP’s intellectual property portfolio is
backed by four granted patents and 14 filed applications in different stages.
HyperQ EX-300 Stress System: The HyperQ EX-300 Stress system enables an accurate and risk-free
procedure for the early diagnosis of Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD). HyperQ stress testing is performed in a
similar manner to a standard clinical stress test, providing the conventional stress ECG results, and the
HyperQ test results, with extraordinary clinical accuracy. The system is offered as a combination of software
and hardware that connects to a treadmill or stationary bicycle and constitutes a full ergometry (stress ECG)
station that is FDA (510k) cleared and CE certified.
Goal
Objectives: The company’s primary strategic objectives include establishing HyperQ as the first line modality
for monitoring and diagnosis of Ischemic Heart Disease in cardiology clinics, ambulatory and hospital
settings, and attaining reimbursement code and premium coverage over competitors for the HyperQ
diagnostic modality in the US. Growth in market penetration and market share will be achieved through a
combination of business partnerships with equipment and healthcare service providers, and by the
establishment of a global marketing and sales presence.
C-Boot’s patented system is a wearable sleeve comprising a unique pneumatic brain and several inflatable
chambers that wrap the leg. Using the body’s own kinetic energy while an individual is walking, the system
inflates the chambers in a gradient and sequential cycle which leads to blood release from both the
superficial and deep veins. This strengthens the body's natural tendency to enhance lymphatic and venous
return, and enables the blood to re-circulate toward the heart.
C-Boot concept allows patients to maintain complete mobility without the need for cumbersome external
pumps. The technology is protected by number of patents surrounding the use of kinetic energy to drive the
pneumatic action, as well as the sophisticated internal mechanisms that allow for the pneumatic action to
also be driven by a very small and portable compressor.
Itamar Medical Ltd. is a public traded (TASE: ITMR) bio-medical technology company. Itamar develops and
markets noninvasive diagnostic medical equipment based on the proprietary PAT (Peripheral Arterial
Tone) Signal. The PAT Signal serves as a noninvasive window to the Cardiovascular and Autonomic
Nervous Systems.
The PAT Signal is acquired by measuring pulsatile arterial volume changes in the fingertip by specialized
noninvasive probes. Itamar’s FDA cleared and CE marked PAT-based products include:
• Endo-PAT2000: noninvasive, office-based, user-independent device for endothelial function
assessment – the precursor (earliest clinically detectable stage) of cardiovascular disease.
• Watch-PAT200: ambulatory diagnosis of sleep-related breathing disorders and sleep staging
(Wake/REM/Deep Sleep/Light Sleep stages).
Both devices are used in preeminent clinical institutions, research centers and pharmaceutical clinical phase
Sleep testing - at home
Considered “best in class,” WatchPAT (FDA cleared and CE marked) is a wrist mounted device for at-home
testing of sleep apneas and sleep staging (REM/Deep Sleep/Light Sleep/Wake stages). WatchPAT also
measures snoring & body position and provides a perfect combination of natural sleep at home with sleeplab
level data.
WatchPAT works without the multiple cables and electrodes needed by other technologies that provide indepth
analysis of sleep, so it has an incredibly low failure rate. Yet the physician gets a comprehensive report
with all the clinical parameters needed for patient treatment and monitoring. While the data are calculated
automatically by the WatchPAT’s software, the physician can easily edit the data as well.
Noninvasive cardiovascular risk assessment
Atherosclerosis is the clinical manifestation of endothelial dysfunction. Leading the field of endothelial
function assessment, EndoPAT (FDA cleared and CE marked) is used in pre-eminent clinical institutions,
research centers and Pharma studies. The noninvasive EndoPAT has been validated by nearly 100
The creators of HemaClear® saw the need for a new, different kind of tourniquet, one that would be simple,
safe, sterile, and more cost-effective than any device on the market today. They had a vision, and realized it.
HemaClear® is the first and only single-use device that exsanguinates, occludes, and provides a clearer
surgical field. Beginning with a sterile field allows surgeons to place the device closer to the site than ever
before. Its narrower size provides a larger, dryer, and clearer surgical field, for a better view of anatomical
structures. Instant, on-the-spot sterility, and greater access to the surgical site assures a safer, more
successful surgical outcome.
Its innovative technology not only reduces blood loss, infection, and the volume of ischemic tissue, it’s
simplicity saves precious OR set-up time…as much as fifteen minutes…and over 100 separate steps that
can add as much as $300 to every procedure.
In fact, HemaClear® is so revolutionary, it represents the single greatest advance in tourniquet technology
since the Esmarch bandage.
HemaClear® has been proven worldwide in over 150,000 surgical cases… from the OR…to disaster-struck
Technology & Product(s)
There are two methods to measure pulse oximetry: by transmission through a body part or by reflection. In
general, the transmission method can only be used on limited areas of the body, such as fingers, earlobes,
etc. Furthermore, in some instances when the transmission method is used, physiological conditions such as
stress and temperature can affect the accuracy of pulse oximetry readings.
SPO Medical Systems has developed patented sensors that work accurately during physical activity. This
technique uses a reflective method whereby a very small sensor placed on the body at various locations has
the ability to measure oxygen saturation and heart pulse rate.
Innovative aspects and main advantages:
• The sensor technology very precisely captures vital cardiovascular parameters such as pulse rate, pulse
rhythm and pulse pressure.
• It consumes very little power, so it is useful for continuous monitoring of people in non-clinical
environments.
• It does not require tight skin contact. Therefore, it does not cause occlusion or discomfort and can be
worn comfortably around the clock for long periods of time. It is small and lightweight enough to be
easily embedded in wristwatch-type devices.
Talshir Medical Technologies Ltd., founded in 2008, is an exclusive licensed manufacturer and marketer of
NeuroVision – a technology that enhances vision neurologically and is used to improve and correct
various visual impairments.
NeuroVision was developed in Israel, where the company was established in 1999 by Dr. Uri Polat, a brain
scientist from the Weizmann Institute of Science. In August 2001, NeuroVision received FDA 510(K)
approval for the treatment of Adult Amblyopia (lazy eye), which until then has been considered untreatable.
The company relocated to Singapore in 2004 under the company name NeuroVision, Inc. due to government
interest in the treatment of pediatric myopia in the Asia-Pacific Region. During this time, the technology has
successfully treated more than 3,000 patients in Europe, the US, and Asia. In 2009, NeuroVision was
purchased by RevitalVision LLC, and operations were relocated to the United States in Kansas City, Kansas.
The company's studies have been published in multiple peer reviewed scientific publications. Awareness and
Technology & Product(s)
The NeuroVision technology is a non-invasive, patient-specific, perceptual learning program based on
visual stimulation. It facilitates neural connections at the cortical level through a computerized visual
training regime using Gabor patches, to improve contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. As visual perception
depends on both the optical input received from the eye and the neural processing of that input in the visual
cortex, NeuroVision technology improves quality of vision (contrast sensitivity and visual acuity) by
enhancing neural processing in the primary visual cortex.
The NeuroVision training system is interactive web-based computer software that provides a series of
individualized visual stimuli, which are designed to enhance the neural interactions in the visual cortex. The
treatment is sold only through eye doctors, who examine and monitor the patient's progress.
The average vision improvement is more than 2 lines on the visual acuity eye chart and 100% increase in
contrast sensitivity.
Neurovision is the only clinically proven and FDA approved therapy for Amblyopic Adults. The program is also
used to treat Low Myopia, Early Presbyopia, Post Cataract, Post LASIK (laser) and Low Vision patients. FDA &
CE-Mark approved.
Technology & Product(s)
Jet aviation engineering is being used by TavTech to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding aesthetic, skin
care and wound management markets. TavTech's patented technology creates a supersonic, two-phase jet
of micro-droplets consisting of saline solution and gas (air or medical gas) that is accelerated to velocities
that reach 200m/sec., providing a versatile and precise means for performing a wide variety of skin
treatments.
The pressure created by the high-velocity jet stretches the skin at the point of contact, causing
"barophoresis" due to pressure variance; the skin in the high-pressure zone forms a concave surface and
micro-canals in the outer layer of the skin broaden as the skin stretches and new canals are created. This
process facilitates hydration, cleansing and purifying of the treated area, opens access to the skin's inner
layers, allowing for deeper penetration, and the introduction of vitamins, anti-aging and other solutions.
