www.islington.gov.uk Christmas at home Local residents Sue and her son, Michael, of N1 are looking forward to Christmas in their new home Local families are getting the first chance to bid for new council homes in Islington, thanks to the council's new Local Lettings Policy. The policy means that when new homes are built on council estates, residents on the estate get first priority to bid for the new homes. This helps local families living in overcrowded situations to move into a bigger home, and gives other households the chance of a new flat. Islington is the first council to say “no” to the Government and Mayor of London’s plans to allow social rents to rise to near-market levels. In Islington, we are keeping our council homes at social rent, so that families on low wages can afford them. New tenant, Sue Kara of N1, and her son, Michael, are celebrating their first Christmas in their new home. Sue said: “I have been homeless and living in temporary accommodation or with friends since 2001 so the thing I have now is security. “The new flat is beautiful! It’s bigger, brighter and much quieter than my previous place. I’ve really enjoyed using the balconies throughout the summer and love my new modern kitchen! “I feel much safer than where I was before. Our new home has made a big difference to me and my son. My old place was dark and I feared being there. My new home is lovely and light and my son loves it too.” Sue, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, cannot work and has cared for her son for four years following a serious road accident. She says the move has given her a real boost: “It’s like being reborn, a new beginning and a new future for me and my son. “I’m really looking forward to Christmas. This is the first time in a long time we are able to enjoy all the festivities in a place that feels like home.” Cllr James Murray, Islington Council's executive member for housing, said: “We are desperately short of affordable family homes in Islington. We believe the Government's plan to raise rents is wrong for Islington - so we have made our own plan to build hundreds of new homes for social rent across the borough. “And with our Local Lettings Policy, when we build new homes on Islington estates, local people will get the first chance to bid for them.” By 2014, the council will deliver 1,800 new homes for affordable rent – many of them will be family sized. 13
