Islington has the third highest density of licensed
premises in London with over 1,200 licensed
premises in total (2011-12).
When licensees breach their licensing conditions,
we will take action. During the last 18 months we
have reviewed 43 licenses, revoked 15, suspended 15
and imposed additional licence conditions to 13.

We work closely with retailers to help prevent
underage alcohol sales. 57% of 63 test purchasing
exercises in Islington resulted in a sale of alcohol to an
underage person. In an area where we worked with retailers
to help them understand licensing laws, only 17% of 60
test purchases resulted in a sale.
We are working in Clerkenwell to crack down
on people leaving pubs, bars and clubs noisily and
behaving anti-socially; to prevent shops selling
alcohol, tobacco and knives to under-18s; and to
offer help and support to street drinkers.
Alcohol and domestic violence
Research shows that there is a
relationship between alcohol and
domestic violence, and that alcohol
can increase the severity of violent
attacks.
One in four women will be a victim
of domestic violence in their lifetime
and many suffer in silence.
