Local life Stand for your community Women who live or work in Islington are being invited to take an active role in local democracy and find out about becoming a local councillor. ‘Stand for Your Community, Be a Councillor’ is a free, informal event that will take place at the Town Hall on Monday 22 October, 3.30-6pm. The event will be a great opportunity to: learn more about how councillors can influence decisions that affect the community hear from inspirational women in local government find out how to get involved. There will also be sessions on tackling practical issues like balancing council duties with family life. Rakhia Ismail became an Islington councillor in May this year after several years running community projects for refugees and being involved in a local political party. She said: “It was many different issues that led to me becoming a councillor. It is easy. You can compost at home or the council provides a food waste recycling service to most houses and many flats in Islington. All raw or cooked food is accepted, apart from large bones, so make sure you recycle all you can. Three reasons why you should recycle more: It is cheaper to dispose of, meaning there is more to spend on important council services It is compulsory in Islington, so helps you to avoid a fine It is better for the environment.
