Cllr Catherine West, Leader of the Council
We know times are tough for
everyone right now so despite
government cuts we’re freezing
your council tax this year and
continuing our £100 discount
for older people (see the story
opposite).
We’ve worked hard to find
almost 90 percent of this year’s
savings from cost cutting, such as
sharing services and renegotiating
contracts, so we can protect
the things that make a real
difference to residents – keeping
our children’s centres open, helping our
young people find decently paid work,
and launching a new 24-hour anti social
behaviour hotline to better tackle a
problem that blights too many people’s
lives. Find out more about the new ASB
service on page 4.
We have also kept every single one
of Islington’s libraries open – a great
achievement when you consider what’s
happening elsewhere in the capital.
Turn to page 10 to find out more about
our libraries.
With the greatest show on earth
coming to our doorsteps in just a few
short months, our special Olympics
pull-out shows some of the ways you
can be part of the fun – from cheering
the Olympic Torch as it passes through
Islington to taking part in our free sports
day on Highbury Fields.
There was fun for
all at a recent event
to celebrate the
refurbishments,
including face painting
Watts, executive member for children
and families (left), Islington’s Mayor
Cllr Phil Kelly and five members of our
new youth council. Meet all the new
councillors on page 13
You might even end up with a
highly sought-after seat in the
of our community and, thanks to the
generosity of local businesses, we’re
giving away over 200 Olympic and
Paralympic tickets to those special
people who make such a huge
difference to Islington yet don’t get the
recognition they deserve. Nominate
Freeze on council tax
In Islington, we are freezing your
council tax this year and continuing
the £100 discount for senior
citizens. We are protecting your
services as much as possible from
government cuts by continuing to
get the best value for money.
We are also keeping all our libraries
and children’s centres open.
Despite the cuts, we are:
ASB hotline launched
Are you bothered by noisy neighbours, dog fouling, or
rowdy groups causing a nuisance in your community?
Confused about who to call about antisocial
behaviour (ASB) such as littering,
noise or dog fouling? A new 24/7
hotline means Islington residents can
now call at any time to report problems.
The council’s new ASB hotline number
is 020 7527 7272. Our team will listen
to your concern and let you know how
we might be able to help. Or you can
report your concern online at www.
islington.gov.uk/reportasb and someone
will get back to you within 24 hours.
The council has operated an out
of hours response service covering
experiencing anti-social behaviour
many years, patrolling and responding
to complaints about anti-social
behaviour which would perhaps not
warrant the police being called.
Happy customers
Residents who rang the estates
hotline said:
l “It was an excellent service that
exceeded my expectations”
l “I give the service 10 out of 10.
I thought I’d be phoning again
and again but I got through
immediately and was really
pleased.”
l “This is a really good number
to help deal with nuisance kids,
especially as I didn’t want to
waste police time.”
l “The two people who came
out were very nice and I was
satisfied with the service.”
The hours that this service operates
have now been extended, and the
service is now available to everyone in
the borough.
So call 020 7527 7272 to report
your problem and our anti-social
behaviour officers, who are on duty
between 4pm and 2am Sunday to
Thursday, and 5pm and 4am Friday and
Saturday, will come and investigate.
Cllr Barbara Sidnell, Islington Council’s
executive member for community
safety, said: “We know how stressful
and damaging anti-social behaviour can
be and are working hard with all of our
partners, including the police, to tackle
it. We have joined up many services that
deal with anti-social behaviour on an
individual basis to provide the borough
with one team whose primary focus it is
to put a stop to anti-social behaviour.”
From 1 April, resident parking permits
will be issued electronically. This
Islington Council has been
chosen as one of the partners
on the latest Chewing Gum
Action Group’s campaign to rid
our streets of the sticky issue
of gum.
The campaign will see the
council working with local
communities to encourage
people to take responsibility
for their litter, put their
used gum in a bin and
take pride in their
streets. By simply
disposing of gum
responsibly in a
the current paper permit system will
still apply.
Safer Islington
www.islington.gov.uk
While many of us agree a dog is
‘man’s best friend’, none of us are
happy about owners who don’t clean
up after their pets. To tackle this
issue, Islington Council is planning to
launch a major new campaign to deal
with the problem of dog mess.
Two new “dog squads” will be
patrolling the borough to crack down
on dog fouling in our streets, estates
and parks. Some officers will be in
uniform – and others will be in plain
clothes to catch those who think
they can get away with it.
Anyone who fails to clean up their
dog’s mess immediately will face an
£80 fine – and if they don’t pay, they
will go to court. The simple message
is pick it up, or get fined.
The plan is to focus on hotspots
in Islington from May - and that’s
where you can help.
We’re asking residents to ‘shop
a dropper’ – if you know someone
who regularly lets their dog foul near
you, tell us who, where and when it
happens. Our patrols will regularly
visit reported hot spots.
Islington’s many responsible dog
owners – who always clean up after
their dog – will not be affected.
Owners of all ages are reminded to
bag it and bin it as anyone in control
of a dog is responsible for clearing up
its mess, and could be fined if they
don’t. So remember:
l before going out with your pet,
always take some plastic bags to
clean up waste
l when your pet makes a mess,
always clean it up immediately
l put the bag of waste in any
rubbish bin.
You can “shop a dropper” –
tell us about irresponsible
dog owners – by calling our new
24/7 anti-social behaviour hotline
on 020 7527 7272. Give us
details of who is causing the
problem, where and when. The
number can also be used to report
other dog-related anti-social
behaviour, such as aggression or
continuous barking. Alternatively,
you can report your concern online
at www.islington.gov.uk/reportasb
Help us
crack down
on dog fouling
Going barking mad?
Unfortunately some owners fail
to look after their dogs properly
and let them cause a disturbance
to others by continuous barking,
and even letting them run loose,
frightening others.
To tackle these concerns, the
council’s Animal Welfare Service
introduced a Responsible Dog
Ownership Agreement (RDOA)
last year, which outlines specific
guidelines for looking after a dog
and preventing it from becoming
a nuisance. These agreements
were trialled by the council last
March and, since then, six have
been issued, with no reported
breaches so far.
An RDOA is an enforceable
contract, usually drawn up after
a complaint has been made, and
sets out the actions that can be
taken should there be any breach
of the agreement. In exchange
for the owner agreeing to certain
conditions, the animal is given a free
basic health and behavioural checkup,
free neutering vouchers and
micro-chipping. Dog training and
behavioural advice may also be given.
The council is committed to having
a fair and safe borough for everyone
and RDOAs are a way of helping to
make this possible.
If you are bothered by anti-social behaviour caused by a dog,
report it by calling our new 24/7 anti-social behaviour hotline
on 020 7527 7272. Alternatively, you can report your concern
online at www.islington.gov.uk/reportasb

Safer Islington
Watch your phone
The police and council are offering advice
following a huge increase in mobile phone
thefts in Islington recently. Lots of mobile
phone thefts happen in crowded areas,
near stations, bus stops and main roads,
so if you use your mobile phone when
you’re out, be aware…
l Thieves are often on bikes and
mopeds, so don’t use your phone if
someone could whizz by on a bike
and grab it
l Don’t check your phone as soon as
you leave a tube or train station -
leave it a while, or walk into a shop
to check it
l Don’t text while you’re walking -
you will be less aware of what is
happening around you
l If you can, stand with your back
against a wall when using your phone
so nobody can come up behind you
l Be discreet when using your phone
- don’t leave it on the table in bars
and restaurants, and don’t leave your
bags unattended
l Register your phone and other
property at www.immobilise.com – it
can help recover your property and
capture thieves. You will need your
phone’s IMEI number, which you
can find by typing *#06# into your
phone, which will display a 15 digit
number.
temporary
Borough
Commander
Simon Corkhill
speaks to
IslingtonLife about dealing with
cuts and keeping up-to-date…
“ As you all know, the police,
along with many other public
sector organisations, are facing
budget cuts in the coming years.
Here at Islington we are working
very hard to try to minimise the
impact this will have on front line
policing and officer numbers.
We currently have a number
of neighbourhood policing posts
funded by Islington Council, and
they work with the local council to
deal with issues causing concern
to residents.
We are also trying new and
innovative ideas to allow local
communities to contact us and
influence how the borough
is policed. We have held a
number of web chats both at a
neighbourhood level and with the
police commander. Look out for
a future event where the police
commander and council leader will
jointly hold an online chat where
you can have your say.
You can find out about policing
ASB update
Over the last nine months, Islington
Council has been working with the
police, schools, alcohol services and
local retailers to reduce the crime,
anti-social behaviour and harm caused
by underage drinking. This initiative,
the Community Alcohol Partnership
(CAP), was set up in the Caledonian
Road area of Islington.
Since the CAP began, the total
number of young people involved
in alcohol related crime fell by 23.5
percent, while calls to Homes for
Islington regarding alcohol and antisocial
behaviour in the area fell by 58
percent. The Trading Standards team
also provided training to local off-licences
and during a test purchasing exercise at
the end of the CAP there were no sales
made to under-18s. Find out more at
www.islington.gov.uk/cap
The Police Neighbourhood Support
Team, which was set up to tackle antisocial
behaviour and crime on estates,
has also had a positive effect on local
crime. Since it was set up, the team has
secured Drug Closure Orders on eight
homes linked to drug abuse and anti
social behaviour.
Also, this financial year 62 Acceptable
Behaviour Contracts (ABCs), which are
monitored regularly, have been issued,
and Anti Social Behaviour Orders
(ASBOs) granted against 20 people.

Council to build new affordable homes
The council is identifying
sites to build new family
homes in Islington…
As we all know, property in
Islington is amongst some of the
most expensive in London. For most
people, mortgages and private rent
are simply unaffordable, and there
is a desperate need for affordable
homes in Islington - especially
for local families. Levels of
overcrowding are higher here than
in many other London boroughs.
That is why the council has
committed to over 30 building
projects to provide 200 new and
affordable homes by 2014. As the
borough is already very built up
with few greenspaces, we have
had to be creative, building houses
on unusual and unloved spaces like
garages.
The majority of our new homes
will be suitable for families and have
many features that will help keep
residents’ bills low while helping the
environment. Such features include
good insulation, solar panels and
triple glazing.
New properties at Arundel
Grove and King Henry Street
were completed last year in what
had previously been a derelict
car park and garages not far
from Newington Green. The site
contained 25 garages that had
been disused for a number of years
and had become a dumping ground
for rubbish and attracted various
forms of anti-social behaviour. As
well as the greener standards listed
above, the new properties have
also been designed to deter crime
and anti-social behaviour.
Greener homes
Work to provide cavity wall
insulation in council homes is
nearing completion. Many homes
waste energy through poor
New homes
at Arundel
Grove
insulation, and around a third of
heat is lost through uninsulated
walls. But insulating these walls
helps save energy and cut fuel bills,
so the work done to these homes is
cost effective as it will pay for itself
over and over again.
Solar panels have also been
installed in some of the communal
areas of Islington’s estates, such as
corridors, lifts and stairwells. This
means that the cost of communal
electricity is lower for residents
- and of course it’s better for the
environment too.
Home sweet home for Sally
An Islington resident is enjoying
major improvements to her
home as part of the biggest
ever upgrade of properties in
Islington. Sally Beautista now
has a brand new kitchen and
bathroom, and has also received
a new energy efficient boiler
and replacement radiators in the
first major improvements to
her flat since she moved in back
in 1989.
The improvements form
part of the Decent Homes
Programme, which was started
by Homes for Islington (HFI)
in 2004, when almost two
thirds of council properties
in the borough did not meet
the nationally-recognised
‘Decent Homes’ standard. Since
then, over 17,000 kitchens
and 10,000 bathrooms have
been renewed, along with new
windows and boilers.
Sally said: “I am very pleased
with the courteousness and
helpfulness of contractors when
they were working in the flat.
The way the project manager
dealt with things made me feel
listened to.”
Tackling illegal
subletting
The government is planning
to be tougher on council
tenants who rent their homes
out illegally. Subletting your
property is also unfair to the
growing list of local people in
genuine need of a council home.
We are cracking down on fraud
and illegal subletting, and have
recently successfully taken
several council tenants to court.
If you know of someone
who is committing housing
fraud let us know by calling 020
7527 7432 or emailing housing.
If you think you could be an
illegal tenant you can contact
Be fire safe
The London Fire Brigade recently
attended a fire in a one bedroom
flat in Holloway. A locked security
gate fitted to the outside of the
door prevented the resident from
escaping. Luckily, fire officers were
able to rescue the resident who was
treated in hospital for serious smoke
inhalation injuries.
Following this incident Islington
Council and the London Fire Brigade
would like residents with security
grilles in their home to be aware of
the following:
l Doors and window grilles may
impede your escape in the event of
a fire so you should consider if they
are necessary.
l Window grilles should be easy to
open fully from the outside.
l Door grilles should have one lock
with the key kept nearby so that
it is easy to find in the dark or in
smoke. The key should be out of
sight and reach from the letterbox.
Your Home
9
l Smoke alarms should be fitted
in the property to alert you of a
fire and these should be checked
regularly.
l The best escape route is the normal
way in and out of your home. Make
sure all exits are kept clear.
If you are thinking about fitting a
door or window grille, always check
that your landlord agrees. If you
have any concerns or questions,
Get into books
www.islington.gov.uk
It’s great to have a book with you
when you’re out and about to read
on public transport, sheltering from
rain in a café or enjoying some
sunshine in one of Islington’s parks.
And there’s plenty going on in the
borough to help get you reading!
Unlike other London boroughs,
Islington has kept open all its libraries
despite cuts to our budget, but we’ve
had to change some of the opening
hours, so check before you visit.
The panel (right) gives the address
and phone number of your nearest
libraries. As well as books, CDs, DVDs
and various other services, you can
also access the internet in all our
libraries – and if you’re stuck, staff will
be on hand to help.
Don’t forget, it is completely free
to join, and once you’re a member
you can use any one of the borough’s
10 libraries. Sign up online or in any of
the libraries.
If you are housebound or have
mobility difficulties, you can sign up to
use our Home Library Service. As part
of this free service, our mobile library
comes to your home and you can
choose from a range of books, talking
books and music CDs. Find out more
online or call 020 7527 7980 between
Children from three local primary
Arsenal FC for Premier League
Reading Stars. The aim is to get
more children and parents involved
in reading.
From now until June, children will
visit their local library to take part in
activities including online “challenges”
set by twenty top Premier League
footballers. The players also select
books they recommend the children
Arsenal and England’s Theo Walcott
who has chosen his own book ‘TJ and
What the Dickens?
An exhibition on Charles Dickens,
England’s most popular Victorian novelist,
is now on at the Islington Local History
Centre to mark 200 years since his birth.
The writer recorded life all over the
capital but was particularly drawn
towards the people and scenes of
Clerkenwell - then a densely populated,
poor and roguish part of London.
As part of the exhibition, there will be a
range of events taking place in Islington,
including a guided walk on 14 April and
a range of special events in our libraries
over Easter. Pop into your local library or
Cllr Paul Convery, executive member
for culture, said: “Charles Dickens had
a strong connection with London but
not everyone knows he spent time in
Islington. His work provides an invaluable
social and historical documentary of this
special part of north London.
“This free exhibition opens a window
on his world at a time when he was the
most well-read author in the land.
“Dickens’ themes of poverty, inequality
and class are still relevant today. I’m
proud that despite government cuts we
A Platform
to success!
Young volunteers have started work
as customer service advisors at
Platform, Islington’s stunning arts hub
for young people.
One of the volunteers told
IslingtonLife that the work will provide
great experience. Amal Naboulsi, 18,
said: “This is a great experience and a
way to meet new people, something
completely different to studying.”
Based in the former Hornsey
Road Baths, Platform has a theatre,
Thierry Henry is supporting the Arsenal
School Attendance Project run by
Arsenal in the Community. The project
has run for four years at breakfast
clubs in secondary schools in Islington
and Camden, and those who attend
get a message from the Arsenal
legend encouraging pupils
to attend school in order to
achieve their goals in life.
The project has seen a very
positive impact on attendance
and punctuality levels in
Islington schools.
Amal is enjoying
her new role
performance space, media suites, a
recording studio, dance studio and
a café. Young people are actively
involved in running every aspect of
the activities.
As well as a rich programme of
creative workshops, performances
and events, Platform offers leadership
development and career-based
training opportunities for young
people, together with careers advice,
information and guidance.
Fulfil your potential
We’re using this year’s
budget to help protect our
excellent youth services from
government cuts. As well as
Islington’s fantastic new youth
council (see opposite), we’ve
opened fantastic new facilities
like Platform in N7 and a new
youth hub in N1. We’re also
working to ensure the best
courses are available for young
people and providing new
apprenticeships. To find out
more, visit www.islington.gov.
Later this year, we’ll be
launching a new website for
young people. This will give
information about a range of
topics, including courses and
job opportunities. So watch
this space!
As well as these top-notch
venues and activities, we’re
also investing in work to
disrupt gangs and target the
adults who recruit young
people into crime.
We’re allocating funds
towards helping young people
in Islington to find a home,
by offering housing advice
and opportunities, including
cheaper shared ownership,
extra points for tenants’
Meet the youth
councillors!
Over 3,000 of our young people
braved snowy conditions in
February to take the time to vote
in Islington’s first ever youth
council elections. The eight with
the most votes have now formed
the youth council.
The youth councillors will work
together to represent the views
of children and young people
in Islington, share their views
with the council and help make
decisions about issues that affect
young people, including how
money is spent on services for
them. They will also fundraise
for local charities and causes for
young people.
Growing up
in Islington
and watching
young people
my age lose
hope is more
than alarming.
Crime and safety has become a great
concern in today’s society. Not only I,
but several of Islington’s youths, have
come to realise that this is an issue that
needs to be seriously addressed. With
the help of the youth around Islington,
great long-lasting positive change can
be made.
I’m a vibrant,
passionate and
hardworking
individual. If
I say I’ll do
get done. I run my own website www.
youth talents. Be who you want to be.
I’m Chloe Bingham. Who are you?
Elliot Colley
Today we
represent
what truly
matters to
you and me:
our future,
our education,
safety and
environment. These crucial factors
are the lifeblood of our society and
wellbeing. Valour is a very unique
opportunity for all young people. Think
of valour as the face of all your faces.
We represent not only you, but the
beginning of a newer and better future
in Islington, our home.
Harry Tomes
When I first
started this
campaign, I
was advised
to think
outside the
box. I was
told to be
different and original. The harsh
reality? Too many people try to be
original, and end up either making
small, indiscreet changes, or they all
end up like each other. I campaign for
equality and fairness for a reason. It’s
this that allows us to have a say, and
to prove who we really are. I’ll do my
utmost to get us back on top where
we belong.
I will make
sure that
we, the young people of Islington,
the next generation, have access to
facilities that will help us to grow as
a community. This includes art, sport,
and much more. Why? Because we are
the future.
Jasmine
I want to make
young people
aware of
opportunities
in Islington
and ensure
that the youth
clubs in Islington give young people
access to employment. I will make a
difference by setting up networks and
ensuring the Islington youth are inspired
and served.
Miriam
Owusu
The media
today is
all about
unemployment
among young
people, as
this has
increased rapidly due to cuts on jobs
being inflicted on us. As a young
person myself, I understand how
tough it is. So I’ve decided to focus on
providing a service for young people
to equip themselves with key skills for
employment. I know we’ll make a great
team and will make a difference.
There are still plenty of
chances for young people to
get involved with the work of
the youth council and make a
real difference to other young
people in the borough. Go to
I would say my
motto in life
is: Don’t wait
for something
to happen
– make it
happen. We
are the next generation of success and
need to be prepared for the future. I
want to make sure young people have
support and advice on the next step to
their future so we can all turn round and
say, ‘I was the difference’.

University Challenge-style quiz.
The Fast Show funnyman was quizmaster for the
Islington round of Young Consumer of the Year,
School, with a team from Mount Carmel coming second.
Both will represent Islington in the London regional final
Getting around
during the Games
The Games is the largest sporting event in the world
and a lot of people will be moving around London.
Public transport will be busy and there will be some
disruption on the roads, but the Olympics organisers
are doing their best to prepare – and there are
ways you can keep up-to-date as well…
Whether you're travelling to and
from Olympic events, doing your
usual commute to work or going
out in your leisure time, you're
probably going to need to think
about how and when you travel a bit
more than usual.
Locally, we’ll be expecting Highbury
and Islington (Overground to
Stratford) and Angel (Northern
Line) stations to be busier than
normal. Kings Cross St Pancras will
also be very busy as many mainline
and underground lines meet, plus
spectators will be catching the high
speed Javelin train to Stratford.
Transport for London has been
looking at the impact of the
2012 Games across London
day by day, and you can view
maps and information at www.
getaheadofthegames.com or follow
@GAOTG on Twitter.
On the road
Various roads in central
London will be closed in
places over several hours
during the Games for
road events like cycling,
marathons and the
triathlon. As with public
transport, plan ahead and
be sure to check these
dates before you travel
– and always allow extra
time for your journey.
Torch Relay
The torch relay will be in
London, passing through
every London borough on its journey
to the Olympic Stadium, between
21 to 27 July, and will be coming
through Islington on 26 July. This is
going to be a great opportunity for
local people to come out and watch
a truly historic event, but it will
likely cause some travel disruption
in the area. We are expecting some
temporary road closures which
will probably cause delays on and
around the torch route, so find out
where the torch is going at www.
london2012.com/olympic-torchrelay.
You can also keep up-to-date
online by following the council’s
twitter accounts @IslingtonBC and
@IslingtonLife.
Be prepared
Throughout the Games you might
need to consider travelling at
different times or using different
forms of transport, or even just
walking or cycling where you can.
Don’t leave home without an A-Z
or a smartphone in your pocket just
in case!
businesses have an exciting
opportunity to support our home
businesses can sponsor a local
elite athlete for one year. Local
gymnasts, canoeists, fencers and
rugby players all need your help to
compete at an international level.
Hot meals, energy saving advice and
Islington’s older residents is on the
cards after the council bid for extra
government funding.
The council asked for extra
money to help older people on their
doorsteps. Now £99,000 from
the ‘Warm Homes, Healthy People’
fund will be spent on a variety
of neighbourhood help packages
including an ‘Active Neighbours’
campaign encouraging residents to
look out for older and vulnerable
members of their communities. There
will also be more accessible local
Older People’s Champions
executive member for adult
social care and health
information and advice on services
to stay healthy and save energy,
provided by the council and its
partners.
Older People’s Champion Frances
Davidson is thrilled with the news. She
said: “I am absolutely delighted to hear
that Islington has won £99,000 for
older residents and I want to thank
everyone who has worked to get it!
This is, however, the beginning of more
work to come because we still need
support for older people to obtain a
decent pension in line with our costs to
live in a very expensive country where
half our weekly pension goes on bills.”
Funding to help
Voluntary Action Islington (VAI)
is celebrating after winning
lottery funding to help 400
unemployed people in Islington
improve their chances of
Local charities and communities
also benefit through the work
of the volunteers.
Mike Sherriff, Chief
Executive of VAI, said:
“Thanks to this project we
will be able to support local
unemployed people gain new
skills and experience and
make a positive contribution
to our community.”
Margaret Brade, pictured
Isabella Beeton (1836-1865), cook
and author
Beeton was born in the City of London
and attended school in Colebrook Row.
In 1861 she published Mrs Beeton’s
Book of Household Management, which
was a guide to running a Victorian
household. It included advice on fashion,
childcare, poisons and the management
of servants. Of the 1,000 pages, over
900 contained recipes.
The Angel Inn, 1 Islington High Street
(now the Co-op bank)
This public house was first recorded
as an inn in 1614 and probably dates
back as early as the 15th century.
Islington was an important staging
post for coaches travelling north
from London and the inn features
in the painting The Stage Coach
by artist William Hogarth and is
mentioned as a coaching stop in
Charles Dickens’ Sketches by Boz and
Oliver Twist.
Catherine Griffiths (1885-1988),
suffragette and campaigner
McQueen. His achievements in fashion
earned him four British Designer of the Year
awards. He died in February 2010.
Jack Kennedy (1935-2003),
campaigner
Kennedy lived in Drayton Park and
devoted his life to campaigns of justice,
fairness and equality. He was a key figure
in the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four
campaigns that resulted in the release
of 10 innocent people. He also led a
campaign in the 1990s that exposed
the number of deaths on British building
sites due to poor safety conditions - the
campaign succeeded in introducing new
site safety legislation.
Michael Faraday (1791-1867),
chemist and physicist
the nature of electricity and magnetism
this site.
site. He was highly esteemed both in
scientific and commercial circles. In 1797
he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of
the Loyal Islington Volunteers.
The White Conduit Cricket Club
White Conduit Fields Cricket Club was
of BBC documentary ‘Hidden Side
of Sport’, which explored the impact
of depression and mental health
problems on professional sportsmen.
During the programme, Freddie
spoke to a number of sporting stars
who have suffered from mental health
difficulties before visiting Arsenal in the
Community’s ‘How Are You Feeling
Today?’ programme, funded by the
Premier League and Sport Relief and
delivered by the Imagine Your Goals
initiative. As part of England’s biggest
anti-stigma programme, Time to
Change, the scheme offers football
sessions twice a week for service users
at Islington Mind and the Camden and
Islington Foundation Trust and uses
the sport to help improve participants’
physical and mental well-being.
Commenting on the scheme, Freddie
said: “It was great to visit the Arsenal
in the Community project as part
of the documentary. The work that
they do is invaluable and is making
a real difference, helping individuals
to overcome depression and mental
health problems. It made me realise
the positive influence that sport can
