Ismail has played a significant role in his capacity as an advocate and<br />

solicitor in the development of <strong>Islamic</strong> banking and finance in Malaysia.<br />

In 1983, he drafted the first <strong>Islamic</strong> banking documents used by Bank<br />

Islam Malaysia, the only <strong>Islamic</strong> bank then. He has appeared as leading<br />

counsel in cases involving <strong>Islamic</strong> banking in the Superior Courts in<br />

Malaysia.<br />

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and of the<br />

Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators and a Barrister-at-law of Lincoln’s<br />

Inn. He is also a Notary Public. Ismail is a member of the <strong>Islamic</strong> Capital<br />

Market Working Group of the Securities Commission of Malaysia. He<br />

is also a director of Kuwait <strong>Finance</strong> House Malaysia. Prior to this, he<br />

was a director of Bank Muamalat Malaysia, as a nominee of Khazanah<br />

Nasional.<br />

Not only is he an External Fellow of the <strong>Islamic</strong> Banking and <strong>Finance</strong><br />

Institute Malaysia (IBFIM) but also an External Examiner in law at<br />

University Teknologi MARA. He is a Visiting Industry Expert at the<br />

International Centre for Education in <strong>Islamic</strong> <strong>Finance</strong> (INCEIF) and the<br />

Adjunct Faculty of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.<br />

Ismail was a member of the Working Committee on <strong>Islamic</strong> Law Review<br />

of Bank Negara Malaysia (the Central Bank) and Chairman of the Sub-<br />

Committee to review the law of contract (the Contracts Act 1950 of<br />

Malaysia) on its compatibility with Shariah. He was also a member of<br />

the Steering Committee on the International <strong>Islamic</strong> Money Market in<br />

Malaysia, which is now headquartered in Bahrain.<br />
