SHORT HISTORY
Coding of these stations i, somewhat unusual. Local codes had been assigned that often conflicted with other international
codes; therefore, when data were contributed to NElS, alternate three-letter codes were assigned. To identify the networks 'nd
to obtaln unlque statlon names that would not conflict with existing codes,
•
system of four-letter codes was designed.
are the codes ending with H, listed in the column headed "New."
These
The "Alternate" codes .,. those which were assigned by NElS and
,,. still valid. The "Local" codes are those which had been used by Henlo Park in cataloging data and which may still be useful
in locating old records.
The first letter of the four-letter codes signifies the network that contains the station.
Therefore, A--M belongs to the network Auburn
Recording of seismiCity near Auburn began in february 1972, with the installation of the station ADC; it i, owned by the
Bureau of Reclamation and operated by the USGS, Albuquerque. A horizontal Wood-Anderson began operating there in April 1973.
On January 28, 1976. the operation of the station was turned over to USGS, Henlo Park, which expanded the network to include
:26 stations.
HORM was not operated from May 9, 1968, to December 3, 1969.
JPPI1 was not operated from April 5. 1971, to August 20, 1975.
JBCM, (LHD) , (MDO) , NFII1, CSHM, (FOR) • and HeR" operate intermittently.
