The LRSM program began in 1960 ., part of the VELA-Uniform project. It continued until 1971, when it w"' replaced by the
Special Data Collection System program wbich remains active. Work under these programs h., been directed towards advancing the
seismic-detection, identi fication, 'nd location techniques necessary to detect ,nd identify underground nuclear explosions.
